  1. Even has a steering knob so you could free up an extra hand...
  2. Thats such a cool lookin turbocharger! I miss when they used to be mechanical marvels that people took pride on having. Now they're tucked away and a pain. More of an emissions component than anything. And best yet if you changed your oil and didn't abuse them they lasted the life of the engine. Foreign concept I know
  3. If one gets into your house then a mandatory vacation will be in order. You wouldn't be able to sleep with the racket they make Ive never seen anything eat one, not even our chickens will touch em.
  4. I really hate to add to the off topic fire but I don't even use our chainsaw anymore. Milwaukee Sawzall is the way to go. No bar oil, no gas just plug it in and go. New blades are cheeper than new bars and bar oil. Of course there aren't any big tree's here in Kansas, a good axeman should be able to clear the county in an hour.
  5. To me those look more like a marker light of sorts than a headlight, and why would they be all the way back by the radiator? Are these lights even electric or are they acetylene or some sort of oil lamp?
  6. No pictures at the moment but I have a low quality video of it firing up: And that makes sense about them being painted red. Wonder if that was done at the IH assembly or the Cat factory.
  7. Ours is a 1970 and its painted Red. Someone somewhere told me that the last 1693's that went into trucks were painted red but I couldn't tell you if that's right or not.
  8. Purple people eaters they called em. Seemed like real good engines I wonder what could have happened. They had a pretty large engine plant for them. Our gleaner combine's had allis engines and we never had any problems with em, plenty of power for an L2.
  9. Our e6 350 could whip our cat 1693. The reason they couldn't have Jake breaks is because they were dual overhead cam with the cams acting on the valves with no rocker arms. Fuel consumption is terrible but they're reliable and torque monsters. Some form post said that no one still runs 1693's anymore but our's is still used every year for harvest.
  10. Nah. We have a 1693 in a IH transtar and a 3208 in an RV but have never done anything major to them. Adept Ape on YouTube the is the cat guy I learned all my information from
  11. 1978-1982 was the production years and I think they switched to chassis mounted intercoolers in 1980 or 1981?? (Not sure) The intake manifold inlet was pointing straight up instead of angled a bit for an intercooler but all mack straight 6's manifold inlets point straight up so forget that.
  12. The tractor above sold for a good price for only having 300 hours. Seems to me like the olds stuffs values keep going up while the new stuffs going down.
  13. It has the same stroke as a 3406 cat but a tad smaller bore. Doesn't look like it has a spacer plate like the cats. I'd say it wouldn't make as good of power with the intake setup the way it is, probably were developing a tip turbine intercooler system as to why the intake is pointing straight up.
  14. Thats an average speed of about 10mph which I can see it being a dump truck and all but I'd like to see 30-40 for an on highway truck. As long as the motor looks pretty clean (the seals aren't blown out) and its not burning too much oil I wouldn't be concerned. We always dumped the airbags whenever we would unload with our Mack, but that was because they leaked a bit and when sitting in line with lots on stop and go break application the air compressor couldn't keep up at idle. Dad got stuck on the scales one time and had to wait for the air to come back up. What would be another reason to dump the airbags when dumping? I wouldn't recommend shifting with the Jake brakes either. If you're in a hurry you're in the wrong rig.
  15. Is that the same pump that's used on the cat 3208? They look identical but I know cat prides themselves on having a self made injection system. Is the Mack pump a Bosch?
  16. Yep almost an exact copy beside a few modifications to the oil pump and different oil gallery routing. Its crazy to me that the engine chevy designed in 1929 lasted for so long with so many different versions. It's got to be one of the most produced car engine ever manufactured, Ive seen Russian and Chinese copies of it so Im sure there's more. Brazil didn't stop making them until the early 2000s with fuel injection and all the vortec stuff on it.
  17. There my favorite engine type for trucks. My first car was a 74 land cruiser with a straight 6 that didn't have hardly any power but so much torque and it could be lugged all the way down to idle without a sweat. In old chevy grain trucks that had the straight 6s it was amazing how those little engines could move so much especially after 50 years. Love the ford 300 inline 6 too
  18. Bottom end knock? If not it might not have hydraulic lifters, maybe since its a 2 ton its an industrial engine without em. Im just guessing here. Also wow $3,500. Granted I don't know the body condition but I remember our old farm trucks were the cheapest C10's you could find at an auction. They were cheep and disposable got beat up and parked. Might be worth fixing now with the prices of them
  19. I joined just about as that guy left so Ive never seen him active. The main Mh cabover guy with all the info and books on em, wish he were still around.
  20. Do they have an electric Def pump or do they use onboard air to pressurize it like the old systems? And oops I meant 7th injector, I don't know what I was thinking
  21. As far as I know you cannot buy from PAI directly. This web sight has all there stuff https://www.heavydutypros.com/cummins-engine-parts-engine-parts.aspx
  22. Volvo/mack I think uses cummins DPF components so you know one DPF system you know just about all of them. Detroits are a bit different but same basic concept. I have a basic understanding of cat's and cummins system but never worked on one. Do mack's use an 8th injector or do they use the engine injectors to inject fuel into the exhaust stroke?
  23. It seems internet forms just aren't as popular anymore. This forms my favorite so far and the community's the best and active. Smokstak used to be my favorite but all the forms are now either all politics or generator technical jargon. All the old iron people either died or stopped posting.
  24. Welcome to the form! We've got tons of info here about the old motors but we could use more stuff of the new emissions motors. What all do you work on with the emissions motors?
  25. Do you have a picture of that hump? I didn't know there was a difference in valve covers besides maybe an electrical terminal for the solenoid's. Maybe the 2 valve stamped steel covers had a hump but I can't say Ive seen a difference in the 4 valve cast aluminum covers. I know someone will know for sure.
