  1. Oh,I just saw the trailers been sold! Wuz gonna suggest you go online and lookup a major flatbed carrier Landstar and Mercer come to mind, and see if they have an o/o in Texas that could deck your trailer and bring it to mass. Wouldn't have been cheap tho!

  2. On the Delo/Rotella question, it's like religion and politics lol But I naturally have an anecdote! In 1978 I was fabricating a wet tank for my cousin's dump trailer, and we got into a discussion about motor oils.He asked what oil I used in my welding truck ( a c30 Chevy 350 ) I said Quaker State Deluxe.WTF are you putting that garbage in your engine for? He asked politely! He is a diesel mechanic and I think he also has an air frame license as well,so I respect his opinion on anything mechanical! He went into a 20 minute dissertation (fueled by several rolling rocks), on the virtues of Rotella T motor oil Cummins,Mack,Military, rated etc. He used to tune up all his neighbors cars, said several of them with sticking lifters and smoking exhaust(from short trips and low quality oil) were cured by one Rotella oil change! I've been using it ever since in all my vehicles and lawn equipment and have never had an engine failure.I use Castrol 0w20 in my wife's corrola because Rotella doesn't make it! In all fairness I think commercial fleets are equally divided between Rotella and Delo So my results may have been similar with Delo,I'm satisfied with rotella!

  3. On the ignition switch issue on the fire truck, a sometimes fix is spray wd 40 into it will remove moisture and often dissolve residue.Works on big truck trailer plugs and marker lite connections too. Another product good for that application is the electrical cleaner they sell in computer stores.

  4. On the subject of Jay,what I like about him is he is interested in everything mechanical, not just socially acceptable high buck stuff, lambos,Ferraris etc.He has driven virtually everything on wheels! Steam tractors, that outrageous tank engined roadster and so on.I just received a window motor from rock auto.com,for a 93Camry. 32 bucks plus shipping.(The whole unit, incl.drive assembly) they give you a choice of name brand Dorman was mentioned,or el cheapo(which I bought) the thing worked perfectly and looked like the original. they list all the major big trucks,Mack,'s etc. But only  cover later models. The part I got was 80 bucks at auto zone .That photo of Heavy gunners hay field, makes me wanna sing God bless America! And they're burning our flag!

Napa of the name brand parts stores is the last place for the remaining few quality parts made.Of course because they cater to the commercial trade. I too fab.anything I need  to hold up. when I bought my elderly but like new Isuzu p.u it had a factory step bumper, all beat up and too large for the truck.a piece of 4"channel, the"bronze wrench" and  some 6011 wire took care of that!

That may be the case in yall's area. In my area that is a monthly rate.

Just googled Clinton,so it's near Baton Rouge, did your property get flooded? Hope not, been there! For many years I laid over at the McDonald's in Denham Springs til they took out the truck parking.

My property got messed up but no homes, cars or lives were lost. My aunt and two cousins lost all three of their home and all their vehicles.

Sorry to hear about your relatives,I went through New Orleans a few times after Katrina what a mess! The tow trucker who took away my wife's flood totaled Toyota, spent a few wks in New Orleans hauling away totaled cars said there was a lot of violence. Some people came up to his truck and began beating on it demanding water! A couple rounds from his Glock 9 in the aIr and they dispersed rapidly! I spent a couple months hauling roof insulation into Miami after Andrew hit.I t looked worse than Katrina but Katrina cost more. Also, wind damage can look worse than water damage because of all the debris everywhere.

  8. Red Horse, I am npi ( no political affiliation) but I find most celebrities intolerable! But Streep was dead on concerning Trumps mocking the disabled newsman! We've all seen the clip how the f... can he or his handlers deny it? The first election I was old enough to remember was Eisenhower/ Stevenson 1950 I think, we were Democrats like 98 percent of blue collar people at the time. At some point blue collar people tended to become Republican. You have to be a certain age to remember this! Another thing I remember is that NO presidential candidate was ever rude or impolite (at least in public!) To his or her opponent! This is the person that has to deal on America's behalf with every world leader! I always thought George Bush would be a good guy  to have a beer with, but not necessarily a great world leader! Having said that I think he and Laura had a great idea by leaving the presidential part of their ballot blank! I equally deplore Trump and the entire Clinton dynasty, good riddance,I'd like to think! But we all know better! Ok my rant is over, let's talk about trucks! Well school buses actually! Dropped off my grandkids this morning and was following a school bus. It has a sign "stop when lights are flashing"  they all do right? But the damn sign is in English only! As I understand it you don't have  to speak English to "qualify" for a drivers license, they assign an interpreter right? Every major retailer has signs in English and Spanish, every product you buy has instructions in up to four languages, but

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

A person who can't speak enough ( or any) English to read the drivers test and will forget like the majority of motorists, most of what they were taught in their drivers test in a short period of time, can run over your children because they don't have a sign on the bus in Spanish to remind them to stop!

Billy- agree on the mocking-absolute BS that he was NOT mocking this guy-as I understsnd it, he had personal knowledgr of this guy-so he KNEW what his affliction  was.

  9. Retro, you seem to have it figured out on tire pressure! When I was hauling steel in an r model tandem tractor comeback susp. The company had me  "bobtail" a tractor 250mi from Pittsburgh pa. To buffalo ny. Knowing how rough the thing rode  "bobtail"  I dropped the drive tires to 50lbs from 90. Much better! This was 1974 and they were 1100/20 bias ply tires they have a stiffer sidewall than modern radials,so I'll bet if you are running "bias" you could run 30 psi long term. If you don't have power strg.you could. Probably drop it unit it affects your steering. The damn spell check changed camelback to comeback! Also, do you guys get "Jay Lenos Garage in Australia? I'd like to see  him drive a  road train.might have a little trouble with a two stick, but he's already driven a road ranger.

  10. Rowdy,,I got the Avalanche mixed up with the Aztek! You're right the Aztek is arguably the ugliest vehicle built...Ever! Also as you said, today's youngsters aren't all hopeless! I was heading for the waffle house in McDonough Ga when I realized I turned the wrong way on the ramp! So I made a u turn on the two lane and got stuck in the wet grass on the shoulder, with a 53 ft dry van! Blocked the whole road! I had visions of a 200.00 tow job when a kid about 19 and his girlfriend pull up in a brand new Dodge 1500 4wd he pulls up in front of me and throws a chain on the ground! I said "you're liable to burn up your tranny guy" " nah she'll do it"!  He says ...and it did! We both got to the Waffle House and he wouldn't even let me buy them dinner! But who else but a certifiable red neck engineer carries a 20 ft log chain in their brand new pickup?😁

Thanks Billy. Yeah he is devastated about it. He put a lot of time and money into it.

Its funny, you sorta become "mates" with your truck, or car, you give them names etcetera.

  13. Saw a couple of middle schoolers properly folding the flag as they took it down for the night. Very inspiring! My buddy,a navy veteran, saw an an adult school janitor drop the flag on the ground while doing the same thing! "Read him out",and then educated him.Of course that wasn't a protest, was just ignorance on the part of the janitor.Rowdy rebel,I agree it's their right to express themselves, but like you don't have to like it! Poetic justice if they set themselves on fire while burning our flag! Lol on a more pleasant subject, just on my beloved Isuzu p.u,I've had to create two special wrenches on for the Weber carb, another for the water neck. Standard wrenches were too long in both cases. When I realized Milwaukee power tools are now made in China,I bought one of the last American made ones in a pawnshop.40.00 ! What I didn't realize was you need a special tool to change the grinding wheel( it's a 4.5" grinder.Ground down an old pair of "off brand" channel locks for that job! Anyway,I feel your pain !

  14. smart phone? What's that? I refuse to own an electrical appliance smarter than me! for what the youngsters (that's pretty much everybody) pay for one I bought anew Hobart ac/dc welder that I can build stuff with!

  16. Speaking of thugs in the wrong  line of work,a tanker driver told me he was delivering to the old Hunts point market in the Bronx and a dude with a can of Freon and a  hammer jumped on the back of his tank at a light.(looking for a lock to break)! The trucker behind  told him on his radio," you're not gonna believe this!"  for you construction guys that may wonder what I'm talking about,What the thief does is sprays Freon on the loop of the lock (to make it brittle) then smacks the lock with a 2 lb hammer! then opens the doors and throws out some product to sell on the street. There is a message concerning evolution here, but I'll leave it to the PhD's to interpret!

You must have to be athletic as hell to accomplish this, perhaps a career in sports would be called for! I actually saw a thief jump into the back of a reefer  while the driver was backing in at the old Acme warehouse in Philly.Threw 2 cases of tomatoes to his accomplice on the ground, but the guard ran them off.Amazing the level of effort some folks will go to to avoid a days work!

  17. Sr eHvy gunner, you were worried about investing,I would recommend one of Dave Ramsey's financial advice books. He advocates "cash only" except for your home. You are already following his advice with older paid for cars and tks. Many American adults can't write a check for 500.bucks.Mostly due to credit card debt and general irresponsibility.Sam's club has his books Did. You see the pictures of the bus that ran into a telephone pole in Shop trucks area? Hwy 99 InCal. The old Grapevine.Bad crash should be in your local paper.

Swishy a B model dump truck I once drove was built from a single axle road tractor. We were dumping from a paved street into empty house pads. The tag was in the back, and it was slightly uphill so you cranked the thing wide open in  reverse, ran thru the triplex and the second the drive left the pavement you dumped the tag or you'd get stuck in the sugar sand! My buddy also drove it but he would dump the tag too late and get stuck a lot.The loader operator used  to get pissed of because he would have to drive a half mile to push him out. On the subject of the pushrods I cut one off 3 times and it was still too short!

  18. T Grrrl, have you ever heard one of  the anti truck citizens say get rid of trucks send it all by rail! Makes sense to me! After all the steel wheel is the cheapest method per ton at present to expedite freight, also the least polluting. Keeping that in mind, where in you're backyard shall we put that siding!!asshole. And who will pay for it you and I of course we've been paying for the subsidized railroads for decades! In addition to my 3 million miles of trucking I have four years as a freight car repairman at one of the only self supporting railroads in AMERICA.the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie RR.in Mckees Rocks Pa. The P and L E's number 1 customer was Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. So when the major steel companies took the profits the United Steel Workers generated and bought new state of the art mills in China,Brazil and elsewhere( under a different name of course) Our railroad went under. You almost would have to be a railroader to understand the abysmal condition of our railroads and their roadbeds and infrastructure!

Agreed, some of the shortlines are in pretty miserable shape. That said, the BNSF maintains the track that runs by me better than our state maintains highways.

T,Grrrl, thanks for the reply, you're right, having lived most of my life in the "pothole capital of the world" I understand about  unmaintained highways!

Mack man, that's amazing that a Napa clerk was that clueless,of the "chain" parts stores Napa caters to commercial accts. Most of the clerks are older and understand paint and body supplies, etc.Would expect that at AutoZone or advance! Alvada is near Findlay, couldn't place it used to stop at the Pilot there. I agree about two tone Daytons with chrome Mack hubcaps or bearing caps on early Macks!

  20. T,Grrrl, no completely honest person would ever be in a position to run for any major political office period! It's been the lesser of two evils as long as I can remember! Interesting that "working" people for many years were traditionally democrats, at some point that changed, never saw it coming! On the more pleasant(mostly) subject of false hooks I suspect most of us have had them, not everyone will admit it! I had a driver come up to me once and ask directions as I was under a trailer, but before I heard the "snap" and rocked the trailer! I finished the hookup and pulled right out from under the trailer! Fortunately it was empty so I could easily crank down the dollies an d get back under! After that I developed the habit of crawling  under and making sure the bar was across behind the kingpin! Both candidates are equally dishonest, and self serving but trump is impulsive like a three year old, and could press that " red button" without thinking thru the consequences! Clinton is cunning and would realize that her and her family could die along the rest of us in a nuclear explosion, and is self serving enough to only press the button as a last resort!  on the subject of the pipeline, we were screwing the native people long before slavery, and they have a long memory! I had a load of sheepskins that took me across Pine Ridge reservation and it is one of the most desolate places I've ever seen!

  21. Teamster Grrrl, my best friend and trucking agent when I was an o/o had an old " Twinkie truck" A road commander white (road commode) was a single axle ex Hostess bakery truck. 250Cummins,10spd r.r.Was probably over specd for most bakery loads.

Thanks for the reply teamster Grrrl! Thought it was a Hostess truck, was from Youngstown Oh area, maybe one of the other big bakery companies, was definitely a bakery truck, He referred to it jokingly as a "Twinkie truck" was definitely a Road commander were they built in the 60's? The reason I said 70s was I thought they weren't built til the 70s.

    3. TeamsterGrrrl

      TeamsterGrrrl

There we're 2 different RCs. The first was just a new name for the boxy 7000 series cabover built in the early 70s. The second was the rounded cab that came out in the late 70s and was shared with the Road Boss conventional and Expeditor low tilt. After Volvo took over in the early 80s the "Road" names disappeared and they were just called Volvos.

  23. The 237 maxidyne when it debuted in 65 I think was argueably the biggest breakthrough in diesel engine technology at the time.It was a turbocharged " high torque rise " engine with a 5 or 6 speed triple countershaft tranny to handle the torque.I'm not an engineer, but I know how they pull! You wind the thing  to 2100, as you pull you can let it drop to 1200 before shifting. On your Cummins or Detroit of that era you have to shift at 15 or 1600,If you lugged it to 1200 it would overheat ,the Cummins often warped or cracked a head! Hence the need for a pyrometer. The first time you drive one and don't let it " drop" it won't shift without grinding, but once you get used to it you're "golden"

  24. The first time I drove a B I was 6'2"  and 170,close but no problem! Now I'm 180, wonder if it makes a difference? He must be a good friend if you let him drive your B!

    1. Freightrain

      Freightrain

He was 6'-1, 320# when we tried to fit him in.  He is down to 280# and slowly working to get even lower.  I'm only 5-10 and 170# so I fit well.  I can stretch my left leg out under the dash and drive comfortably.

Ya, I've known him for a very long time.  He would have caught on to the two sticks with a little time behind the wheel.   I don't have many people I know that could even come close to getting it moving, let alone drive it down the street.  I'd like to see/hear it go down the road, but no one can drive it?

  25. The old Chevy medium duty on the end looks like it has possibilities!
