  1. The differnce in cabs is mainly the cowl where the hood lines up to the cab . Older R models had the "flat top" hood. the later RD macks had a Sloped hood and the profile at the rear of the hood was different. if you google search for a 1982 mack R model and then look at a 1994 RD look at where the hoods meet the cab on the drivers side and you will see what im talking about.
  2. The R model cowl was the same from 1966 up until the introduction of the sloped hood RD. The 2 models you cant use would be a Superliner or RD cab without modifing the cowl for it. I would find a cab from the late 80s on up. I think they went to a galvanized cab in 85 and it kept rust away better ?
  3. Darwin award winner films their own death. Witness reports they were standing with one leg up on the ties hand in the air with a cell phone filming the approaching Steam locomotive. The UPRR was running an excursion out in the Denver area this weekend.. https://www.liveleak.com/view?t=CvAJz_1532292468
  4. But with mack you have no choice. you get a MP and thats it. If you have a bad taste for the MP engine your only move is to go to a new MFG. We see it all the time. Company is tired of issues with Mack and Volvo sells them on their own truck just to keep the customer. Mack has been set up for failure with this one way option platform.
  5. I think the Anthem will just lead Mack further into the dowward trend of market share. I have yet to hear one company or person even mention the "new" truck. Its not on the radar for anyone I know that is in trucking. With increased down time and parts issues who would go with a a mfg that cant deliver or keep parts in stock. And now you are limited to only Mack and Volvo dealerships for repairs. not only do they hold you hostage when you cant get parts but they rape you on the costs. I have seen 2 of them on the road. both were day cab freight trucks and no name small companys. I keep seeing more and more fleets jump to paccar Brian shared this pic recently of one of Chicago lands largest concrete outfits. Praires 8 new KW mixers. I cant recall that they ran anything but Mack in the last few decades. When Meyer sold out the new company went with KW. there is maybe 2 big company around here that use mack these days. Paulmbo and Plote and I know one of them is displeased with the last batch they got. They pulled their RDs back out because of the downtime they were suffering with the new trucks.
  6. No it's not. Volvo has pushed Mack to lose its edge in everything from styling to low operation costs. But you know that already.... How is the new Pete doing?
  7. Is this really news to any of us? 8.2 percent down to 6.9 percent in 2nd Qtr http://www.mcall.com/business/mc-biz-mack-trucks-second-quarter-results-20180719-story.html
  8. I think the injector issues Mack has is just another nail pounded into their coffin. I have noticed most of the new construction and refuse trucks I see running around Chicago are Paccar brand. Many old time Mack fleets here in Chicago have been slowly stepping away from mack to see what others have to offer. The injector cup and emission crap is really putting the hurt on them. Even the smaller out fits with just a few trucks have bought KW or Petes. you notice it when you see a well known paving company(M&J Asphalt) or Tanker company (sancken) with brand new Petes or KWs. Who knows maybe they wont work out but its very noticable if you start keeping track of who has what truck these days. and on a side note. Mack and volvo need to really think more about their fuel tank and air tank set up. it looks horrible. I see a new KW or pete with their air and fuel tank set ups looking clean and simple. Mack just has this miss matched crap on the frame rails. What is so bad about a shiny round fuel tank and some steps with batteries inside next to them. clean and simple. ok rant over .
  9. I cant really comment on the issues with LEDS / slush and Ice. I will say that even with the old bulb style headlights I still found I had to pull over and clean them of the grime and build up. I think you would find the same issues with the LED even if it has a warmer but cant speak from experience
  10. They make LED round head lights that look stock and only have a slight hint of color to them. when they are off they look 95% stock. when they are on you will have wished you had swapped over to them sooner. I recently did this conversion on a peterbilt with single square bulbs. the LED replacements for the pete were just amazing how much better I can see now. And Yes you will likely need to aim them down once installed Search for known brands such as Grote,Trux, United pacific etc....some of them are the same light but cost less.
  11. reminds me of the Maxxforce engine when they Unveiled it at Con Expo las Vegas. I laughed thinking that I could not even see the block with all the crap they bolted to it
  12. Here is a good one from 15 years ago. Some eastern European trucker ( in a volvo) that cant speak English comes into our shipping and receiving at the race team. He is looking for 300 Tower Pky. Our address is 500 Tower Pky and we are at the end of the street so someone tells him it must be the next driveway down. Again real broken English with him and no mention of what company he is looking for. About 20 mins later he comes driving back into our parking lot but with 2 police cars escorting him. The cop ask me if they can hold him and his truck in our lot while they figure some things out. "Sure no problem". One cop stays with the trucker while the other leaves. I tell the cop that stayed with the driver that this guy was just here looking for 300 Tower parkway but he did not speak English very well. The cop says " He ran into some trouble at Hewitt, thats all I will say right now" So now im a little nosy . I grab a fellow co worker and we walk over to the Hewitt HQ employee parking lot just behind us where we see cop cars all over the lot. We spot a car at the far end of the lot flipped over on its side so we walk over where we see not only is it on its side but pushed into a 3 other cars. Now we see employees are walking out of their office to see if their car was one that was hit. we look down a ways more and see people standing around another car on its side. We walk over there and we can see that not only was another car flipped but the trailer drove over the hood of a honda and the ICC bar ripped it up pretty good as well. Im looking at the path of his destruction when I notice some skid marks on the pavement. I yell to my friend to come check this out. The skid marks were from the tractor drive wheels. I say to my friend "he put the F*&^ing power divider/axle lock in" here is about 20' of tandem axle duel wheel skid marks in a zig zag shape as he pulled and pushed his way to get the trailer over the cars..... now a hewitt employee come walking up to claim his wrecked honda. his car has tire marks across the front and he is just smiling looking around asking the cops where are the cameras at... he thinks he is being played for a comedy act...the cop keeps telling him "sorry man but you are not going to be on T.V." So after a walk around the lot all in all there were about 8 or 9 damaged cars. we get back to our shop and I see that the cops have the guy in the back of the squad car and my co worker is unloading a few skids off this guys trailer. He hands me the paperwork and indeed the address on the paperwork said 300 Tower Pky with our company name on it. a very simple typo mistake. It was a shipment of oil and brake discs for us but this guy could not speak in good English to communicate with us. A very costly mistake on his part.
  13. I recall seeing a study about 10-15 years ago that claimed that the Jeep grand Cherokee was one of the most environment friendly. it took into account the parts used, where they were shipped or built at. where employees who built said parts lived and traveled to work. all the little things that most dont account for. The worst "environment friendly" cars was a Honda or Toyota hybrid with all the batteries and special parts etc.... It was the most fuel efficient MPG wise but was dead last when you look at everthing
  14. some of the turbos said muffling device casted into the housing. You could run a straight stack legally with them.
  15. that is just amazingly dumb. to think how much fuel is wasted over a lifetime and that is just from one little 330hp cat.
  16. What ever happend to Dan? He kinda fell off the planet. I know he has or had his dump truck bizz but have not heard from him in years
  17. The intercooler has a coolant leak? are you speaking of the side mount air to water charge cooler? I think they called it a cool power engine?
  18. I used PB blaster or WD40 on the treadle valve but we get a lot of salt on them every year so its a constant battle with them
  19. It still can be a mix of things. you pushed in the yellow valve (parking system), used the foot valve (service system) and then set the yellow again (parking system). the service and parking sides of the air system are all connected yet operate separate. the green needle is the service side so I would assume that the foot valve stuck a little and bleed off air thru a leaky treadle valve or quick release valve? what I would do is repete the same series of events and see if it leaks down again. or spray the treadle valve with lube and see if the issue does not come back. also make sure the trolly handle is not pulled a little
  20. If I remember right the green needle is showing air pressure on the service side of the air brake system. if the orange needle stays up that tells me the check valve is working keeping the parking side of the air system charged. but Im not real savy on the air braking systems.
  21. you will drive yourself nuts chasing a slow leak like that LOL....but I wish you luck
  22. blow out the radiator, check with a heat gun to make sure the dash gauge is correct, change thurmostat
  23. looks like the thermostat is working just fine?
  24. That's odd. Volvo/Mack says you don't need a big liter engine with fleet trucks.
