  1. that does sound dumb....there is no logic in truck building these days. they have gone the way of the most complex route because it looks good on a computer screen.
  2. I think the CH was a good truck but not as good as the R model. I never liked the looks of it. I felt day cab models looked unfinished between the cab bottom and frame components. there were excessive gaps leaving things exposed and seen on the frame. I feel KW and Pete were better at locating air tanks, batteries and fuel tanks along the frame. the macks were over complicated. but just my opinion. the CL on the other hand looked better but i never realy studied them to see what set them apart besides a longer hood
  3. I have checked their site a few times after the release.. I was questioning why there was no mention of it yet. It seems this was almost a soft release to gain interest in the new model. Are they not ramped up yet for production?
  4. Its been about 10 years but on My Western RS700 I put on a power steering box that looks just like that. I recall the bolt needs to be out all the way to pull it off the shaft. the shaft has a indent all the way around that allows about 1/4 width of the bolt to sit in. that bolt prevents it from falling off if the clamping force weakens.. hope you can follow that... So basically you need to remove the bolt and it should slide right off without much trouble if you can already feel slop in it. try turninging the steering wheel and see if it gives you the needed room to pull the bolt out
  5. This is a dumb question but did you try pulling on it with that bolt out? the bolt needs to be removed for it to slide off.
  6. Volvo was always known for driver safety. I will give them much due credit for that.
  7. Most likely because you are a foreigner (to them) and you dont speak dubja dubja.
  8. If they can stuff a MP10 under the hood of a anthem and keep it cool in the outback there is absolutely no reason they should not offer it here. I just wish they would consider a proper sized hood for a big engine. there is no reason to stuff a engine under the cab where you cant access them to work on.
  9. why have we not seen more pictures of this truck? It seams odd that it was released yet we only saw one spy shot, the pic when the announced it and a few computer generated pictures. Whats up with that?
  10. has anyone taken pics of this truck. I have seen 2 exterior photos and that's it....regarding dealer network. I dont see factory dealerships popping up right away unless its investor funded. sadly I see autocar dealers latching onto no name HD parts and service shops. kinda how mack dealers sold out after Volvo came in. if they can build the brand that could change quickly. x15 engine option? sounds like a long hood heavy haul is around the corner? what can you share kevin?
  11. I remember talking to a frame shop and the welder commented that Mack's break frames because of their stiffness and they are more brittle. he said a softer frame will take twists and abuse longer but both will eventually fail if the stress continues. I'm no metal expert it's just what I hear. I think mack has 120,000 tensile strength rails
  12. I think I saw 30 chiefs and 2 Indians in that video... no wonder they can't build a truck.
  13. I like the look of it with a Roll off better than the rear packer. I dont see WM or other larger companies looking at conventional for their packer trucks. Besides a few large citys like Chicago or NYC the days of 3 man crews on trucks are all but gone, at least thats how it is here. not to mention the better maneuverability with a low entry cab over truck. Regardless I think it will be refreshing to see a New Autocar out on the street. I know of a few people that like the Autocars better than low entry macks. I dont know what is better between each other and have never driven either but I do think Mack had something right for many years as thats all I have really seen around here until the last 5 years when WM started looking at Paccar..
  14. After looking at that new Autocar I would say Diamond T needs to step up their game if they want back in. That Autocar looks light years ahead of the DT. Wonder if they will step up?
  15. been following the rebuild all along. last few days the internet train geeks have been pouring in vids and reports on how its doing. Sounds like they are taking is slow and working some kinks out but she is running under her own steam. I never thought I would see one of these run. as a Kid we all wanted to see the biggest and best regardless and here we are today watching it ride the rails.
  16. For there first shot at a conventional in a long time it looks promising. If this thing is specked and priced right I think they could sell some trucks. them showing it as a vocational truck means they want back in the game. Its refreshing to see a old name out here trying something different. you can see they went a little retro but stands out as a modern truck as well. Looking forward to its release
  17. Any insider thought on what they are building?
  18. When I worked in auto racing. when ever a new car design was produced, failure of parts was a given. It was quite normal for us to find cracks or failures at the first race or after the first few tests early in the season. These parts when built were designed in CAD and the only testing was done with computer generated stress tests. When the parts were put under real work vibrations / stress things happen differently. It was not uncommon to pull those parts off the car, crack check them and re engineer them so they could mileage out before they were considered junk. I remember at Long Beach Grand Prix we had the whole Formula Atlantic's series on brand new shock absorbers. 3 cars had signs of leaks at the end of the weekend. We found that the aluminum "Bridge" that held the air canister to the main body of the shock cracked on all 3 cars and leaked oil. Within a few days we had a new design made and the series asked all teams to send back the shocks to us to have the parts replaced. Wen they started coming in we found a few more that were cracked. The next race was 3 weeks away, my self and 2 others had the job to replace about 150 of these parts. This was not just a simple bolt on and go. We had to tear the damper apart and then install the new part then bleed it with fluid then test on a machine to show they were matching and as good as new. That being said Mack has had years to solve this somewhat simple issue of cup failures. It may be a huge task to re design the head so this stops but what they are doing by band aiding the issue has caused them more harm than good. Anyone that knows mack knows about this issue. I know bolt torque is a important assembly process but if the bolt is to small or the pressure that is pushing on the injector is to great you will just end up with torque specs that don't maintain regardless to what you set them to. I suspect them asking to have this "magic paste" used was another band aid to allow the injector to move around a little with the vibrations that again proved to do nothing but made it last another 10-20 thousand miles. It sounds to me like the head or the injector has a serious flaw that nothing seams to help it. the time is now to stop dancing around this issue and address the problem correctly. they really need to improve on their well known reliability issues. its killing Mack at the moment.
  19. there goes more of Macks Refuse market if they dont step it up. as much as I hate electric trucks and think the tech is not there yet. big citys will gladly look into this for garbage fleets.
  20. Anyone living in a big city where you see fleets and lots of trucks would have seen this coming by simply watching who was buying what. Volvo would have seen it at the same time if they had retained good mack people and listened to them. But Volvo knows better and they were busy putting all their focus on a 30 year old truck, adding a slightly different styled hood complete with a proven unreliable engine under it then having the balls to call it a new Mack truck... Yeah thats the answer! The people at the top just dont seam to care or are just that dumb to think they can fool owners. Thru the last 10 years they have taken all the Mack Dealers and changed them over to Volvo dealers and do not try and sell or build reliability into their trucks. They dont even push sales or listen to fleet owners who are having the same issues over and over again. It seams obvious to anyone who goes to a dealership that Volvo is naive to what they have done to Mack. Volvo just is not maintaing or keeping Mack in step with others. I am still amazed they pump money into rebuilding the mack plants and then literally just open the door for paccar to walk in a take market share away. P.S I chuckle when people say Mack is stronger than ever with this Anthem truck. When build lead times are a year out. Who the hell would want a mack right now when you cant even get one because of their incompetence. Trent
  21. I went to see that movie when I was 11 or 12 with a friend and his family. It did make us jump. even back then that scene with the truck hitting the kid gave me chills..
  22. sounds like a weak pump or you have an internal leak such as a piston cooling nozzle has come louse?
  23. I have never driven the older 2 stick 5 speed with the over drive but all of the 2 stick 6 Direct 6 speeds had some sort of whine to them. some it was just felt in the stick others were more of a howl... the good thing is all of them were damm near bullet proof. I can only think of a few that needed bearings or something normal for wear items.
