    • It is proprietary Mack axle based on CRD95/96 carrier series. It is identical to S652 axle but with upgraded GAWR capacity to 85,000 lbs (tandem; 42,500 lbs/axle). The new Link/Raydan 85,000 lbs suspension is matched with this axle.
    • What hasn't changed a bit from the early days, is the number of axles to haul the weight and therefore the number of brakes to slow the load. 140K, 170K at 70MPH with the same brakes that were used when the speed was 1/2 that is not an improvement.  More power will help get the load up the grade, but takes a good hand to get it back down the other side. I once pulled Butte, MT westbound and was one gear up from bottom, I could have used more power! only had a 315 HP at 1800 RPM gov limit, if that.  Now we have big power, but still the same 7-8 axles and brakes under the same load.  More power and the temptation to grab more gears and speed when pulling a grade instead of selecting a gear and riding it to the top, Much easier to do damage shifting under that kind of load on a grade, then taking more time and pulling to the top a bit slower.
    • Thanks for the info. I just don't like the new "shared with Volvo stuff" As you say, a lot of it has to do with fuel mileage and emissions regulations, but they just don't even look nice. No shape or styling, all flat body panels. And they don't look or feel like trucks any more. Too automotive, way too much electronics and gadgets. But I guess that's what the new generation wants. Just glad I don't have to buy or drive them any more for a living. And they talk about distracted driving, yet all these new auto's and trucks have to have 12 inch tv screens in the middle of the dash that you can scroll through pages of info.....instead of nice simple gauges. The Rawhide was the last nice Mack cab and interior for me.
    • Yep, I pulled 140,000 pounds daily with this old 88 R Model, 350 four valve, 15 speed. But I was down to 3rd gear on all our 7, 10 to 12% hills in the winter pushing wind and slush. Nowadays everyone has to go 70 MPH, which I believe is part of the problem with all the accidents now. Put a seat cover in a rig with 500 plus h.p. pulling a freight van, with an automatic and a super strong engine brake and they really don't have to know how to drive. And now we see the results.
    • I remember those conversations and thinking I really had no idea when or if I'd ever make it. Honestly, it was an epic trip for me and the truck. At times I never thought it would be there or I'd have something that would make it that far and be worthy of being seen there. Pulling into the park felt like I was high fiving myself. Pulling back into my driveway at the end of the trip was the validation of having completed a thorough restoration of a junkyard find, dead truck. Sharing the restoration here on this blog was so beneficial and to keeping everything on track. Having progress to report was really motivating, even though at times there were breaks and gaps due to other things going on. A cool side benefit was meeting and conversing with people like yourself and everyone else who added comments or pictures. It's been almost ten years since my first post and it has been one remarkable journey, all just to restore an old truck, and the journey continues on with new adventures. I can't thank everyone enough for their contributions and help along the way!!
    • I couldn't swing it this year. Not to mention the poor weather forecast didn't make me feel real bad about not going.
    • I believe it was. It was the choice of the two I was traveling with, so I was just following along. No trucks were allowed, we parked along the street. There was another truck stop we went to just up the street where they fueled up before we continued. They made this run many times and knew where to stop.
    • Matt, Where was this picture taken? At the Clinton Station diner on NJ 78, home to the worlds largest hamburger?   https://www.jerseysbest.com/just-in-jersey/wheres-the-beef-we-found-it-at-clinton-station-diner-in-a-monstrous-15-pound-burger/             .....Hippy

Hey Mike! Sorry to bug ya on here, I just bought a pallet of wine in Napa and think you may have done the same. I bought the blue label and it said you won the yellow label. I was wondering if you would be up for trading a few cases so we arent stuck with so many of just 1 type of wine?

Quick question on the advice you gave me about my ai400 cam/lifter replacement kit.
would you have a rough estimate on the time it would take to do the actual replacement with kit? I have everything removed I’m just ready to open up the front of the engine and get to the cam. Thanks
