Beautiful Catastrophe V

I was going through a shoe box of old photos and found two great candidates for the beautiful catastrophe series on 35MM film.

This one is from the Mack Dealership. One of the mechanics brought in his daughters car for some after hours repairs. We came in that morning and the customers loaded chip trailer was fine, no one recalled it having a list to the right?  Doors were open on the shop, weather nice, not a single person heard it fall on the car.   

When I took the pic the ground had already lost moisture and frost had dropped out. The customer cut the trailer open, scooped the chips out and scrapped it. Co-workers plans to fix the Chevette were put on hold.....indefinitely.

Was the right sand pad already missing when the customer dropped the trailer or is int still in the hole?  Looks like it sank into the ground a bit. The left pad is bent like the trailer had settled right long enough to bend it it before going over.

If you zoom in you can see the flange of the torn off pad down in the earth. Left almost peeled.

SWIFT actually has an instruction label on the landing gear .  .   .   . course it is only visible when the trailer is on it's side.

Spring frost is unpredictable. Plus, guys get sloppy after 5 months of frozen-rock earth. They spend the winter months driving on lakes and crawling heavy equipment over swamp bogs. 

Highway limits come in. Park it. Forget it. Meanwhile lava’s chipping away at the bottom of the frost column and Sun is chipping at the top. Little rainfall to make a thermal bridge and ~plop~, the extra week of frost you counted on is gone.

I've used my R612 several times to pull a loaded trailer which has sunk back up. 1/2" plate with a chain and loop welded to it for the winch hook to grab slid into the small part of the king pin of the trailer and the oomph of the winch usually pulls them right up. Had the front wheels on the tractor hanging a few times but the trailers usually pop free with jogging of the winch, and weight of the truck, (leverage). Had one trailer stuck and along with the truck hanging with the wheels in the air, two porta powers pushing up on the trailer when it popped free. That one was a chip trailer at a then local sawmill which is now gone. Still have my "cribbing" in the shop used for this purpose made from 6X6 oak slabs too.

Haughty Newscasters trying to decide what’s worthy of an attraction? We dream about that happening here. 

Ice fisherman’s dream. Sit and jig while the disc does all the work. Bugger if you go under since it appears to take a couple minutes before your hole comes back around to you. Relax and hold your breath.

The 2020 version in Westbrook had a welcome back party today. . . I went. The disc is close to 5 inches thick now.
