Vibration that 2 mechanics and Mack dealer can’t figure out
Lmackattack replied to RobM626's topic in Engine and Transmission
I could only see it on my phone......the vid was not very clear for me to see where the issue is as the RPMs were always moving up and down and I cant gather where in the RPM range the vibration was or how bad it surges when you hold the RPM -
PJ'S TRUCKING
Lmackattack replied to polracer01's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Nice looking lowboy tractor -
I drove a granite with a MP8 for the first time the other day pulling a 3 axle low boy with a PC160 and a few spare attachments. was only about 80k gross and I was fairly impressed with how smooth the engine pulled the truck up to speed. The engine brake was very strong as well, I popped the hood and what a mess.... All I could think was that although the engine was pulling great I know one day will come that all that emissions crap will fail and render it a POS and cost the owner thousands. If I was to own one of those trucks I would seriously look to pull all that stuff off and just let the diesel do its thing .

12 speed extended range switch leaking in direct
Lmackattack replied to EWB555's topic in Engine and Transmission
sounds like the dash switch is bad or the inversion valve is bad . the dash switch has 2 ports that one or the other has pressure going to it depending on the position of the selector on the stick. if the inversion valve is sticking it may be stuck half open and exhausting when it should not be? someone just posted this pic the other day -
I bought a set of white walls for my old Cadillac about 10 years ago. company called Coker Tire was producing them but they make them for hot rods and pickup trucks only. I dont really like them on Big trucks but think it is kinda cool to know someone made them
-
there is a company up here in Palatine IL that has done work for just about everyone with a old truck that needs springs or older parts http://www.spring-align.com/ they do just about anything but not sure how helpful over the phone as with most shops they want to see it first.
-
might want to save the mirror brackets if they are any good. if they sell for anything like the B models do you will make a good penny for them someday

Where does one get the White wall tires in truck sizes?

Vibration that 2 mechanics and Mack dealer can’t figure out
Lmackattack replied to RobM626's topic in Engine and Transmission
was that on a mack engine? I ask because I think on a cummins or Detroit it can cause vibration if the compressor is not timed or something. I recall a old timer telling me about that when i was putting a compressor on my 285 Mack. I have never done a compressor on cummins or detroit so Have no clue. -
Im sure a cummins can squeeze in a new anthem but do you really want a short hood truck with a big big engine under it? I know I would not want that set up just for maintenance reasons alone. I still cant wrap my head around this concept of stuffing a large engine under a small hood. I remember in the 70s when makes built a truck around the engine. Knowing that will one day will come that the need to removed it again or at minimum most of the bolt on parts will need to come off for service. In todays market I see no real need for MACK to only offer a short hood truck and limit its engine options. Mack has even pushed it self out of the Glider market.. I cant name one aftermarket builder that buys mack gliders and builds them to simplified specs for the more hands on trucker or company. I think thats why Pete and KW continue to do better with owner operators. they can still get a long hood and work on stuff with more simplicity.

good catch on keeping it from running away... We had a Cat 6nz turbo fail and priced a new one from Pete and another from a local company to us called J&S dist https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1&biw=1306&bih=719&ei=NGisWtbpGsrVjwSykJ2QBQ&q=r+s+distributing+minooka+il&oq=R%26S+dist&gs_l=psy-ab.1.3.0l2j0i22i30k1l8.72986.75717.0.78906.8.8.0.0.0.0.114.733.6j2.8.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..0.8.731...35i39k1j0i131k1j0i67k1j0i131i67k1j0i20i263k1j0i22i10i30k1.0.8KO6gzEmtzg the one we got from J&S has been going strong for over a year now with no issues and it was 1/2 the price. might try looking for a local rebuild shop or ask around for where others have theres rebuilt at. you will want to wash out the intercooler real good as oil will be pooled in the bottom of it. also pull the air filter and make sure none of the shapnel went that way. it sounds crazy but the wheel metal will go towards the filter some times as soon as the turbo destructs and boost pushes it backwards into the filter.

If its the 8 speed I recall I mostly started a heavy load in 2nd/low then a quick flip it into hi as I move the stick back into 1st. I really disliked this trans because that when loaded you had to use the low side for at least 1 gear. starting out in 1st low and shifting up thru the gears was pointless. when empty I think I would just run 1-2-3-4-5 in hi. I liked the older 2 stick 6 speeds much better

I would like to know the price tag. If you recall the Titan was over priced and lacked sleeper options....
-
I would only hope so

Mack and cummins have been a long standing partner. I remember lots of Superliners with them and lastly the some of the last CL's. after that I have not seen one under the hood of a Mack. But in today's car and truck world mfg do not like to share or use other peoples stuff. With all the special tools and costly download crap it seams it may be better (for the truck MFG and dealerships) to have their own stuff under the hood just for troubleshooting the endless emission crap and such. Its not like it use to be where you just drop in any diesel and any shop wrench could work on them. I know as a owner this is not the idea case. A owner would like to have engine options for a truck that he is looking to buy. His garage may already have tools or know how to work on cummins and would want to buy a Mack with one under the hood. But that wont happen with volvo running things. This clearly shows that they killed off the low volume sales of their overpriced Titan and now introduce a volvo with the same options. Volvo killed off the mack titan, Mack is bleeding in the refuse and cement market. and they are clearly focused now on fleet spec OTR and day cab chassis with their "new" Anthem line. Yes Mack (volvo) makes a nice truck but just they seams to lack just about everything that long standing Mack customers want to see in a Mack. What I see today is many New customers buying a Mack but what worrys me is I see many longstanding customers forced into dropping them. Volvo is gambling that they will build a new brand of truck and those new people will continue to follow knowing the old customers wont. Seams risky to me sad days from my perspective Trent

Vibration that 2 mechanics and Mack dealer can’t figure out
Lmackattack replied to RobM626's topic in Engine and Transmission
if you think it is crank related you might try to bar the engine back and forth and see if the flywheel is moving at the same rate. if you have any slop at all. there is your issue. -
I have a 12 speed still waiting to go in behind my 285 with 4.17s I think I figured it would do around 78 MPH flat on the floor
-
that tag tells me its a 285hp Maxidyne...

I will also make a comment about R models in general . Some were rock solid and drove as smooth as other trucks. then you had some that felt like they spent more time in the air than on the pavement. Most 6 wheeler Macks I drove were well planted to the ground and were smooth driving and running with that extra weight of the dump bed took out any engine vibrations. A superliner with air ride cab was quieter than a standard R model with air ride cab etc...My experience it was the R model tractors was that would tend to vibrate more. What im getting at is these R models all had more vibration than a modern day truck or one made of aluminum. ones opinion of a "bad" vibration may be completely normal to someone else. And without one being there to see or feel it its best to get a few opinions on it. -
glad to see all the old pics Rob. Its been a while sense I have seen the old trucks you have
-
Rob I was under the asumption that all 300+ were of air and water charge cooled. I see yours is just air to air
-
that has the air and water charge cooler you can see the upper section has the water passage. here is a pic of one up close
-
from what I recall yes. The most common were in 285 and 315hp. however there were some very early 300 and 350 ratings with the water and air side mount cooler. I have yet to see one of these but many discussions on them coming out just before the front mount intercooling
