Can drivers read ?

I have to ask,  Are truck drivers blind or do they just not understand detour signs ?  The hyway  project I am working on has a bridge closed.  And the local detour has a 10 ton bridge.  There is a truck detour that goes on another hyway route , and by-passes the torn up road construction,  That detour adds maybe 15 minutes and 10 miles,  but brings you to the exact same place as the road under construction.   There have been countless  company freight trucks and owner operators  and 3 and 4 axle lowboys and cattle trucks  going right past the detour signs  and over the little 10 ton bridge,  Why take the chance?   Are these drivers  afraid to deviate from their GPS route?

A lot of people do seem to blindly follow the GPS. Back home, they got so tired of truckers getting stuck down at Little Beaver State Park (WV) they put up signs telling them not to follow the GPS. We had another one, closer to the farm, trying to get from Hinton to Princeton and decided to take what everyone calls The Hoover Highway (gravel one-lane built during the depression). The Hoover Highway is fun enough in a straight truck, this guy managed to get halfway down the mountain with a load of shingles before he got too far over on the shoulder and the shingles went over. I hear everyone in Mountain Creek has a new roof now :p

Every time the railroad closes the road by the house for 2-3 days to replace the crossing, we get the same thing.  Detour signs clearly mark the route around.  Electronic signs clearly stating what, where, and why the detour is posted.  Every time without fail, you get folks (cars and trucks alike) running right up to the barricades and then scratching their heads when they can't proceed.

Yes, there is a shortcut...but I always send them back around the long way to follow the detour.  My neighbors thought I was an asshole for not sharing the shortcut, but they need to learn that when the signs say "ROAD CLOSED" and a detour is marked, they should follow the detour.  Best part was the truckers...I wouldn't let them make the turn onto my road to turn around in the church parking lot.  They spent a lot of money having a 1" asphalt overlay put on their chip & seal parking lot...won't hold up to trucks spinning trailers around.  Made them back their way out of town to find a suitable place to turn around.  Next time, read the friggin' signs!

It was rather  one time, though.  I got home, and had to move one of the barricades to get into my driveway.  Railroad guy saw me and started to say "road is closed" and I pointed at my house and said "not where I'm going it ain't!"  Apparently he'd been dealing with dumbassery all day from illiterate people in their cars & trucks.

When approaching a 4-way stop, the vehicle with the biggest tires has the right of way!

What drives me bat shit crazy is the village idiots who can see a coned off lane closure from a mile away but refuse to change lanes until the very last second just before they hit the cones. I'm usually the guy getting cut off.

Quoted For Truth :) Can't stand that either.

Maybe if the signs were posted on their smartphones they'd see them.

New product idea: proximity modules for road signs that text the driver the info on the sign :p I bet they have emoji for most types of roadwork even.

It's not question of whether they can  read or not its that they don't even see the damn signs

They don’t care if they see them either. I get passed on double lines just about daily and it pisses me off to no end. Some dumbass is putting my well being and other drivers well being at risk because some a-hole that’s in a hurry and can’t wake up five minutes earlier can’t wait a quarter or half a mile to pass safely in a passing zone. About 1/5 of the impatient a-holes are truckers who will do anything to pass the instant they come up behind you so they can do 1.5mph faster than me because that’s where they are governed.

The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by the people who vote for a living.

The government can only "give" someone what they first take from another.

If you want to see crazy drivers, gone to LA and drive around, especially in the San Fernando valley. I think they are in a hurt to get to there porn shoots.

I had a bottom dump pass me on the shoulder the other day, the funny thing is I was pushing the speed limit.

An another thing about thr road is there are too many signs to read and drive safety with the amount of traffic we have in a construction site.I think also there is a lot of lower IQ people in trucks now.I know I work with some. But at the end of the day I say thank you Lord keeping me alive.I have been hauling on the Turnpike construction for over a year and I cant get over what you see for drivers. Our turnpike is narrowed down to two loanes now and I see some truckers that what I think is almost blind because they take up more than their half.I lost a motor mirror due to that and it cost me over 400 dollars for a new one.
