  1. only if I get caught by a sudden red light do I push in the clutch and pull it out of gear. Reason is the speed is dropping so fast that 1) no use to find a lower gear as your about to come to a full stop. 2) if you don't get it out of gear you will stall the engine out. If someone cuts me off like an asshole....... I push them thru the intersection and keep going.....I don't have time for games
  2. Saw this red r model on I80 and here is Tanzillo number 20.
  3. When did they go to plastic? I know the Mack hood script on r models were metal but are now plastic....
  4. Yea PJ sold it, guy painted it blue, then he sold it soon after. I was at that same show....think I had a pic of it as well. I think it was a 350 with a 2060 trans. . Not sure as PJ had about 3 trucks at the time.
  5. I have see 100% Mack built trucks have gold dog on the hood and doors only. never seen gold Headlight rings or the antenna mount....early maxidynes were painted gold until the epa stopped them....some macks even had gold dogs on the mirrors. Not sure if the mirrors were a personal touch? only seen a handful of mirrors with gold dogs.If I recall the gold dogs on the mirrors were on fire trucks I had seen?
  6. we went a few years back. It was a great show. wanted to do it this year but dident know anyone was going. Its a good weekend event. just about every big MFG is there... thanks for the pics. Girls and Machines go hand and hand
  7. this is very true. Chicago Mack has 95% Volvos out front all white fleet spec. local mack dealer was recently bought out by a no name dealer. only see mostly off breed trucks in for service. even when I was running the road most of the macks in the dealer lots looked like repair work on used trucks. the fence had new Volvos with maybe 3 or 4 macks in the mix....
  8. I saw a few years back someone turned a electronic cat into mechanical injection. Do these new diesels still have a auxiliary gear to run an air compressor that is timed to 1/2 the engine rpm? Was thinking a simple adapter for a injection pump and sleeves for an mecanical injector and 99% of these engine issues would be solved. Not interested in discussing emissions hurdles. Just how hard would it be?
  9. Models and model makers just keep getting better.....those are some great looking trucks...
  10. Mc MasterCarr For the win....they are local to me as well..
  11. Ups has them or had them I remember seeing a lot of leaning trailers when I worked the night shift... When they work right there great. When they fail it's a problem....I do like how they left a manual option for them for when they do brake...
  12. It seams Mack has always had financial issues.... Why was this when it was such an icon and found on every construction site in America. The B and R models seam to surpass all other makes when it came to build quality. Not to mention build numbers. Add to that the maxidyne performance you would think Mack would have been #1 and in the black for most of the 50's, 60's and into the 70's? One again Great info kscarbel!
  13. I saw him in the yard today when I was picking up their 320 excavator. They did some nice work to get it back into shape. Its sister truck is still owned by Tanzillo. We just had it painted black and silver a few weeks back.
  14. When I ran out west I would hit them hills with speed then kick on the engine fan on and run up and over without overheating. Keep your revs up so the coolant is flowing...
  15. What was the last year the E9 was offered in a CL And what was the last year it was offered in a boat? If I recall those were the only state side options for an E9 at the end of its run. I also recall that the Aussie had them a few years longer then us? I figured it was put Down because of low sales of the CL Mackdaddy.....The comment about Mack out of heavy haul.. Very few heavy haul lowboy trucks here in Chicago are Mack. Everyone went to Paccar with their options of 500+ HP engines after the superliners ended. A few people bought the CL but i can count them on one hand. Sure we have plenty of tandem axel Mack's pulling 2 or 3 axel lowboys but all the big stuff is on the back of off breed trucks now. Kinda sad as I do feel Mack gave that market away. The Titan, last I checked was over priced for a day cab and lacked options for the over the road heavy haul guy. You can't get a sleeper on them? Big issue if your stuck out on I-80 for a few days waiting for a permit or wind to calm down.... I was at the con expo when the Titan was first put on show and I asked the Mack rep why no sleeper option... He had a hard time trying to cover that and agreed it was not smart. His line was it will be offered soon....that was how long ago tho? Just my .02
  16. Agreed. I spoke to some friends this week about the new logo and one simply said "it sucks" the other commented that " it's bland and has a lifeless cold look to it." the 5 color now that is an american classic logo that never gets old. I cant count How many 5 color logo have I seen proped up in a truck garage or persons home garage wall just put up on display because it looked cool...what about the red white and blue Mack logo with the stars in the letters? Was that for the 1976 year? I always liked that logo as well..
  17. Well put ! Build a true Mack and die hard Mack guys will love it. Try to disguise a Volvo as a Mack and it gets called out. Pretty simple to see what's going on with the Volvo - Mack connection. I understand it's a new economy and things need to be more integrated but you can't just take a product and slap different badges on it.....remember GM in the 80's they slapped a different emblem on their cars and called them somethi g diffrent....then they had the balls to charge more for the same car. How did that work out? And you are right that if Volvo would listen to people they might gain more Mack customers that would praise both Volvo and Mack. The only thing I hope for with the current path Mack is on is that Volvo would let the mack design team back at the helm of their product or sell off Mack to a new owner that respects the brand and knows the customer better. Sadly most new school truckers won't even consider a new Mack and I feel this is what has to change first by just building trucks that people want.
  18. I'm at 12'4" and hit branches on back roads. The RD I drive at work is about 10' and don't have a problem.....more importantly....what's the lowest bridge in your aera? Here in Chicago it's easy to find a 11'4" bridge....
  19. Good point Fxfymn....when I see Cadillac I think of the chevron symbol, Chevy the bow tie, ford the oval...etc... They all may have slightly changed font or font size but the basics stayed through all those years.I think the new mack logo lacks tradition. It's bland and cold compared to other Mack logos of the past. I dident like the old logo much either but it was somwhat withing tradition. Personally I like the older bulldog logo from the 70's. It was simple, classic and colorful.
  20. That's what I figured with maintance issues...if you have a bad piston or rocker much more easy to pull down one hole than 2 I think some locomotive diesels have individual heads as well for ease of maintance
  21. I wonder why scania went with single heads vs the dual like on the Mack's,....was one considered better than the other?
  22. Kscarbel.... Just wondering , you seem like you really follow truck manufacturing history. Do you specialize in Mack's history or do you follow all brands? Is your vast knowledge of truck history from your career in the field or more of a hobby?
  23. Great info once again.....I think we should sticky some of these threads on these important topics.....
  24. Priceless....but pretty much correct..
  25. I haven't heard anything about delet kits. I know people with cummins can find them... Big issue I see is the EPA cracked down on some of the diesel tuners that were advertising delete kits. Lots of these ma and pa company's stay quiet now about them....
