I was at a job site in Romulus, Michigan. I was  delivering a load of joists there from Hancock Joist in Salem, VA. and listening to the Howard Stern Show on the radio.

That day started, for me, at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft Wayne with the recovery of a vac truck that had loaded and then was top-heavy for the grade that it was parked on. I learned of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd crashes on my way to the call & the 4th while there. After the recovery my team & the vac truck driver left and I went into the building that the vac truck is facing and stood and watched a large TV along with students & faculty. The room was filled with people & I could here gasps, crying and quiet praying all around me. I stayed busy that day and later, along I-69 while doing a tractor swap myself and the truck driver paused for a rest in the grass and looked up at the sky. No planes in the sky, no jet trails, nothing but a very blue sky and a few white clouds.

I was in Bear Creek AL delivering a load of scarp copper. The fourth plane was still in the air and everybody was worried about it heading for the nuclear power generating plants on the Tennessee river near Florence AL.

I was on the way to pick up a friend to go check out an antique car. I was also listening to Howard just as the second plane hit the tower.

I had just started my 24 hour shift at the Aberdeen Proving Ground (Md) Fire Department. We got the trucks, our SCBA and the equipment checked out and were in the kitchen getting breakfast when one of the Paramedics came running into the kitchen yelling "Turn on the news!" I grabbed the remote and turned on one of the Baltimore stations and we all just stood there in complete shock. Watched the second plane hit live as it happened. About 10 minutes after that we were notified that the base was locked down. Fire Chief told us to check, double check and triple check everything- make sure all air bottles were topped off, all fuel tanks were full to the necks, etc.

I lost 6 good friends that day. All guys on the job FDNY.
I have lost several good FDNY friends since as well, all due to various cancers contracted from working at "The Pile."

Spoke to my Dad that morning (who worked at Jevic headquarters in Delanco, NJ) and they sent out a Qualcomm message to any local trucks in NYC, Long Island and Yonkers to head to one of the rest areas on the NJ Tpk and await instructions. They were then told to return to Delanco. Any regional or OTR trucks heading that way were told to head to Delanco instead.

I just left. The yard was still on the night shift. It was all over the radio. Horrible

It was strange. I listened to Howard Stern and he was in New York, and he stayed on the air that day for hours after his show usually ends.

I left Romulus and went to Detroit and picked up a load of lumber.

But even after listening to him and the news all day it didn't really hit home until I stopped at the Walmart in Bedford, VA. the next day to get a newspaper. I pulled in first thing that morning and bought a USA Today and there was a big color picture on the front page, first time I'd seen it with my own eyes.

watching TV at the house checking on traffic gearing up  heading to Hartford CT yard to take truck to NY for deliveries. boss called said stay home. never understood how idiot bush just happened to be in Florida at a children's school with cameras on him to (prove his location.) guess "they" didn't expect the plane to be taken back by HEROS  only to crash in PA and not intended white hose. sadly bush Sr didn't remember where he was on nov 22 1963 either. forgot the name Dallas.

On duty at CPFD Station 2, located just west of the runways at Atlanta-Hartsfield.  In short time, all aircraft would be on the ground and Station 2 has never been so quiet.  All scheduled activities were cancelled for the next few days and we only left the stations to run emergency calls.  The station televisions, normally turned off during "business" hours, were watched closely for updates.
