  1. TJ-I guess I was lucky I had a new 68 Torino (square back-rare!), 428 CJ, C-6 4.30 gears. think if I got 12 mpg I was doing good. Finally took the 4.30's out and put 3.25's in. Well we had a wreck out on the NYS thruway near Canajoharie one winter night. I let this young guy-hah, even younger than me then-take the car for a coffee run and he went up to exit and reversed direction. I saw him come flying back eastbound. I later said-"so Jerry-how fast were you going?" He says -"oh like 70". Needless to say, never changed speedo gear
  2. What took you so long getting out of the shop? Were you thinking you had to build air?
  3. Rich-no luck--Anyone else able to download???
  4. Thx Kevin-This should give Cummins reason to look over their shoulder-perhaps not today but not to distant future with respect to their future at Navistar.
  5. What does engine does VW/Scania make that can compete in class 6 and 7 with the 6.7 Cummins and whatever International now calls the DT-466?
  6. Well shouldn't be a surprise in Conn right? Doesn't Gabrielli sell both Mack and Volvo?? Hate to say it, but the clock is ticking IMO.
  7. Ok Nick-thx for education! Only flathead color I remember is "rust"
  8. Outstanding Nick-first time I have seen your thread-but let me ad my congrats on a Ford in a Ford! Nothing hurts me more than to see say a nice 32 Ford with the distributor on the wrong end! Only thing?? A red 429?
  9. Hopefully the guidance counselor 41 Chev's grandson had to deal with has retired. I know a problem here in Mass is there are not enough vacancies in the tech high school system to handle all the applicants. Plus from what I have read, back in the dark ages (my youth) it seems tech high schools were just that- you learned a trade. Today-again at least around here, a kid can go to a tech high school and still get his share of courses so he can also apply to a college for a 2 yr associates or 4 yr bachelors program. Think of it, a graduate engineer who knows how to weld or properly build a concrete form! The sad fact is, you have kids-and parents-that get big loans while the kids pursue absolutely worthless degrees-"philosophy", "communications" etc and then come out and work in Starbucks. My hope is people are starting to recognize a "degree" does not insure long term financial security.
  10. EJ-This guy live in a cave? Does he read newspapers or watch the news?? Obama wants every kid asking.."you want fries with that"? to make 15 bucks and this guy thinks he can get an experienced heavy truck mechanic for 13 bucks??- that's the septic tank outfit right?
  11. I agree with you-but how many "new guys" will? test will be how the old 300 series Petes for example sell vs. the "aero 500" series do.
  12. Thx Jim-Good document
  13. For sure. Just look at the news coverage of the pollution "alerts" in India and China for example. They can't see the sun at times. How is that possible? I guess when your industry has NO regulation, it becomes a given. All kinds of stories about A-36 steel plate- NOT U.S. for sure- all sorts of delamination
  14. So does the "ship through process" not apply to the bigger trucks above 350? Does that mean the truck has to go to a dealer or the the dealer has to make the "ship to" arrangement vs "checking a box" on his order? If so another reason not to get a CNG/Propane Ford IMO
  15. Well one thing I think you have to recognize-at least here in New England-say 25-30 years ago the dealer count was very heavily in Mack's favor. Today? IMO PACCAR dealers are like all over the place. To say nothing of F'liner and Volvo dealers. So from a competition perspective, it is a very different ballgame And of course, sad to say, the days when a "MACK was a MACK" are gone. And also sad to say, a lot of the old timers who built their business with Mack are also gone.
  16. Very good Brocky-you beat me to it. You can see the dispensing nozzle on the back of no. 86. 1993 placards so they are storage for diesel or heating oil
  17. Thx Kevin- I just remember an old timer one time giving me an "additional" reason why the Maxidyne with a five speed was so good-vs say a Cummins with a 10 speed RR. In essence he talked about parasitic loss because of "all the gears". granted they all aren't engaged but in a dual clutch as I understand it, you do have a lot of "gears in motion" do you not? In any case, videos are convincing in terms of smoothness
  18. ParksM If you want some motivation as to what your B-80X can be, go on Youtube.....Lancaster truck Show part 2 Go to 5:29. That is Mike Trotto's beautiful "B 81X" that started life as a B-80X tht was purchased new buy the city of Worcster , MA
  19. So this is an automated manual? How many speeds? Intended primarily for on highway service?
  20. So KSC-Euro 6? How close is this to US compliance? And this is old generation FIT that Ford builds under license?? Any similarities between this 13 liter and the two smaller (7.3? and 9L)-these are the two that many of us hope would make there way here to end up in 750.
  21. Don't think so. They have had close to a 10% lead all year long. But if in fact they (FCA) are selling for a few grand less than Ford, I think Ford will keep the "premium" selling price and let FCA enjoy the "sales crown". And keep in mind, the Fords are vertically integrated in terms of power trains when it comes to diesels (other than the small VM). No profit going to Cummins or whoever. While I beat the drum that Ford should be offering a Cummins/Allison option in class 6 and 7-assuming they don't want to bring their Duratorq 6 cyl over here- they have to be a bit more profitable in 3-4 and 5 because of that in-house capability.
  22. Bingo on the rebates! and same here in New England-for sure on the Muni- 550s. My town has a new one on order with a wing! I think that is dumb adding a wing on a 19,500 chassis but I'm told they are becoming popular. there goes my mail box! Ah- correct on the outsourced F-59 chassis. and correct that the USPS Rams are not class 3. And you are probably correct that KTP and KC build more trucks than Ram does. But we are not talking about who builds more trucks-we are talking about who sells more class 3-4-5s. And unfortunately from my Ford stockholder perspective, it is FCA-call it Dodge, Ram or Fiat.
  23. Yes EJ but We are prejudiced. As KSC says, guys buy Dodges (for sure 4500, 5500's with 6.7 Cummins) and besides saving a lot of upfront money, they have no issues. I'm not saying the 6.7 PowerStroke and Torqueshift has issues, but are they not at least typically 3 grand above a Dodge?
  24. Rich, Beautiful-great progress-hope to see it at first winter meeting in January!
  25. Ram in fact is the leader in Classes 3, 4 and 5 on a consistent basis. In any case, what are the four Ford plants that build class 3, 4 and 5? I can think of three- KTP, OAP and ?? Kansas City - assuming they are class 3 Transits?? And these are US stats by the way
