lucky for them the wheelbase was long enough to fit a decent  third axle. moved many battery boxes from side by side to one on top of another to fit a ridiculous baby axle enough to meet the law requirements back then. narrow steer tires and hyd canvas (not a Richards system ).sign of the changing times .

I was born in 1945, in 1948 my mother was elected the township clerk with her office in the corner of our living room. The highway super was in and out all the time. By 1950 I was the "Mascot" for the highway dept. Always riding in their trucks and later operating them. From there on my life was always in the trucking industry.

Nice memory for sure..and an impossibility in today's day and age.

This claims to fit a delco 737-Z which is what the 269 takes.

But IIRC you are going 12 volt, so I'd be looking in the Leece Neville catalog for a 10 tooth clockwise rotation SAE#1 starter.

Last I looked they made some.

Check the two highlighted starters

Yep 737-Z.  Yes to 12 volts. Thanks for the chart. I was thinking about making a crank handle for it, but i have never hand cranked and engine like this. Do i need a knob to retard timing to hand Crank, then adjust after it starts ? If i do a hand crank, should i run a choke cable to the grill so i can choke it ?

Mine hand cranks so easy. The problems come when the gasoline evap's from the carb, then it takes a bit of hand cranking.

I set my points with a dwell meter and the timing with a strobe, it never has tried to kick-back when set like that.

It should have a hand choke and throttle. I give it a little throttle and set the choke depending on temp.

Starting for the 1st time after sitting for a long time, I draw fuel up with a syringe, but still takes some cranking either electric or hand to fill the carb.

Once it is full, it fires right off.
