Any insider thought on what they are building?
-
When I worked in auto racing. when ever a new car design was produced, failure of parts was a given. It was quite normal for us to find cracks or failures at the first race or after the first few tests early in the season. These parts when built were designed in CAD and the only testing was done with computer generated stress tests. When the parts were put under real work vibrations / stress things happen differently. It was not uncommon to pull those parts off the car, crack check them and re engineer them so they could mileage out before they were considered junk. I remember at Long Beach Grand Prix we had the whole Formula Atlantic's series on brand new shock absorbers. 3 cars had signs of leaks at the end of the weekend. We found that the aluminum "Bridge" that held the air canister to the main body of the shock cracked on all 3 cars and leaked oil. Within a few days we had a new design made and the series asked all teams to send back the shocks to us to have the parts replaced. Wen they started coming in we found a few more that were cracked. The next race was 3 weeks away, my self and 2 others had the job to replace about 150 of these parts. This was not just a simple bolt on and go. We had to tear the damper apart and then install the new part then bleed it with fluid then test on a machine to show they were matching and as good as new. That being said Mack has had years to solve this somewhat simple issue of cup failures. It may be a huge task to re design the head so this stops but what they are doing by band aiding the issue has caused them more harm than good. Anyone that knows mack knows about this issue. I know bolt torque is a important assembly process but if the bolt is to small or the pressure that is pushing on the injector is to great you will just end up with torque specs that don't maintain regardless to what you set them to. I suspect them asking to have this "magic paste" used was another band aid to allow the injector to move around a little with the vibrations that again proved to do nothing but made it last another 10-20 thousand miles. It sounds to me like the head or the injector has a serious flaw that nothing seams to help it. the time is now to stop dancing around this issue and address the problem correctly. they really need to improve on their well known reliability issues. its killing Mack at the moment.

Allison Unveils E-Axle Propulsion for Heavy-Duty Trucks

there goes more of Macks Refuse market if they dont step it up. as much as I hate electric trucks and think the tech is not there yet. big citys will gladly look into this for garbage fleets. -
Mack Trucks' market share continues decline
Lmackattack replied to kscarbel2's topic in Trucking News
Anyone living in a big city where you see fleets and lots of trucks would have seen this coming by simply watching who was buying what. Volvo would have seen it at the same time if they had retained good mack people and listened to them. But Volvo knows better and they were busy putting all their focus on a 30 year old truck, adding a slightly different styled hood complete with a proven unreliable engine under it then having the balls to call it a new Mack truck... Yeah thats the answer! The people at the top just dont seam to care or are just that dumb to think they can fool owners. Thru the last 10 years they have taken all the Mack Dealers and changed them over to Volvo dealers and do not try and sell or build reliability into their trucks. They dont even push sales or listen to fleet owners who are having the same issues over and over again. It seams obvious to anyone who goes to a dealership that Volvo is naive to what they have done to Mack. Volvo just is not maintaing or keeping Mack in step with others. I am still amazed they pump money into rebuilding the mack plants and then literally just open the door for paccar to walk in a take market share away. P.S I chuckle when people say Mack is stronger than ever with this Anthem truck. When build lead times are a year out. Who the hell would want a mack right now when you cant even get one because of their incompetence. Trent -
I went to see that movie when I was 11 or 12 with a friend and his family. It did make us jump. even back then that scene with the truck hitting the kid gave me chills..

help with low oil pressure only at idle??
Lmackattack replied to dickey's topic in Engine and Transmission
sounds like a weak pump or you have an internal leak such as a piston cooling nozzle has come louse? -
I have never driven the older 2 stick 5 speed with the over drive but all of the 2 stick 6 Direct 6 speeds had some sort of whine to them. some it was just felt in the stick others were more of a howl... the good thing is all of them were damm near bullet proof. I can only think of a few that needed bearings or something normal for wear items.

Is Volvo Good Or Bad For Mack Trucks?
Lmackattack replied to Barry's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
was talking on Facebook today about Chicagoland Concrete trucks. Oremus Materiel, a former Chicago company just started up again in Chicago with brand new KWs, Cemex has a new plant here with all new Petes and rumor is they are looking to expand in this area after some turf wars in Florida... Just more proof how Mack/volvo is dropping out of the game. I can only think of just a few chicagoland concrete company's running later model granite's and I think they both have bought new KWs in their last new truck purchase. I wonder what the sales numbers at mack year to year for the past 5 years for Concrete trucks and Garbage truck chassis? From what I see on the street. Their numbers are declining and fast fast. I have seen a few Anthems. but none of the big fleets have even looked at them. Volvo really knows how to take a proven product and change it so no one wants it. they are also good at pricing it out of line so competitors just have to answer their phone to sell a truck. -

Brad..is the pete out on the road yet? -
air and fuel.... mechanical injection and timing....thats all a diesel should need to run right !!!!!

that sounds good to me. Most of the E6's I drove hot Idled around 25-30psi and as soon as you touched the throttle it would jump to around 50psi. At high idle it would push around 65psi... sounds to me like its still at the high end of specs and thats a good thing! as far as temps. my truck was always happy if it maintained 180* and did not go much past 205* on a good pull

Granites with spokes
Lmackattack replied to autocardc's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
When I had a dump trailer with spokes the way I removed the hub to do seals and brakes was like this. back the trailer wheel over a steel plate on the ground jack the axle up in the center just to get it 1/16 of an inch up off the plate. spray some pb blaster on the plate under the tire and let is down just so the tires barely touched. remove the hub nut and bearings, slide the whole assembly off the axle using the oiled down plate to help it slide. it sounds like a pita but it saved alot of time and was very easy to do. they made a jack stand tool for this that cradled the tires and you did not need to use a plate and oil but I did not have one. -
the front mount intercooler will keep intake air cooler on a 285 and help with keeping EGTs down. you basicly could set the 285pump to 300 specs. I have never looked at the difference in 285 and 300 fuel settings they are likely very close?

Thanks Guys... they PM'ed me a few months ago but I had not logged in for quite some time. it was nice of them to consider my junk for one of the Truck of the month... I need to get her out more. I do miss driving the old dog.

Different R hoods
Lmackattack replied to JoeH's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
If I recall right when the mack 300 with front mount intercooling was introduced they added a extra inch or 2 to the hood. this was around 81' early R models had a body line at the back of the fender. this went away some time in the mid 70s? -

as hobby truck it will be fine. Check the rods and mains as most of these older V8s I have been around had them done around that milage. -
I drove a Pete 330 6 wheeler with a Cat 3126 (later cat C7)rated at 300 HP. It did a ok job for a 6 wheeler being used to haul light landscaping stuff but was not a strong runner at all when we loaded it down with clay to its max legal weight limit. (I think we were limited to 54,000lbs) I dont think you would be happy with a C10 (630 cubic inch) at all loaded down to 70k . that 330 I drove had a manual trans and when ever we were in soft ground it was not happy. you also had to keep it wound up just to keep you speed up. It was like driving a old 2 stroke. Sounds like you are looking at a Class 8 truck that was speced for light weight use. I would want a c13 at minimum for a triaxle

Stoped there a few times over the years. His son has the shop next door. I think they just collect and rarely sell trucks. They have some neat old Iron thats for sure
