  1. Us spoiled rotten, we have earned it and lived through the back when.. What about our kids... I have done OK and my kids think they can just take it from there, don't think so... First cars they got to drive, yes I cosigned for it, were stick shift. "Dad no one has a standard why do I" Because you need to be using both hands and feet and stay off the phone and once you lean you won't forget what a clutch is for. Working on things is making a phone call for service and opening the hood. Forbid if they had to drive some of the stuff we did. No power steering, no radio, no air ride and the all important A/C. Times have changed wonder what they will tell their kids about progress?
  2. I remember those day and nights when the way to see if the ignition was working. When something like this: Hey Tim grab that coil wire and let me know if you feel anything when I crank it... He flies out from under the hood and lands in his ass...Guess it's got spark must be the rotor or cap. We still try the simple stuff first, I liked it that way. I cant do anything with this new electronic stuff. Tim was my 8 year old little brother when I was 16.
  3. That is another great Super, really. Just got to get the mirror dogs facing the right way. Wasn't this one restored a few years ago? I see the PA plate, think PA's got the most nice trucks of any state. Wish we had more meets and shows out west.
  4. Those things happen just not to me ether. It's like wine it get better and more expensive with age. I can't wait that long and drink it anyway... Nice Super, glad it is in good hands. Sad you did not get the big bucks Tackaberry's is a dealer so probably not double.
  5. That green Superliner look pretty good to begin with. Those guy find some nice trucks to begin with. How long until we see the finished restoration?
  6. That can't be real.... Don't think those low low profile tires are better than load range C. Wheels would be $2500 each. Only thing I can think of is the song "Little Pink Mack".... It is certainly a conversation starter. Wonder what drives it if real?
  7. I paid a $1 a mile up to $1.75 depending on where the drop deck truck is at the time. 1-2 week pick-up to delivery. That is Call for pick-up to delivery. Getting it up on the trailer would be extra unless you have a piece of equipment to help.
  8. Sort of like a spider with it's legs pulled off with the injector lines...LOL. You just don't do those things. All I know is that both the PSM & PSJ were not good pumps for the most part. A lot of problems with them for many guys. Think both came in 4, 6 & 8 cylinders versions and used on other engines.
  9. Boy I don't know, it is the one that looks like a spider from the top with all the injector lines. I'll have to get back to the barn to look at the tag. What was the difference, plunger size?
  10. As 39 Baby Mack said all the 864's except the very last ones had the single barrel pump. You could get ether an 864 or an 865/866 for a few years in the early 70's if I remember correctly. The V pumps on the 865/866 are similar but not the same as an E9. 11mm plungers in the 865/866, some with retard notch, 13mm plungers in the later E9's. Look the same though. I have a complete 864 in the barn in Ohio. Have kept it for 20 years but doubt I will every use it. It ran when I got it. Was out of one of the first R-700's. I used an 866 in my B755, PM me about it, also have good twin turbos but no manifolds.
  11. That is correct. There are 3 different standard main bearings listed for the 865/866. I rebuilt mine close to 20 years ago and could only get one of the part numbers, clearance was on the high side but in spec. I have on the low side oil pressure, min 30psi@650rpm, hot idle and 60@1500rpm. OK but I would like to see 90psi. I recently talked to a old V8 guy and said the 2 oil pump springs need replaced. I did not put new ones in at rebuild. Cant find them ether. Maybe shimming will be the only fix. It is a show truck so no real load on the engine.
  12. I like the OEM period correct look for a lot of things. I'm sort of at the edge of overdoing restorations though with detailing. Everything, brackets, tanks, bumper, seats, etc, are what I remember. I do polish and chrome parts but they are correct for the truck. Adding a few gauges and maybe power steering is a good thing. I do have one exception, got to have big period correct power. Still an old hot rodder at heart.
  13. Crank is the same 865/866. Only difference is the pump settings. Thats a deal for $800 if it is free and turns over. Won't find a good crank for less.
  14. I have heard there was upwards of 12-13000 E9's as well produced. There are still MORE than a few working every day. There are issues with them the biggest is parts availability and the cost of parts. Other thing is ALL mechanical, no plugin date logging for the man. We have had 6-8 of the early V8's. The heads and bearings were issues. We scrapped all of them except for 2, one is in my B. The reason there are few still around is that it is far easer to replace them with a I6 engine that has over 100hp and 400ft/lbs of torque more and be more reliable. Parts are an even bigger issue than the E9's. No one even knows what they are to work on them, we do all our own work. Funny, Mack here in AZ said most of their Guys have never seen one to begin with. I was the only guy to order parts for one in the last 10 years or an E9 for that matter.
  15. Have Rockwell lockers in the Superliner. Two switches, one for both axle cross-locks, other for inter-axle, (front diff to back diff), Don't know why you would do any other switch setup. Turning radius is greater with things locked together. Those lockers are pricey and can be hurt kind of easy. Take care of them. Mack has the peanuts in the rear diff to get them to lock but not standard in the front. Mack does have inter-axle air lock, common to have.
  16. I am sure you have heard "It's worth what someone is willing to pay" Condition and Spec is what most of us look at. If these need restored that to me is saying they need work. Superliners go form Scrap price to BIG bucks restored. Photos will help a lot and service records. To ask what someone here, a hard core collector, is willing to pay is playing games. Sure we all what it but at a great price, but for who? I've got trucks and cars for thousands less than what was really in them. I have put stupid money into some as well. I doubt that I would get the money out of them when I go to sell but I know the going price range. The point is you have these truck and have to know what they are worth and going to bring. Just being Honest.
  17. Mack tell you $21 for the short and like $25 for the long? I said I didn't want the whole set, it was just for one bolt! They hit you $14 a piece for the 10 gaskets? I got the gaskets and no bolts. Bought a complete set of manifolds for $200 and had $200 in bolts thrown in the box at those prices, a real good deal...
  18. I think as enginse got newer the timing was retarded for emissons. I had a few 865/866 that timing was like 21-27 degrees depending on year. Think the older E9's were around 17-19 like you said, then the E9 inline was at 13 degrees. The reason for the retard notch was to overcome the advance on the early V-punp V8's this is what I was talking about. Have you seen this before?
  19. Go big or go home, BW S500-91 turbo. Bigger money than a BW S480 though. At that point ,pump, injectors, heads, empty wallet...
  20. There are 2 O-rings that go on the return tube and silicone sealer. What you have there is a little to much, looks like the whole tube of sealer.. The return tube fits down in the block about an inch and a half to 2 inches. That tube looks like it has seen better days and may need replaced. There are only 2 bolts that hold the turbo manifold on. The third one maybe drilled in the manifold but the block is not drilled or tapped in all the E9's I have seen. If you are reusing the manifold and/or turbo the mounting surfaces are alway warped and it is hard to get a good seal. Take a straight edge and see how bad. It is worth a few dollars to have a machine shop mill them flat again maybe .010-.015 off the surfaces. Also use a divided gasket not an open one like in the photo.
  21. That is what this forum is about having an issue and collectively finding a solution. There are different ways of thinking about timing but even if we find it off to Mack spec, how did they time theses engine in the first place? I was told that the optimum timing for and E9 was 19 Degrees but is that static or dynamic readings? Valve cover states 13 degrees.
  22. Not many of those big dyno's out this side of the country. Bet it would be some $$ to get one for a few hours to test and tune. Most (all) shops don't what someone messing up a big buck piece of equipment to play around with big HP. I don't blame them ether. Last dyno my truck was on was to small and quit reading at 1100HP, don't know it it hurt the dyno but they did not test it further. If you got one in mind I will put it to work??
  23. I have a V pump on the 866 and have old plungers. On that pump there is a retard notch on the plungers for easer starting. If the rack is in full fuel it goes to this notch and retards the timing. Is it the same on your V pump or different plungers for pulling? Don't know if the notch was used on the E9. I will see if there is a notch on my inline but have not heard anyone talk about it. I have a few old plungers to take a photo if needed. I have never needed to touch the throttle to start any of my V8's. They just fire up almost instantly.
  24. Hay Albert, You what to hang on the frame rail with the timing gun pointed at the balancer while I'm going down the track hooked to the sled? You still have a old hood we could cut a hole in? That will put a good load on her for a few seconds. Oh crap forgot no passengers per the pulling rules... LOL Maybe a good use for a GoPRo camera and timing light rigged up under the hood??? Glenn got a solution just had to think about it for a minute.
