  1. I think that's what I'm going to suggest. I don't know who's driving it back but I know the truck has plenty of gauges and the biggest hill is Mount Eagle in Tennessee. It's also fairly cool out most of the trip.
  2. Question for you guys. Friend just called me with a question on a company truck they run. It has a exhaust leak at the head/manifold.. its a Electronic Cat (Think its a C15 or 3406E) He wanted to know if its safe to drive it 1000 miles home to have it fixed or if it will burn up a turbo or valve going that far? I had told him it can be a risk depending how bad the leak was with wires or hoses near the leak......but then thought about how many trucks I drove that had leaks near the head that ran fine for years.....reason Im on the fence about him driving it home is that on my 77' Mack I bought 10 years ago had a failed gasket. when replacing the gasket I found out I had a bad turbo housing. the failed manifold gasket may have caused my hpusing issue as it melted the diverter plate in the snail all the way around. Anyone seen this same issue from a failed gasket before? can it burn up a valve? He has a day to make up his mind before the trip home. Thoughts Thank you
  3. at the job I worked at for 14 years full time and still do part time. we had 5 trucks total and 2 of them needed cups. Both were 3406E model Cats at 425 and 550 HP settings. both trucks had around 500,000 on them at the time a cup failed .
  4. I can see this as a nice feature but again I have to ask 3 things. How easy is it to service. and how much does it cost. and whats the service life. If any of those 3 dont offer a owner an advantage than its of no use.
  5. I recall Pittsburgh power made a conversion on a Electronic cat over to mechanical. I think it was before the days of people getting their hands into the ECM and such. Wonder how reliable it was? I would love to see a mack MP8 or MP10 done up the same way and see if it performs better or worse than these current ones with all the garbage bolted to them.
  6. just seeing how things are done in auto racing where they push things to extreme weight savings and built with little regard to a long life cycle as the race parts just get replaced very often anyways. I see this similarity in new gas and diesel engines. These auto and truck mfgs are not pushing for longevity and simplicity they are pushing for a light weight complex engine that runs great when the 20 things bolted to it are working. but if one part rusts clogs, or a sensor goes bad it then takes out other possible major parts with it and makes the engine a turd. With a truck you don't even want to think about this kind of stuff. A truck should make it until half or 3/4 of a normal service life of a tractor for when nickle and dime stuff starts to fail. This is where I just cant wrap my head around the concept of a Class 8 engine builder building a solid engine platform and then littering it with lots of high cost complex parts. I know the EPA is a major blame to this so I do see the issues from both the builders perspective as well.
  7. Am I the only one here that is thinking all this "forward thinking" is nothing but foolish ways to make a diesel more complicated than it needs to be. Air and fuel is what a diesel needs. Stuffing a valve cover with electronics and fuel lines around moving parts just makes repair tasks and costs that much more. A turbo with a trick expensive device that puts more HP into the engine yet will likely fail a few times in the trucks life time or cause a major failure of the engine? did that "50hp" device truly deliver a need for the engine vs bumping the fuel up to compensate some more HP? I can under stand a common rail thru the head (not valve cover) as it heats the fuel and centralizes the fuel feed path in the heads for all injectors. but as we saw with other Diesel engines that can put fuel in the crank case/or coolant system when it does fail. You know what I think more people would like to see. A engine that they can work on and trouble shoot. Could you imagine fleet spec trucks that the company mechanic could do most of the work on? I look at older engines both gas and Diesel then look at the new junk and have to wonder who the hell really thinks we have built better new designs than the more simplified older engines. Some things we cant argue like today's machining process and tighter fitment of parts for reliability emissions etc...but they way we have arrived is 180 from the standard. end rant Trent
  8. The railroads tried hydraulic transmissions in the 60s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krauss-Maffei_ML_4000_C'C'
  9. I hear a rumor that some Tesla employee checks were bouncing as of last Friday. pure speculation on my part but wondering if anyone had heard of this as well?
  10. If he has a standard H4 housing he can replace them with the LED housings and its all plug and play for starting around $80.
  11. I know the set back CH and the set forward CH had diffrent style headlight buckets ...Are these lights like a old H4 set up where you can remove the housing? I know they make all sorts of different sizes in LED but I dont think they make a size for the set back axle CH as its specific to mack?
  12. I have some of these on the pete I drive https://truxaccessories.com/headlights/4-x-6/4-x-6-super-value-led-headlight I replaced the stock H4 style housigns with these and it was a huge improvement at night. I think the issue you may have is that you will have to go with a bulb replacement only as they might not make these in larger housings? I have seen some visions and Ch macks with aftermarket headlights but cant comment on who makes them. I did my research watching youtube and then went and found the lights at a truck stop.
  13. A v12 will not fit under a R700 Hood. They did put them in RS/RL700L's but they needed cowl extension panels
  14. Well look at that... the big X15 cummins engine again only goes to Volvo models. And volvo tows the line that mack only needs a MP8.
  15. thats why I went to google and left a review. they cant delete them...(as far as I know)
  16. I was just going to say. the under reach is fine for when you are broke down on pavement but when you are just stuck in the dump with sunken axles the tow hooks still need to be used to get the truck back to solid ground
  17. Just a thought...If this mack has the 33.5" frame width (out side to out side of the rails)Cut the stock frame behind the cab leaving the outer rail extending to the nearest crossmember Then find a Cut off with a standard frame width of 34". Take the cut off frame and roll it in over the trucks stock outer rail. weld and or bolt it up with 2 cross members to support the splice . I have the same issue with one of my trucks and will likely get rid of the stock frame and use a single frame cut off that will slip over the stock rails fairly easy. IT will be alot cheaper to do it this way than to put new rails in.
  18. Gearhead204 came thru with the Shift knob for my 12 speed... Thank you .... H even sent it before my check arrived...(USPS is making me look bad) got all my parts now just need to find time to get it in and a drive shaft made up...
  19. My B75 with a 285 has a Driver side starter but it also has a R model style clutch pedal.. I think the clutch pedal is going to be the issue for you?
  20. I know I have seen 2 styles of R model visors. I think both were made by lund. One is squared off like vlad posted the other was a more rounded profile. I think the one posted could be for a mack R as it looks like the roof vent would be in line with the indents of the visor top. ?
  21. I left a review on the google page https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-ab&ei=YPIWWuWKDaS3jwS_zZOABg&q=country+inn+and+suites+New+Centre+Drive%2C+Wilmington+NC&oq=country+inn+and+suites+New+Centre+Drive%2C+Wilmington+NC&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0i22i30k1l2.955.2152.0.2922.2.2.0.0.0.0.110.201.1j1.2.0....0...1c.2.64.psy-ab..0.2.200...0.0.kxkqIPcKqyc#lrd=0x89a9f527fc0a4adf:0x8b0f866462471691,1,,,
  22. Same issues in the race parts industry when it comes to electronic parts,ECU, Dash reprogramming... etc.... When we had teams asking us for basic pin out or info on items they bought from us we had nothing but trouble with the European companies. Even their tech reps gave us a hard time. Many times We had to go to the Race car series and get them to demand the release of otherwise basic info for our customers. After all the Series was who made agreements with these MFG parts suppliers and then they tried to back door them by charging for info on them. and even when we got the info it was in German or french and we still had to decipher thru the maze of wording and color codes... Im glad I dont work in that industry anymore as its just become a PITA with everthing.
  23. No, hers are not that big
  24. Here let me help.......its hard to see but I out lined it for you
  25. It likely moves along well because it has no emission crap bolted to it. ?? I don't think military or emergency trucks come with EPA crap on them?
