Car seats - My kids were born in 1980, 1981 ans 1984.  Only the last one had to have a car seat when born.  Safety standards were minimal in any of the seats available at that time.  Their use was not mandatory nationwide until later.

Dad's 1969 New Yorker was the first car we had that had seat belts in the back seat.  My Uncle had a 1970 Chevy C-10 with a cap and brought his five kids up to NY from TX with 4 of them riding in the back.  The number of times I rode in the back of an open pickup is too many to count.  I also used to ride on the tailboard of speeding fire engines.

I have cut seat belts off of plenty of dead bodies in wrecks and have personally walked away from more than one wreck where I was not wearing one.  Worked a wreck one time where a Chevette hit a tree as wide as the car at high speed.  The least injured of the five people inside was the one not belted in, who was ejected.

Stat's favor wearing seatbelts by a huge degree. Having run a tow truck, I would agree with the stat's. For every rule, you can find an exception, that doesn't negate the rule.

I rode around in the bed of pick-ups, it wasn't illegal, rode from Mass to Maine several times. Riding in trailers was. 

In High school we had I think 10-12 in the bed, may be it was less, but not much.

i did the same thing around 73 mass to maine,,,i had pretty long hair then,,,didnt figure on hair was full of knots,when we arrived,,,,lol

as geoff said seat belts are a blessing in (most) cases,,,,49 years in big rigs,,,i never wore the seatbelts untill they started installing those annoying noises in all the dashboards

We used to ride in the back of my dad's pickup all the time. We'd ride in the back from Cumberland, VA. to Farmville when we went to see my grandparents on my mother's side. My grandparents on my father's side lived right across the field. But that's all we had, my dad bought a brand new '66 Chevrolet pickup, blue with a white top, 292 engine, 3 spd. on the column. He had a '58 Chevrolet pickup before that, that's the first vehicle he had that I actually remember. And there was 6 of us, I have 2 brothers and a sister, and everywhere we went we went in that pickup. I do remember him borrowing my grandfather's car a time or 2, he had a '60 Chevrolet, 2 door, 283 with a powerglide. I remember a lot of stuff. 

Then when my mother got a part time job she bought our first car, a '65 Impala, 2 door, 327, powerglide transmission. Nice car. The first brand new car she bought was so expensive I couldn't believe it. $4100 I believe, and around $3000 was typical for a new car then. 1971 Impala, 4 door, 400 small block. That was a really nice car too.

My dad had a '74 GMC pickup and it had a little pouch on the door, and he always had a pack of cigarettes in it. I'd sneak out at night and smoke a couple of them.

Father had a '56 ford F100 which he put a large plastic liner/filled it with water and neighbor hood kids got in the back as he drove around town with his "Mobile swimming pool" , and we didn't have life preservers on.

It wasnt elmers glue... It was the paste in art class... Much sweeter.  Just sayin'

Friend of mine had a saying, when things started to go hard "This is a job for library paste" that seamed to fit whatever the problem was at the time!

When I was about eight a bunch of us hanging around one kid had a German shepherd his mother gave him a biscuit to give to the dog. Of course we all had to take a bite to see what it tasted like a sucker was horrible. I could still remember just what it tasted like. I’m sure we’re not the only fools that did this.

My parents had a 39 Chevy business coupe, NO back seat.. I can remember standing up in back behind the seat looking over their shoulders..

You know, Brocky that sounds familiar I know I have done that somewhere along the line I do remember writing a neighbors 54 Ford convertible with the top down going to a drive-in movie with neighbor kid. I don’t know what year that was, but the car was not that old at the time.
