  1. Who makes the GAZ 66 4by4 ? Is that a pickup or a big truck? Do you get American "reality shows" in Moscow ? If so have you seen "Cuban Chrome"?

      Vladislav

Hi, GAZ-66 is a medium class military vehicle. It was produced from 70's to 90's at GAZ plant in Russia. v8 gasser COE, usually universal military body, van, or different equipment carrier. Might be equipped with mechanical winch. Sorry for the poor foto. I doubt there any American reality show are translated overhere. Some local ones could be catched by TV. Although they aren't my cup of tea. I don't watch TV at all. Just don't have antenna or a cable:)

  2. Hvy gunner, saw your post about the guy who passed off his cliff jumping injury as job related, reminded of a co-worker of mine.Monday mrng.1974 I'm pulling on to PA tpke.I see one of our tks.on shoulder.the guy is lying over the wheel.I go up his face is all red and he  Has a black eye! He's a little guy 150lbs 5' 6",his girl friends 200 lb husband caught them in bed,(2nd time!) We were both gonna deliver in pa,then go to Baltimore Md.for a load of Ford fiestas. He asked me if I'd load his cars,And he'd show me how to load the Fiestas. It was my 1st load of Fiestas and there was an xtra unit involved.I said sure.I would have done it anyway, but the (teachable moment) was helpful. So he drives 270mile to Baltimore, and 270 mi back to pgh with a ruptured spleen! Then he parks his tk. At our yard and goes to the hospital, tells the boss he fell off his trailer! He could have died! Must have been a heckuva girl !

Truck shop, that old hay haulin' Cabover reminded  me that the hay haulers of the central valley have some of the sweetest Cabover trucks in America! I call them "class 8 street rods" usually single axles with flatbed doubles,or a tandem flatbed straight truck with one or two trailers. All dressed up with chrome etc.Mostly older Mexican o/o take great pride in their equipment!

  3. The 237 maxidyne when it debuted in 65 I think was argueably the biggest breakthrough in diesel engine technology at the time.It was a turbocharged " high torque rise " engine with a 5 or 6 speed triple countershaft tranny to handle the torque.I'm not an engineer, but I know how they pull! You wind the thing  to 2100, as you pull you can let it drop to 1200 before shifting. On your Cummins or Detroit of that era you have to shift at 15 or 1600,If you lugged it to 1200 it would overheat ,the Cummins often warped or cracked a head! Hence the need for a pyrometer. The first time you drive one and don't let it " drop" it won't shift without grinding, but once you get used to it you're "golden"

  4. It is said to be controlled by the"mob" wouldn't bet against it! Starting in the late 80's the landfills in NYC were full, At that time they were "exporting" bailed garbage to landfills in pretty rural areas of  E Ohio, and Va.One of our o/o  sold his "hotshot" rig and bought two "Large Car" Freightliners and 53ft alum. spread axles.A lot of guys bought high dollar "walking floor" trailers. Those burnt rigs are either walking floor or dumps, can't see enough of them to tell.I'd bet the biggest steak in Florida. Those guys "cut the rates" hence the burnt equip!! As soon as my friend and those who bought the walking floors in the 80's and 90's locked themselves into those big payments, the brokers "cut the rates" The walking floor guys were really screwed,as you contractors know they can only haul certain commodities! Predictably all they could do was haul Fast and heavy!!You Pa guys who are old  enough will remember Uncle Miltie shapp and "operation trashnet"In addition to the aforementioned problems, guys were hauling baled garbage in reefers, then hauling food without washing the trls. So my pal got busted, both rigs on I 80.Are ya' ready 90k gross, speeding of course, logbook that were a museum exhibit!! The fines were like the national debt! As if all that weren't enough the folks in the little towns where the garbage was going were pissed, began picketing the landfills(wouldn't you!).I was running across 80 every wk. To new England and the Bronx with insulation. There was at least one garbage wagon rolled over each trip!

  5. Happy birthday(a little late) I was a union car hauler before a union card became a way. To avoid a days work! What a small world,I used to haul steel coils  out of Homestead  works of Us steel (where the United steel workers were born out of the ashes of the Homestead riots in the1890's) to Gate 10 Lackawanna N.Y. US steel works! five years later the car hauling company's,had something called a half rate back haul.you picked a

The US is in a real mess I dont think Trump or Hillary are much good if Trump gets in it will be only because the opposition is crap , sorry Hilary you arent the right person for the job at all and Trump aint much better from what I know

You're dead right! They are both "at the trough" did I spell that right?( the receptacle a pig eats out of) I'm very much convinced that anyone who thinks either one cares about anyone but themselves,is very naive!

  7. Mrs mack Paul ,you mentioned the Hand built Hippo,Our freightliner was originally built by consolidated freightways mechanics in their Portland Oregon shop.they needed a short lightweight tractor that could pull longer trailers and haul more weight, hence the aluminum cab.this being the result of heavily enforced weight and length laws. The infamous DOT officers! I suspect they only wanted to get their cattle and freight hauled in Australia.

      BillyT

Lost my keyboard again! Do you have plug in coolers in your trucks like US drivers  have? Australia is a modern country, but your cities are a "ways" apart! Some otr drivers here have little charcoal grills they carry for a change from t.s. "swill"! I suppose you could do  a "Bear Gryll" Thing and roast some roadkill, time permitting.you have a Federal, must be the model that resembles a cross between a Diamond T and a GMC. Rode a school bus that looked like that. The 50's Federal used an International cab and their own front end, weren't many made, very unique grille assembly.

    4. mrsmackpaul

      mrsmackpaul

Yeah Billy long way between drinks out here so to speak

No plug in coolers and our truck stops are pretty lame by US standards we have stricter length and width laws than the US but we go a lot taller and are allowed higher axle loads

Speed limit on Road Trains is 90 km/h which must be about about 57 MPH the rest of the trucks B doubles and normal semis 100 km/h or 60 MPH

You cant really go any faster on a lot of the roads the tyres get hot and to many blow outs

heres a picture of my old Federal working if your interested

Did you see the silly looking diamond t?that thing had a 4cylinder  jeep engine in front of the main engine! Only kicked it in when pulling a hill or needed xtra power!

On the subject of Jay,what I like about him is he is interested in everything mechanical, not just socially acceptable high buck stuff, lambos,Ferraris etc.He has driven virtually everything on wheels! Steam tractors, that outrageous tank engined roadster and so on.I just received a window motor from rock auto.com,for a 93Camry. 32 bucks plus shipping.(The whole unit, incl.drive assembly) they give you a choice of name brand Dorman was mentioned,or el cheapo(which I bought) the thing worked perfectly and looked like the original. they list all the major big trucks,Mack,'s etc. But only  cover later models. The part I got was 80 bucks at auto zone .That photo of Heavy gunners hay field, makes me wanna sing God bless America! And they're burning our flag!

Napa of the name brand parts stores is the last place for the remaining few quality parts made.Of course because they cater to the commercial trade. I too fab.anything I need  to hold up. when I bought my elderly but like new Isuzu p.u it had a factory step bumper, all beat up and too large for the truck.a piece of 4"channel, the"bronze wrench" and  some 6011 wire took care of that!

Big dog,you aren't old enuf,( be glad) but a couple of us who were driving in the 70's remember The UPS diamond reo c.o.e.,day cabs.Wonder who got them? Would be kinda cool either as is,Or with a period correct box sleeper. Have been on a diamond reo kick for a  couple wks, since I missed that 86 tractor with the Deutz air cooled diesel, for 1800bucks.too late I find out how reliable they were, also how rare.On the Dayton wheel pin stripe issue,Can only recall seeing one, didn't like it.Much nicer with a dark color wheel( with little Mack hubcaps) and silver or white snap rings.Or w/o the caps.Just opinions everybody has different tastes.

  17. Brocky, that orange double bunk is about a 58 951 I think.Similar to BC Fry's legendary 12v71. You're familiar with that one right? Ran consistent triple digits in 1958 the whole length of pa,oh,in,etc. Got a ticket on the Pa t.p.90 mph.,loaded on an upgrade! Totaled it on the in.line.Put the engine in a new KW. If you aren't,Google BC Fry,Independence IA.

  18. bullhusk on the subject of tire repair,my dad used to work in an auto salvage yard in the40's. They hired old vagrant guys to do their truck tire repairs.this one fellow started beating on the ring with a sledge hammer, forgot to let out the air 1st,the ring blew off, took off both his arms!  You gotta know what you're doing on that type of tire!

  19. Beatngu,Does that wrecker have a working back end? Unless time or parking issues cause an immediate need to move it,you shouldn't give it away! Don't let the old I'm tired of looking at it thing cause you to make a big financial mistake!a lot of towing outfits need a backup wrecker, and have the facilities and skills to handle the welding and engine repairs.Just say'n

  22. Speaking of thugs in the wrong  line of work,a tanker driver told me he was delivering to the old Hunts point market in the Bronx and a dude with a can of Freon and a  hammer jumped on the back of his tank at a light.(looking for a lock to break)! The trucker behind  told him on his radio," you're not gonna believe this!"  for you construction guys that may wonder what I'm talking about,What the thief does is sprays Freon on the loop of the lock (to make it brittle) then smacks the lock with a 2 lb hammer! then opens the doors and throws out some product to sell on the street. There is a message concerning evolution here, but I'll leave it to the PhD's to interpret!

      BillyT

You must have to be athletic as hell to accomplish this, perhaps a career in sports would be called for! I actually saw a thief jump into the back of a reefer  while the driver was backing in at the old Acme warehouse in Philly.Threw 2 cases of tomatoes to his accomplice on the ground, but the guard ran them off.Amazing the level of effort some folks will go to to avoid a days work!

  23. Brocky, thanks for your response ! My 201 had a banjo style steering wheel, may have had a horn ring ,but was long gone by the time I got it! The nut was exposed on the wheel.Definitely had the lighter and clock. The lighter still worked in 66 when I got the truck!. it was a wrecker, had an old manly hand crank unit.Have some pictures, will try to send them. tragically, DT trucks became incrementally less deluxe, until their demise in 65.There were A few bright moments however, like B C Fry's thundering 12v71,475 h.p. 951,that  went out in a "blaze of glory " on the ohio/indiana line in1958  "My heroes have always been cowboys" So they have a show in Leesburg? I'm an hour and a half away maybe next year!
