  2. Been out of trucking 5 years now and decided I wanted a play toy. So just bought a 1980 Ford L9000 with a 6V92TA Detroit Diesel and Allison transmission. Truck has 162,000 KM on odo but has way less in reality because when the PTO/pumps are engaged it runs the speedo at around 10 MPH. My intent was to pull the body off and put a flatbed on it to haul my 1967 Ford tractor on it to the shows and use it as basically my pickup truck. But it's in such good shape and so many people have shown interest in preserving it as a fire truck, I'm going to keep it as is for now. That 6V92TA seems to be pretty good on fuel. It's no big expense to drive around. And boy does it sound sweet! It's been oil sprayed every year, so the rims and everything are black right now, I haven't washed it all off yet.

  3. Sold my B75 yesterday to a nice young Gentleman from Easter KY. It was a cool old truck sitting up higher on a 78' R model Frame. but it had frame issues and I just didnt have the time to giver her what she needed. The kid already has a good western star frame with air ride rears and I think he might swap the B75 body and engine over into his good frame. This Truck has a 285 Tipturbine with a 5 speed and 3.87 rears. R model Steering and steering column that made it a breeze to turn. If had not been running since late october but we got it fired up pushing it with a cat excavator and he drove it up on the trailer. first time I had started it in winter temps and it was not too dificult all considering I was pushing with an excavator and had no speed with it. It was refreshing to see a young man with intrest in the old Iron. even brought his grand dad with him for the 20hr round trip. sad to see it go but hope this young man can do more with it than I can. Great guy if you know him heres some photos I took yesterday

  4. Hi all,Iv been meaning to do this for a few weeks now but just been too busy. The transformation of our Cruiseliner to how we want it began about 8 weeks ago.We got the use of a machinery shed on a farm through a friend of a friend and work on the truck is going on at a break neck speed. We working every hour we have to spare on the truck.....So what have we done??? So far we have reconditioned the rad and Intercooler, new wheel seals, checked over the brakes, steering, removed a homemade hitch off the rear and remade the frame to original lenth, rebuit the 5th wheel, striped the frame back to bare metal and repainted it along with a thousand other small parts and painted the engine and gearbox and fitted new alternator.....My brother who is retired,my son and myself are exhausted!!!!! We have use of the shed for another few weeks and hope to get the cab painted and chase down a few electrical faults....Heres a few pics... Paul

  5. I would like to thank everyone for the support and comments during the restoration of my Coca Cola LJ , it’s pretty much done except for maybe some rear fenders,, My goal at 66; years old was to relax for a bit, finish repairs on my shop from the flood damage and enjoy some truck and car shows. But with the encouragement of my 10 year old Grandson ( And some friends that know what a Freedom Mack is) I’m going to try to restore Our 87 Freedom. Probably not to the extent that I did the LJ , but hopefully it will make a nice truck to pull a lowboy if I want to haul the LJ ,LTH or C Model to a show. I actually bought this truck about 10 years ago to use, not really knowing what a Freedom was. And I have used it, I’ve had it to every Dam in Western North Carolina on the TVA system, I bought it because I needed a day cab for the rough places. I have talked to a couple people who have Freedoms , I have read some old posts on here about them, If anyone has any information I would appreciate it, I would love to know how many are left. This truck has had the hood replaced with a aftermarket hood and repainted a lighter grey ,my goal is to get it back to the original color and decals. thanks again for all the support.

  8. I got Raleigh Signs to make some decals for the doors on the CH. Not only does it look much better with something on the doors- in my opinion anyway- they cover up the old "Grand Home Furnishings" that you could still read. There's so many scratches under those signs that you'd think somebody took the old lettering off with an axe. I'm making some beef jerky today. Got the idea and recipe from Hippy, 70mackMB. Looking pretty good. It's done, as far as being cooked, I eat a piece of it every time I add wood to the fire, but I want it completely dried- I guess, I've never made jerky before. It's been smoking since 10am, at about 150 degrees. I've got black pepper strips on top, teriyaki on the bottom. Looks like that top rack was cooking much fast than the bottom, so I moved some around. When I tasted the pepper jerky that's all I could taste- black pepper. But the teriyaki was really good.

  9. Put Lanova engine into the NR chassis of Friday. The chassis was completed 12 years ago and the engine first started 8 years ago. The 2nd story was untold due to shortage of time. Now the things look more promising than before but still damn amount of tinkering ahead.

  10. Well, my initial intent was to replace it with something newer. But, I thought I might just see what I had and make a decision later. After tearing into it, it was just one bearing on the mainshaft that was the big problem. I have it completely apart and washing it up now. Fresh out of the truck. Lids off, back box off. Compound gears. Good shape. Grimey parts Getting mainshaft out. Sleeve was stuck. Clean parts. Mainshaft out. Someone plugged the 1st oil galley, hence bushing worn and bearing junk. Trashed, why it had 1/4" slop in shaft. Dressed the ID of sleeve so it slips over shaft easily now. Main box going for cleaning this week. I have basic bearing list. Everything seems available. Even the dreaded "double taper cone" in the back box. I found a couple new Timken on eBay for under $100? I heard that was the whole deal with rebuilding these old transmissions. All the rest are off the shelf. Will update as I go along in the next few weeks. I had no clue as I dug into this thing but I figured why not? It is already in bad shape, and if I can vastly improve it I might as well before going through the work of replacing it with an Eaton. There is still a lot of work to be done but I think it will work out in the end. I want to thank Matt and Kevin for their assistance in getting it to this point.

  11. Took the forms down today, we are going to let it cure for a week or so, before we start setting the beams. I bought a complete bridge and hauled it in ( it was a NC state road bridge) . The shop is for our business, we occasionally work on customers trucks, but mostly ours that we haul equipment with.and usually there’s an antique project in the corner. Thanks for the compliments , I’ve learned a lot from some of the guys on this site and have personally seen some of their work that’s amazing!

  12. Well its taken me along time to give an update. But here we go .Sorry for the wait 😀 I did lots of polishing , some painting and some fixing . Can you believe that it needed a lower rad hose and the International dealer could still look up the part number and FIND it . I couldn't believe it . I've had it to some shows and was able to find one of the previous owners . He had it in the 90's and had a fertilizer tender on it . Thats why it had a hydraulic tank and pump. I still don't know who bought it originally . So its still a mystery why it was spec'd the way it was . The trans works good and the transmission retarder works amazing. Thanks again to everyone that helped me figure it out . Other than keep history alive it doesn't really have a purpose. But I love starting it up and cruising around a bit in it . Takes me back to a very simple time.

  14. Hello Forum members! I have some updates on the B-Model restoration today. I have new steer tires and rims. My wife did not want me to try and use the old rims, (hazard) so I went to Schierl tire and purchased new rims and tires. I also did not like the stained boards; I painted them white while the tires and rims were being mounted. The brakes are now working! It had a leak that I fixed, turn signals and brake lights are installed and working. It's starting to look like a truck again! Best Regards.....Frank

  15. Busy, busy with the B73 this weekend!! Spent Saturday morning cleaning it up from Lititz for an event Sunday. Then Saturday evening my wife and I were in our Tahoe enroute to a family event, when a brake issue left us stranded. Rescued it with the B73. Then out all day Sunday at the “Back the Blue” motorcycle ride and car show, hauling vehicles for the State Police Museum. Another great event and weekend with the truck!!

  16. I've been apart of your group for way too long now without a Mack truck, that is until today. I got a 1972 RS700L with a 283 Tipturbine, twin stick 5+2, and a grain box on the back. The owner extended the frame and swapped out the original V8 due to leaking liners and no parts (the door tags are gone so I have no way to confirm this for sure). The 283 engine runs very strong with no blow by and plenty of power! couldn't be happier! Never driven a twin stick so I'm still getting used to that, I just left it in direct the whole drive home but I'd imagine with 750 bushels on the back I'll need em. She drives like a dream! No squeaks or rattles, just smooth even unloaded. I've got lots of questions though! Much more to come!

  18. Made a two hour run up to Foxboro, MA yesterday to the Springbrook show put on by D. Rounds Trucking and G. Greene Construction. It wasn't on any of my lists of up coming shows, but timing wise it worked out with my schedule. It was held at their facilities which are adjacent to each other. Started out leaving the house about 6AM in heavy fog and drizzle, but by afternoon cleared up for a great ride home by 5PM. Lots of local trucks from the greater Boston area and a chance to see G. Greene's collection of restored trucks in a special built garage just to hold them. I'm so envious of that facility. My brother lives about a half hour away from there, so we got to spend the day together along with my nephew for a little while. Truck ran great and had no issues at all with it. It is very loud when you're in it for that long of a trip. It's going to get a muffler at some point. Still amazes me to see it in one piece and restored. other than the exhaust noise, it's so comfortable to drive with that big, roomy L cab. Another greatshow and day with the B73

  20. Greetings - New to the forum and searching around for information I need. I purchased this 1980 Superliner about six months ago. I am preparing to put it to work in the next thirty days. It is powered by a 4MG serial code ATAAC B Model Caterpillar, RTLO18918B, and has TopLoader rears on Neway, 4.17 ratio. I will be doing all of the work to this truck. I am located in Northcentral PA and am a leased owner operator to William A. Spencer Jr. Trucking in Watsontown, PA. I also have a W900A Kenworth that I am restoring and a 79 Scout II that I daily drive. This is solid old Superliner with an aluminum frame. The frame is actually is very good shape, as is the rest of the truck. The bunk is by far the worst part, especially the roof, which is not currently weather tight by any stretch of the imagination. Looking forward to the journey. The truck runs and drives excellent.

  21. Good evening everyone and thanks for having me! I have already asked a few question's but wanted to post on here and introduce myself. My father and had a 1966 Mack R600 twin stick when I was younger and that's what I learned to drive truck in. Since then we have sold that truck and have had a few trucks since then and nothing really compared to that old R600. Well I finally pulled the trigger and found a nice sold superliner( 1986, RW613, E6 350, 9 speed, Neway rear air) that seems to Have good bones and cab. Few mechanical issues but for the price I can fix that. Need and little inspiration on what direction (looks) I want to go because I will be painting the cab and frame. I like more of the classic look with some 24.5 talls. So lets see the restored Superliners!! Thanks Again!

  24. Oh, the new Zinamobile- almost forgot 😁. It's got a 351M and C4 transmission out of a '78 Mercury Cougar in it. Runs great, her only issue is the lack of power steering but I think she can get used to it. If not we'll have to look into some sort of aftermarket power steering setup.

  25. Since we didn't have any pictures taken at our wedding, my wife wanted to have some buffessional type pictures taken of us. We went to this farm just a couple of miles from here and had some taken Sunday afternoon. The pictures came out good, but I'm a bit peed off- I don't understand why she cropped me out of the pictures and put this old fat guy in them- all of them! I'm gonna give her a piece of my mind when it's time to pay her for them! That doesn't make any sense, i'm just gonna- oh,..wait a second...I figured it out...never mind.

  26. Ever heard of two sisters or brothers that grew up together than went separate ways, one settling down and starting a family and the other taking off to seek fame and fortune? ,, this story takes a lot of twists and turns. About the same time I talked to Wayne Hyatt about his Father’s truck and the missing picture, I remembered reading the great article in Wheels of Time magazine about the LTH log truck that Dan Thomas had purchased from the original owner’s family in Oregon ,I still knew very little about a LTH ( a guy about 20 miles away bought 2 LTLs from out west and would bring one to our show, but I never talked to him about it very much) . I remembered the build sheet showing the next truck after mine was sent to Medford OR. I didn’t know Dan but found a number for his company on the internet, I called and asked to speak with him, the lady asked me what the call was concerning,, I told her “ A Old Mack “ if I remember correctly he called me within a hour, I told him about the truck and was wondering about the truck after it on the build sheet, I gave him my vin number and immediately he said that’s the sister truck to his! I told him about talking to the original owners son , he said he would call me back, I think less than a hour he sent me a picture of my truck ( left ) when it was about a year old and the new 56 that Kay Hyatt had bought,, it was the picture at the Booneville fair in 1956 ! “ MACK DADDY “ is the Perfect nickname for him! So his unmolested LTH spent its whole life in the same area,,, the older sister is just getting started!

  27. I’ve always appreciated old semis all the way back to my dad taking me to car shows. I never thought there would be a day that I’d find a unique truck for myself but after some unfortunate events, I stumbled across an old Mack and fell in love with it. I talked with the old man who owned it previously and offered to exchange tractor work on his property for the truck and he agreed. 4 months later and the title is in my hand! From my research and experience working on it so far, it has the END 864(I know it has issues, don’t be a stinker) and a quadruplex transmission. I’ve already done some work inside the cab to make preparations to drive it off the guys property and back to my house 5 miles away. I may be 19, but I’ve worked on engines since I could walk and have found a good connection to this truck already. Good thing I have the land to restore it. To my knowledge, there was 456 of these made, but that could just be a bunch of bull. Anybody have any fun facts a first time Mack owner should know about his truck?

  28. Well guys,Work continues on the Cruiseliner but slower than we'd like. The good news is the guy who owns the farm we are on has told us he will NOT be putting us out of the shed untill shes finnished as he wants to see her done....Apart from some re assembly all mechanical work is done. When we removed the roof trim we discovered a 3in hole that was cut in the roof and then patched. Why it was cut we dont know but the centre rib was cut right through. We rebuilt the rib and patched the hole with fiberglass but it caused a big delay in the work.....Shes back on her wheels and starting to look good...we think so anyway....... 30. Thank you for the information, Unfortunately as for the interior of the Freedom is the best part of it , The worst part is the frame, it’s aluminum, the guys we bought it from installed a plate on the outside, and did a good job, but it’s corroded at every cross member, my thought would be unbolt it under the cab , only 4 bolts on each side attach it to the big steel frame , find a air ride cut off and start changing all the brackets, but I’ve been using it this way so that’s later down the road. I may replace the hood, my number one goal is to paint it back the original grey and red stripes, it’s still the original color on the fire wall . The E6 350 runs great, 10 speed trans . It has some slack in the front spring shackles but overall it’s still pretty sound .I saw a old post were one was hit in the front but I don’t think this is the same truck, I guess it was repainted when the hood was replaced, I bought this one in Gallipolis OH . I’ve had my Helper working on it some today.

  34. Just about five months in storage. Brought the toys out of storage and home today. Weather sucked, but due to schedules and needing two drivers, it was the best time. B73 fired right up after about four turns. A little issue with a sticky starter on the B42, then she fired right off. Now to chase a bunch of gremlins on the Caddy and the '40 Ford, mostly from disuse over the last few years of concentrating on finishing up the B73.

  36. When you say "democrats", are you talking about the same people that like open borders and support illegals coming into the country to commit crimes? Came you name some examples of this "health standard" being destroyed? I cant really think of anything. Changes, maybe.....but every administration that comes thru does that. They always have and always will. One of the most reckless examples of this was the Obama era. Alot of people got the shaft on that entire deal with the Affordable Care Act, and some people benefited from the Affordable Care Act. Thats just the way it is. Tariffs? I cant honestly say they're really affecting me. Maybe im a lucky one. Can't say, but I have yet to see any significant things that makes me hate the current administration on tariffs. I do like the fact that hes actually trying to make the other countries compromise instead of letting the other countries rip America off at every turn. That part im satisfied with as an American. Weather it will work? i dont know....I guess time will tell. The current administration hasn't even been in office a full year yet. Do you think these things improve our country over night??? It takes time. Immigration? Yeah, that has helped me. I'm noticing a reduction in the foreigners that are driving trucks and causing alot of issues, accidents, rate cutting and basically trashing every facility they visit. They bring nothing but negatives to the trucking industry. Everything from incompetence to destroying rates and raising insurance premiums. I see all that first hand, so I can speak on that subject. Not sure where you got the idea of education being destroyed, but I think you better do your own research instead of hanging on to every word the leftwing activists say and the corrupt media says..... And take a break from CNN, MSNBC and pretty much ever othe news outlet for awhile. That stuff is ment to divide the nation and alot of people are taking the bait.

  37. I was lucky enough to get one. Ive had it for 3 years now . Take it to truck shows and almost every Sunday morning you will find me cruising somewhere with a smile on my face from ear to ear . The town it came from keeps in touch and even sent me pics of it when in service . I have never owned a new truck , but a retired firetruck is as close as you can come . The maintenance is impeccable . So run it for a bit . If after a bit you decide to change it , I am sure everyone will still be happy because it hasn't been cut up and the parts sent around the world . My ride . 1987 S1900 , DT466 , 5 speed , 2 speed rear . I love hot rods and trucks. So I added the flames ...... Now I have both. 😀 O , and the trophies on the bumper are from a show I was at .

  41. Well I just showed a shiny one, not common but were made for ashtrays and collectibles. It will be on the Superliner when it is restored. A few photos of it and engine, 1200hp, Ya its turned up a bit or two, Rolls coal with the best of them, staight 6" pipes, and what it does best, hauling the load. That is after turning it down a little to haul a trailer at road speed, it was a Pull Truck and did very well in Wisconsin. Full Rockwell Lockers, 18sp, big clutch, steel flywheel, etc. Was going to the Reno show a few years ago with the trailer.

  43. Good evening forum members. I have a few updates on the B model Restoration I am doing. I cleaned and painted the engine, did a complete tune up, (the engine now runs great) cleaned and reinstalled the original gas tank, (it was bypassed with a jug holding gas). The hydraulic tank for the hoist was empty now it is full and lifts the box. Also have the brakes grabbing but they need more service. First all the mechanical stuff then on to the cosmetics. Have a great New Years!.....Frank
