that sounds good to me. Most of the E6's I drove hot Idled around 25-30psi and as soon as you touched the throttle it would jump to around 50psi. At high idle it would push around 65psi... sounds to me like its still at the high end of specs and thats a good thing! as far as temps. my truck was always happy if it maintained 180* and did not go much past 205* on a good pull

Granites with spokes
Lmackattack replied to autocardc's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
When I had a dump trailer with spokes the way I removed the hub to do seals and brakes was like this. back the trailer wheel over a steel plate on the ground jack the axle up in the center just to get it 1/16 of an inch up off the plate. spray some pb blaster on the plate under the tire and let is down just so the tires barely touched. remove the hub nut and bearings, slide the whole assembly off the axle using the oiled down plate to help it slide. it sounds like a pita but it saved alot of time and was very easy to do. they made a jack stand tool for this that cradled the tires and you did not need to use a plate and oil but I did not have one. -
the front mount intercooler will keep intake air cooler on a 285 and help with keeping EGTs down. you basicly could set the 285pump to 300 specs. I have never looked at the difference in 285 and 300 fuel settings they are likely very close?

Thanks Guys... they PM'ed me a few months ago but I had not logged in for quite some time. it was nice of them to consider my junk for one of the Truck of the month... I need to get her out more. I do miss driving the old dog.

Different R hoods
Lmackattack replied to JoeH's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
If I recall right when the mack 300 with front mount intercooling was introduced they added a extra inch or 2 to the hood. this was around 81' early R models had a body line at the back of the fender. this went away some time in the mid 70s? -
Endt 865 questions
Lmackattack replied to Mack man 1973's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
as hobby truck it will be fine. Check the rods and mains as most of these older V8s I have been around had them done around that milage. -
I drove a Pete 330 6 wheeler with a Cat 3126 (later cat C7)rated at 300 HP. It did a ok job for a 6 wheeler being used to haul light landscaping stuff but was not a strong runner at all when we loaded it down with clay to its max legal weight limit. (I think we were limited to 54,000lbs) I dont think you would be happy with a C10 (630 cubic inch) at all loaded down to 70k . that 330 I drove had a manual trans and when ever we were in soft ground it was not happy. you also had to keep it wound up just to keep you speed up. It was like driving a old 2 stroke. Sounds like you are looking at a Class 8 truck that was speced for light weight use. I would want a c13 at minimum for a triaxle

Stoped there a few times over the years. His son has the shop next door. I think they just collect and rarely sell trucks. They have some neat old Iron thats for sure

But all the bolts with over sized washers chew thru the plastic that they hold onto LOL!!! -
I assumed it was a auto power divider. my bad
-
is it a the power divider kicking in?
-
The stuff I do on site with a tractor trailer dump truck the full locking rear and locked in power divider on a dash switch has gotten me out of stuff that a Mack auto power divider would never have. The mack auto power divider is great for normal dirt work and starts working before you feel the need for it. But if you do any site work in slick mud where you need to stop and start with more traction the locking rears are a huge help. You do need to know your limits. if the truck is sunk and does not want to move dont force it. get a chain. you also want to have a HD drive line for the added stress just my .02

i dont know what all is involved to convert back to mechanical vs Electric but i never did like the throttle response of the electronic macks of that era. they felt lazy and slow
-
Early R models had the 865/866 v8 as well as detroit V8 as a option. It will fit in the frame. the issue might be the hood is to short.

What are these rears rated for?

take some pics of what you have. that will help see what set up you got and give us a better clue -
I think dynamat has one of the better decibel damping to them but what makes the biggest differences is covering the whole cab and any holes in the fire wall. also adding it in the doors to dampen the vibration that is amplified in the hollow part of the door. What I did on my 1977 R model is use some peel and stick asphalt roofing membrane sold at home depot. its less than 1/2 the cost of dynamat and it came in a roll about 12' wide that covered more area. It looks just like dynamat. before I installed it I had painted the cab floor, roof, rear wall, inside the doors with a rubber 3m spray. then I put cut and stuck the sheets on the interior using a wood roller wheel to force it to conform to corners in the sheet metal. I covered the whole interior with it including doors and fire wall. I then put down a carpet rubber waterproof floor mat. the fire wall got a 1/8" foam covering that was glued to the roofing sheets. When all said and done it made the truck fairly quiet considering its age. I could hear the radio with out having to crank it up. phone calls were easy to hear. no vibrations. when I shut the door it sounds like a solid chunk of wood. non of that pop can sound anymore

mack medium duty trucks
Lmackattack replied to jettertrucks's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
Lets not forget paccar. almost every new field service truck I see is a KW or Pete. Once again Mack is late to the party and they will likely try and sell it like they did with the titan. , to much money for a truck that has no options for the market it is competing in. I will eat my words if they prove me wrong -
mack medium duty trucks
Lmackattack replied to jettertrucks's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
This right here... Just about every "Mack" dealer I know of around me is no longer a dealership. they have all sold out to Truck sales or some other no name company that repair trucks but can also sell you a new KW, volvo or International etc... The last Mack dealer near me that sold out was Northern IL Mack. They sold to M&K but many of the employees stuck around for a while. you can tell it was a mack dealer as they still service alot of macks but the parking lot is no longer filled with new and used trucks like they use to be. all the other M&K dealers look like they sell Volvo only. you might see 2 used macks in the back with 100 new volvos out front for sale -
Granite vs T800 and T880
Lmackattack replied to james j neiweem's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
I still think it has a better frame. at least last I checked on a 2010 model. The frame paint wiring, plumbing etc... was still better than that of a paccar. what ever paccar does when they paint their frame is a joke. it flakes off like it was not even prepped. the 2001 I drive has been painted 2 times that I know of and it still looks like crap. my 1978 mack is covered better than what ever they use today -
Granite vs T800 and T880
Lmackattack replied to james j neiweem's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
The Granite may be a better built truck down to the frame but with volvo electrical and engine issues it has pushed owners to look at other brands. Waste Managment went with Peterbilt recently. In the last 2 years I see more Paccar trucks arriving as new units in large fleets once held my mack. The big mixer fleets in Chicago that were mostly Mack are now buying new KWs. -
R Model Door Panels
Lmackattack replied to AZB755V8's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I had a door panel made that looks like Robs. I took my old panel and cut the stamped dog out of it and had them sew it into the new panel. -
I know a few people that swapped in a Over drive Eaton be hind a maxidyne to get down the road faster and at a slower RPM. It worked for them but if does change the driving style of the truck. the low end grunt was there but the gears were shorter. most skiped gears when empty. when on the highway as long as the engine cruised around 1600 and above EGT temps stayed cool and was happy. the engine was built for low RPM grunt but it liked upper rpms to stay cool.

On many of the early R models with maxidynes the turbos had Muffling device cast into the exhaust housing. that being said I dont recall ever seeing a factory spec 237 powered mack without a muffler. even the U models had a compact muffler down near the frame with a long stright pipe running up the side of the cab. when you say brackets. there were many versions of exhaust used thry the years. you need to be more specific on what year. early R models used the cab mount/fuel tank bracket to hold the bottome of the stack and a rubber strap up near the top of the cab drip rail .

Is Volvo Good Or Bad For Mack Trucks?
Lmackattack replied to Barry's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
When Ozinga bought out meyer. Mack lost that buisness. Waste Managment has started buying paccar garbage trucks. I have not seen a new WM mack in a while. UPS has been buying KW and others. Almost every excavation company that ran macks bought a Pete or KW for a lowboy truck and then started to change over their fleet to paccar. I said it 15 years ago.. Paccar was moving in to the vocational market with serious intent and they are winning today. -
