head light up grade or not
Lmackattack replied to joes mack's topic in Electrical, Electronics and Lighting
I cant really comment on the issues with LEDS / slush and Ice. I will say that even with the old bulb style headlights I still found I had to pull over and clean them of the grime and build up. I think you would find the same issues with the LED even if it has a warmer but cant speak from experience -
head light up grade or not
Lmackattack replied to joes mack's topic in Electrical, Electronics and Lighting
They make LED round head lights that look stock and only have a slight hint of color to them. when they are off they look 95% stock. when they are on you will have wished you had swapped over to them sooner. I recently did this conversion on a peterbilt with single square bulbs. the LED replacements for the pete were just amazing how much better I can see now. And Yes you will likely need to aim them down once installed Search for known brands such as Grote,Trux, United pacific etc....some of them are the same light but cost less. -
The new MP8HE engine...
Lmackattack replied to bbigrig's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
reminds me of the Maxxforce engine when they Unveiled it at Con Expo las Vegas. I laughed thinking that I could not even see the block with all the crap they bolted to it -
Here is a good one from 15 years ago. Some eastern European trucker ( in a volvo) that cant speak English comes into our shipping and receiving at the race team. He is looking for 300 Tower Pky. Our address is 500 Tower Pky and we are at the end of the street so someone tells him it must be the next driveway down. Again real broken English with him and no mention of what company he is looking for. About 20 mins later he comes driving back into our parking lot but with 2 police cars escorting him. The cop ask me if they can hold him and his truck in our lot while they figure some things out. "Sure no problem". One cop stays with the trucker while the other leaves. I tell the cop that stayed with the driver that this guy was just here looking for 300 Tower parkway but he did not speak English very well. The cop says " He ran into some trouble at Hewitt, thats all I will say right now" So now im a little nosy . I grab a fellow co worker and we walk over to the Hewitt HQ employee parking lot just behind us where we see cop cars all over the lot. We spot a car at the far end of the lot flipped over on its side so we walk over where we see not only is it on its side but pushed into a 3 other cars. Now we see employees are walking out of their office to see if their car was one that was hit. we look down a ways more and see people standing around another car on its side. We walk over there and we can see that not only was another car flipped but the trailer drove over the hood of a honda and the ICC bar ripped it up pretty good as well. Im looking at the path of his destruction when I notice some skid marks on the pavement. I yell to my friend to come check this out. The skid marks were from the tractor drive wheels. I say to my friend "he put the F*&^ing power divider/axle lock in" here is about 20' of tandem axle duel wheel skid marks in a zig zag shape as he pulled and pushed his way to get the trailer over the cars..... now a hewitt employee come walking up to claim his wrecked honda. his car has tire marks across the front and he is just smiling looking around asking the cops where are the cameras at... he thinks he is being played for a comedy act...the cop keeps telling him "sorry man but you are not going to be on T.V." So after a walk around the lot all in all there were about 8 or 9 damaged cars. we get back to our shop and I see that the cops have the guy in the back of the squad car and my co worker is unloading a few skids off this guys trailer. He hands me the paperwork and indeed the address on the paperwork said 300 Tower Pky with our company name on it. a very simple typo mistake. It was a shipment of oil and brake discs for us but this guy could not speak in good English to communicate with us. A very costly mistake on his part.

How much fuel does a Caterpillar ARD head eat?
Lmackattack replied to Mack Technician's topic in Engine and Transmission
I recall seeing a study about 10-15 years ago that claimed that the Jeep grand Cherokee was one of the most environment friendly. it took into account the parts used, where they were shipped or built at. where employees who built said parts lived and traveled to work. all the little things that most dont account for. The worst "environment friendly" cars was a Honda or Toyota hybrid with all the batteries and special parts etc.... It was the most fuel efficient MPG wise but was dead last when you look at everthing -

some of the turbos said muffling device casted into the housing. You could run a straight stack legally with them. -
How much fuel does a Caterpillar ARD head eat?
Lmackattack replied to Mack Technician's topic in Engine and Transmission
that is just amazingly dumb. to think how much fuel is wasted over a lifetime and that is just from one little 330hp cat. -
What ever happend to Dan? He kinda fell off the planet. I know he has or had his dump truck bizz but have not heard from him in years

The intercooler has a coolant leak? are you speaking of the side mount air to water charge cooler? I think they called it a cool power engine?
-
I used PB blaster or WD40 on the treadle valve but we get a lot of salt on them every year so its a constant battle with them
-
It still can be a mix of things. you pushed in the yellow valve (parking system), used the foot valve (service system) and then set the yellow again (parking system). the service and parking sides of the air system are all connected yet operate separate. the green needle is the service side so I would assume that the foot valve stuck a little and bleed off air thru a leaky treadle valve or quick release valve? what I would do is repete the same series of events and see if it leaks down again. or spray the treadle valve with lube and see if the issue does not come back. also make sure the trolly handle is not pulled a little
-
If I remember right the green needle is showing air pressure on the service side of the air brake system. if the orange needle stays up that tells me the check valve is working keeping the parking side of the air system charged. but Im not real savy on the air braking systems.

you will drive yourself nuts chasing a slow leak like that LOL....but I wish you luck

looks like the thermostat is working just fine?

That's odd. Volvo/Mack says you don't need a big liter engine with fleet trucks.

fuel tank question
Lmackattack replied to vansite89's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
yes if you have free rail space to locate the new tankmounts. the front frame rails start to spread near the cab cowl so make sure you take that into consideration . also some air tank brackets may be in the way? -
Transmissio swap from T2090 to T2070
Lmackattack replied to Vladislav's topic in Engine and Transmission
I just checked the road speed calculator and with 5.02 rears with 44" tall rubber and a final transmission over drive of .71 that will put you at 77MPH at 2100 RPM or 66MPH at 1800RPM. if you have a low RPM motor I would have the pump re calibrated up to 2100RPM spec. I disliked the low RPM mack motors as they never really came alive like the 2100RPM engines do. I would go as far as saying I like the 9 speed better for pure over the road use other than the 12 speed. but of you do any off road dirt work the 12 speed is much better as you have all the low gears and 5 reverse gears. I always drove a 12 speed like a 5 speed when empty. some times I would start out in low 2 and shift up to 5th and then split 5th into over drive. Trent -
Transmissio swap from T2090 to T2070
Lmackattack replied to Vladislav's topic in Engine and Transmission
Yep my friend some times trial and error is the best way to learn. but good on you for giving it a go. I was never a fan of the T2050-2060-2070-2080 series of transmissions. they were very specific to what mack rears had to be used to get the gearing right and they really had useless low gears on the low side that you sometimes had to use to get a load moving before going back into hi. the old 2 stick 6 speed or 12 speed was a better transmission by far. a freind of mine had a R model with a 350 and a 9 speed with I think 5.02 mack rears on 11r22.5 tires. it was a over the road truck and I drove it from Chicago to New York a few times hauling U.S. mail. I thought it was absolutely a great truck to run OTR with. It would do 65MPH at 1800RPM so when a hill came up on you , the RPMs were right where they needed to be. you just held it to the floor and it would hold the gear most of the time....It maxed out at just under 80mph at 2100RPM.
