Did you see the silly looking diamond t?that thing had a 4cylinder  jeep engine in front of the main engine! Only kicked it in when pulling a hill or needed xtra power!

  7. Well the fire truck I posted about being stolen in the Tampa Bay area has been recovered! According to the news bulletin, the mentally deficient thief paid 300 dollars to have another man's 56 Ford fire truck towed to the thiefs location and then in another slick move posted it on E Bay! There being so many 56 Ford fire trucks on the market it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb! Lol

fxfymn on the subject of safety,I've been watching our local garbage contractor when they pick up our trash, and the helper always rides on the back step of the packer as the driver backs up to the stop or when driving to the next stop. I'd be willing to bet that this is against company policy, but if the helper had to walk up to the cab and back from the cab to the garbage cans at every stop he would wear himself out and add a significant amount of time to the run! This practice would be noticeably safer if the truck had a some sort of a cage on the rear of the truck that the helper could lean into so if the driver hit a bump the helper wouldn't be thrown off! I suspect that the reason this device isn't on the trucks is it would encourage the helper to do something he's not allowed to do but everyone including mgmt knows he does! Sorta a "catch 22" deal! I also wonder if the helper is denied workmans  comp. If he's injured when riding on the back of the truck! Can you members in the refuse business give me any input?

  8. Congratulations! Your guys did it! Betcha can't buy a hotel room in " The Windy"😯

Thanks Billy. Yeah he is devastated about it. He put a lot of time and money into it.

Its funny, you sorta become "mates" with your truck, or car, you give them names etcetera.

  10. Sr eHvy gunner, you were worried about investing,I would recommend one of Dave Ramsey's financial advice books. He advocates "cash only" except for your home. You are already following his advice with older paid for cars and tks. Many American adults can't write a check for 500.bucks.Mostly due to credit card debt and general irresponsibility.Sam's club has his books Did. You see the pictures of the bus that ran into a telephone pole in Shop trucks area? Hwy 99 InCal. The old Grapevine.Bad crash should be in your local paper.

Swishy a B model dump truck I once drove was built from a single axle road tractor. We were dumping from a paved street into empty house pads. The tag was in the back, and it was slightly uphill so you cranked the thing wide open in  reverse, ran thru the triplex and the second the drive left the pavement you dumped the tag or you'd get stuck in the sugar sand! My buddy also drove it but he would dump the tag too late and get stuck a lot.The loader operator used  to get pissed of because he would have to drive a half mile to push him out. On the subject of the pushrods I cut one off 3 times and it was still too short!

  11. Mike, while you are looking for a proper horn button if you can find the horn relay you could run a separate wire off it to something hot under the dash with an accessory  fuse to one of those old fashioned horn buttons they are still sold in parts stores.Just find a place to mount it that's accessible but doesn't screw up the dash!

Underdog, on the subject of our once proud steel industry,my best friend is from Warren oh and were talking the other night about Copperweld, U.S. Steels Homestead Works is another tragedy,The largest Bessemer converter in the world now houses a Dave and Busters restaurant and a couple other minimum wage type facilities! The o/o hauling " untarped slab" from Homestead to Clairton works (less than 20 mi) were earning 1000.00 a day with old day cab R models!  The problem as I see it is not unions,it's union greed the reason we needed unions in the first place was corporate greed!

  12. Topo, does your military tractor have an Allison? Most of the deuce and a halfs, and five ton tractors in the military did. They seemed to have a pause between shifts, then a big clunk as the thing caught caught!we're very reliable but got terrible fuel economy so the otr companies didn't use them. Is  it a multi fuel?,always liked the way they looked. Some guy near me in Florida was using one for a daily driver! Was for sale on Craig's list.

    1. topo

      topo

BillyT  no Allison .It had a multi fuel till I lost a piston I repowered with a ENDT 673 P I have the 5 speed direct when loaded you can use the transfer case to split shift

  13. Hvy gunner,I wonder what rpm that 453 is at in od at 55mph? 2cycle Detroit s weren't famous for fuel economy. My dad had a46chevy  flatbed he hauled scrap cars with. I had a 47Chevy fleetline Tudor.his engine blew up and he took the engine out of my car and put it in his truck while I was at school! I got off the school bus and the hood was crooked on my car! I lifted the hood and it fell on the ground. What could I say?I was 14 and he needed the truck to feed me!It was the only Chevy flatbed with a chrome valve cover!

What a small world! My milkman drove a Divco, and I hauled Grumman mail jeeps out of Williamsport Pa in the late 80s.

  15. Hobert 62, Don't forget to remove the visegrips lol True story...I hung a set of aftermarket duals on my welding truck, was on the last hanger and too lazy to get a half inch wrench,so I used a vise grip. Two years later I'm under the truck doing something and there's the vise grip! A little rusty, but still hanging there!

  16. General Ike you're pretty close to Orlando,It just occurred to me after the Pulse nightclub situation that the Westboro Baptist Church didn't fly the entire congregation there to celebrate, as they

General Ike sorry about the incomplete post what I  was trying to say was those Westbrook Baptist pos used to demonstrate at the funeral s of our deceased vets because they said the U.S. supported gay rights, so thought the Pulse situation would make them happy! I guess the less said the better, let's get back to trucks!

  17. Gray hair!,Don't know where to start! Ok flood ins. I'm 6 miles from the Gulf coast and nowhere near a major body of water.was declared a flood zone Feb of 2012 ,got flood ins. Rained 16 days non-stop,tropical storm Debbie hit June 28.Had 2ft of water in house 2 wks, Next door neighbor had 4ft.Rest of neighborhood dry.Fema pays for everything that gets wet @todays cost  minus depreciation. Paid to repair the house and all contents. 435.00 per yr! If  you're in a flood zone GET FLOOD INS! The ins cost is going up due to Fl not having any major storms in a long while,so we are paying for Katrina, Sandy, and Baton Rouge etc. You're right about tort legislation and attorneys! A tort is the non contractual obligation of a person or business to protect their customers, neighbors, and damn near anyone else from danger or personal injury.I looked it up! Without tort legislation 2/3 of today's attorneys would be out of business! Criminals have sued the homeowners when they broke in their house for things like cuts and bruises on the broken glass and falls (because the house was cluttered)And won! Unreal! My favorite Platters tune was "only you" but

If  you like the Platters download "Memories of El Monte" by Clive Duncan and the Penguins, another west coast group if you haven't already, you'll recognize a few tunes!

  18. R686'rt,Gray hair is talking yearly premium! My yearly premium is around 500.00 now.

That may be the case in yall's area. In my area that is a monthly rate.

  19. Rowdy,,I got the Avalanche mixed up with the Aztek! You're right the Aztek is arguably the ugliest vehicle built...Ever! Also as you said, today's youngsters aren't all hopeless! I was heading for the waffle house in McDonough Ga when I realized I turned the wrong way on the ramp! So I made a u turn on the two lane and got stuck in the wet grass on the shoulder, with a 53 ft dry van! Blocked the whole road! I had visions of a 200.00 tow job when a kid about 19 and his girlfriend pull up in a brand new Dodge 1500 4wd he pulls up in front of me and throws a chain on the ground! I said "you're liable to burn up your tranny guy" " nah she'll do it"!  He says ...and it did! We both got to the Waffle House and he wouldn't even let me buy them dinner! But who else but a certifiable red neck engineer carries a 20 ft log chain in their brand new pickup?😁

  21. Happy birthday Tozzi! Mack pro, here in Hernando County Florida, we have some clouds on and off over the sun! I couldn't find any viewing glasses, people are buying them and scalping the price! I made a cardboard box "viewer" it gives  you a tiny picture on the inside of the box without hurting your eyes! My 12  year old grandson is all fired up about the eclipse! His 10 year old sister isn't as interested!, they got the day off school to look at the eclipse!

  22. 66DC75, on the subject of single axle tractors, before the steel industry went offshore in the early 80's, there were guys hauling big coils out of Homestead, and the other Pittsburgh mills with single axle gas jobs and 2 or 3 axle spread trailers. One Chevy I knew of was a 427 with a 5 and 2 speed axle.A tractor like this weighed 10000 lb or less and could legally haul a 50000 single coil! Any single over 40000 lb was automatically a permit load anyway. Most of these ran local, mill to mill and sometimes as far as Cleveland. These loads paid outrageously high rates, and many otr drivers in their high dollar Pete's and KW's were unaware of what these dudes were earning!,and made fun of their cheap little gas jobs that only lasted 100000miles! Of course they just took the abuse and went to the bank!!

  23. Gray hair, I'm looking at a video of the Corpus Christi coast the weather channel guy says it's getting worse! I'm glad your folks evacuated! I was thru new Orleans after Katrina and saw Homestead and Cutler ridge a couple days after Andrew, you have to see a hurricanes aftermath to believe the power  of wind and water!

  24. Ksb, not surprising UPS would try drones! a UPS supervisor once told me that their benchmark for a delivery driver was that they should park the truck, and complete the pickup or delivery and be back in the truck before their shoulder harness stopped swinging!
