Aluminium polishing.
Vladislav replied to Timmyb's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
Guys, my trouble with that tank was in a different ball park. It was never polished before indeed. And lots of pitting as a follow. Starting from that point I ordered one of my boys with a grinder to sand all off. He started from 120 grit but had to step back to 60. Spent no less than 3 days getting tonns of alu dust until the most of cavits were gone. Probably sanded off something like 0.3 - 0.5 mm of the wall thickness. Than he followed with all sand papers step by step. That time I went for a trip for a couple of weeks. Found him still sanding when back home! Finally he ended up with 2000 paper having almost no scratches, pitting and so on. But when it was a time to polish that aluminium showed its character. I couldn't do anything with it by common "green" stuff and applied the mentioned above 3M paste I had very good results on Alcoa wheels. It turned out as good as you can see. Nothing better. You have to apply the paste with a piece of cloth. You start rubbing it and found it gets brighter. But the paste becomes to be a black stuff at the same time. So you have to remove all the rest of it until it dries. If you dont it sticks to the surface and the only way to remove is 2000 sand paper. Just a nightmare. Sure I made research on the materials to polish aluminium which are in stock overhere and found nothing to work better so far. Going to try order something else from the States or other country. But there are difficulties with importing liquid stuff. -

Aluminium polishing.

Timmy, it looks outstanding Observing what you have done with the truck on my 'puter I'm really impressed. Of all the stuff I could find locally the best result was achieved with 3M Marine Polisher, and I'm not satisfied with it. Not bright as hell and difficult to work with. Hand polishing is the only way. So I will try to put my hands on something more successful. -
Sure seems a lot of the "old timers" are gone:
Vladislav replied to Rob's topic in Site Related Topics
Some months back Barry had to update the site sofware and that forced changes in the interface. Many daily visitors were gone after that moment. Or got scarce. I suppose that was not mostly a matter of the change itself. Probably many got upset of being here for a long time. So additionas troubles dealing with the site made a kind of hit. Previousely that day you usually could see "collapse" in the "members online" count at the top of the page. Facebook makes its work either. -
Close to a perfect ride.

Some folks overhere use home-made devices. Actually it's like a thin tube oil goes through by gravity and fall onto a frypan (usually an actual kitchen frypan!) All that is put into some housing, a kind of big pipe installed vertically with a pipe at the top for smoke. What I saw was a terrible view of really dark black smoke from the exhaust. A lot of heat was produced though. One guy who used it one got fire. He had some ventil in the oil supply pipe to get correct amount of it when burning. He put a bit more than needed and didn't do observation as he used to every half an hour. The oil got over the edge of the pan and leaked outside spreading flame. He had his device in the foundation with concrete floor and walls so no loss excepting smoke, big black oil spot and emotions. Seeing such stuff I lost any intend building one for my shop. Some other guys use factory built units and they work good. My need is a boiler since I have water pipes and radiators. Those I checked out some years back were expensive (starting from $3000) and also required an air compressor which was not included.

That's damn unbelivable! On my side I can not tel it's better in my own country. And too probably will not be in the distant future. But I too wish you Americans to get things correct way soon. One thing I always sure - working people must not be a cow only milked to feed others.

Thanks for the explanations, guys. I remember we talked about that setup in the past. BTW pretty interesting style, nothing like that overhere to be seen.

Sad story about your friend's wife. Maybe someone else on here will put more info on the truck.

Swapping an e7 into rd600 with e6 4 valve
Vladislav replied to rd600's topic in Engine and Transmission
At least the oil pan gasket is the same. -
Might be not a hell of a job. On the other hand start from relating the width of the frames. CH has it different than RW. You will need the axles with equalizer levers and to-rail brackets, air bag suppor crosst tubes and also two rear frame crossmembers to put on your truck. Looking the crossmembers and equalizer brackets you might see spacer plates which compensate the difference between different frames. If you can not use the crossmembers in your frame or if the distance (width) between the lever brackets is less than on the CH the deal might get failed. Swapping just the pair of diffs seems much easier and too probably trouble-free about the job. Vlad

I like two big Mack trucks no less than the holstein. Wonder what did they have as a tail?

I would grab that one and put on my second R's chassis if it's closer or easier to ship. On the other hand it seems attractive as such a crasy deal to do. Easier to go - less fun

I have T2090 with 5.02's in my R688 with E6-350. You can cruise 60 mph (100kmh) with no trouble. The top speed I could achieve was 125 by speedo and 119 kmh by GPS at the same time. Unfortunately my tacho is dead so no ideas on the revs. I just noticed the engine didn't increase revs at some point so I supposed it was governed that way. Forgot to add, I rode 11R24.5's.

Paul mate, My 6 cylinder animal is called Econodyne!! And it can't boast of its total health. During multiple overhauls and modifications it lost some minor parts like for example a puff limiter. The turbo is of an unknown source either. Injectors should go on a bench and I suppose with the pump as a company. Describing its function I can state it smokes like a burning hell when you have your revs low. I hope I will go with just 5 speeds or maybe only 4 as I said in the post above. Not sure I will almost go off with T2090 9 speed. But currently I have neither good ones and the overdrive of 0.71 I would prefere faster. Can swap the rears though. The current 9 speed tranny would probably need a set of high range gear wheels and a set of sliding clutches to mate them. I doubt they are cheap new ones and doubt on easiness finding such parts used. I might trace a used box with some other issue locally to boil a can of soup of all the old iron. Let's see. It just looks attractive to me though to put another tranny in the truck to keep it running while tinkering with parts. Vlad

G'day Roland, My T2090 has 5 low range gears and 5 high ones. With 5th low (5th) and 1st high (6th) of the similar ratio. So Mack just doesn't count one of them calling the tranny 9 speed. When bobtailing I start on a flat ground I just use the lowest gear of the High range (Mack calls it 5th). Than switch further every step having them 5 at all. Looking the transmission chat that gear I use for a start has 2.79 ratio. It's fast a lil bit and I go low range when uphill or crowling in tight spots. If we look for Mack 5 speed T2050 tranny (and also 6,7,8 speed T2060,T2070, T2080 not considering their crowl gears) the 2nd speed is 3.05. So having one of those units I might drive it as a four speed box. Having the lower 1st gear (5.24) for narrow starts. The current box I have I can't drive as a hot rod no matter I really want it or not. The shift clutches seem so worn so you sometimes spend 5-10 seconds putting a next gear in. You loose the throttle, get a gear off, wait for a moment than start to put it in. It grinds so you wait a lil bit more. And if you didn't get it in it grinds again having engine revs now low. So you hit gas and try again. If not (again!) you can try to level the shaft speeds playing with gas and keeping your feel on the shift lever for a chance. As the previous owner said to me when showed that process, if you can't put it in better stop on a shoulder and start from the 1st. Just too many drivers went through the truck and the most trucks they drove before and after had synchro gearboxes. Interesting to see the movie you driving. Difficult to get a hard feeling but it seems my ride is much softer. At least when you go on pavement the cab doesn't do catches. I sure have way longer wheelbase. Have a good time, Vlad

Is the reason of the sign the people dislike air brake exhaust? If so they would hear crash sounds sometimes. And probably syrenes.
