  1. Just checked with "oldmacksrus.com" They list a '522' but not a '532' '522' is "11,000 or 12,000 lbs" (Thanks Tom)!!!! Packer
  2. Never heard of the port-a-power thing be fore - - - Great idea!!!! :=) Packer
  3. I have for years filled my new fuel filter with ATF instead of fuel. Smokes a bit but seems to keep injectors clean. Packer
  4. While driving "Ol' Number Eight" (Cummins 335), standard was a water pump and a set fo fan belts. The water pump was the weak link and could go any time, taking fan/drive belts with it. Of course tape, tools and electrical butt splices, pronged connectors, strippers, etc. Seemed most issues were electrical rather than mechanical. Packer
  5. Rob, Woman don't belch, fart or cuss So they got to nag, or they will explode!!! Packer
  6. In the not to distance past a small company was making and selling hot water fuel heaters. The system would use the coolant lines to add heat to the tanks via a S.S. tube that was 'L' shaped and inserted in the tanks. Companys were the biggest users in the cold areas like Wyoming. If one truck was kept warm at night, it would be started and then hooked to another truck and warmed the fuel and engine. Now you had two trucks running and soon 4, then 8, etc. At 35-40 below and a 30-40 mile wind, even with 50-50 fuel, diesel would jell with-out heat. Packer
  7. I worked for Mack in S.L.C. UT in the late 70's The issue I had with the two turbines was that if one shot craps, it took out the other one also. More money and more pieces floating around. Horse power was good. They ran like crazy. Packer
  8. The 18 speed goes from 4-Hi to 5-Hi (double overdrive) There are only about 12-13 useful gears buy the time you skip one or two here and there. The math doesn't add up but the old 'B' will get-R-none. !-Lo-Lo 1lo 1direct 1-hi 2-lo 2dir 2-hi 3lo 3dir 3-hi 4lo 4dr 4Hi 5Hi That's 14 gears and that's makeing every shift. Skip 1direct and you got 13. That'a about all you need. Course differant conditions may dictate something a little differant. Empty and bob-tail you can skip a couple more. Packer
  9. The engine is a Mack 401. And most any price would get it! Packer
  10. Go to oldmacksrus.com under links. More info there than you can stand! Endines, transmissions, cabs - - - Good stuff!!! Packer
  11. I've got a an engine out of a '59 B-421 that I drove 45 miles from where I bought it. Might be something we can work out. All togather and sitting in my back yard. Let me know. Packer
  12. Adjust the clutch at the shaft, NOT the linkage!! Messes up the angles and such, if the linkage is adjusted. Packer
  13. HK Thanks for the info!! I picked up some rims for 11.00 tires. The inside- the-flange measurement is 9 in. I assume that these are 8.25 inch wheels. I've mounted 11.00 X 22.5 tires on them and they work well. The 9.00 X 22.5 tires would never air up on these wheels. Way too much room to fill. The 7 inch wheel should work much better. Now all I have to do is find some! Dayton wheels in the Rockies are like hens' teeth - - - You've heard of them but never seen any!!! Packer
  14. Found some nice 9.00 X 22.5 tires to hold up my 'EF'. The plan was to change the old split-rim tube-type with tube-less tires of the same size. The ones I found are even steel radial. Here is the issue: The rims I have are for 11.00 X 22.5 tires and 'IF' (and that's a BIG if) I could get them mount, The sidewalls will be laying nearly flat to reach both sides fo the rim. The 11.00 X 22.5 rims measure 9 in. inside-to-iside. Here is the $64.00 question. Can I get Dayton rims that are 7 in inside? Daytons out here get you a funny look and a shake of the head, so I'm looking for some Eastern input to get me on the right track! (Or any where else, for that matter) Thanks Guys!!! Packer
  15. From what I remember, 85w GEAR lube is the same viscosity as 50w MOTOR oil. This is from a long way back - - - late 70's to early 80's. I.ve been wrong before - - - maybe some one can add to this. The only issue I ever saw that was VERY BAD was mixing mineral oil and gear lube. A very nasty goo and a bunch of shiny gear and bearing parts in the bottom. Seems the two oils do not mix! They turn to a tar-like substance and won't lube bearings or gears. Even draining the gear boxes then adding the other oil will leave the inside all black and sticky. Packer
  16. If you look close - - - that's the tube sticking out of the right tire on the upper-rear/outside. LOL I've got a 15,000 pound winch in the front on the trailer just so I can gather up my treasures!!! Paul, The body is as good as it looks! Most of the rust is right out where it can be seen - - - 'course, so are the bullet holes! This should be a bunch of fun! can't wait to get started!! Packer
  17. Just got my 'NEW' EF!!!!!!!!! Packer
  18. Distributar/Coil driven tach should work. May have to change the light bulb (6 or 12 volt) Packer
  19. Hey all Got my 'new' EF!!!!! EF 1D 2784 Any one with a year to fit the serial number?? I need to contact the Mack Museum when I get it home but would like to get the year just to keep my mind at ease. Andy, Get it in the book!!! Garth J Huff 1600 Hitching Post Dr. Green River, Wyoming 82935 Thanks guys!! Packer
  20. Any word yet??? I know - - - Nag, Nag, Nag Packer
  21. Looks like Berry has gone over to the dark side!!!!! Packer
  22. I've spent the last 13 years working on natural gas fuled engines. In most cases the starters are natural gas or air. I've had very good luck with TDI starters. They start on any compressed gas with max pressure of 150psi. One starter will crank a 1600 hp Cat 3606 or 3516 (1000hp) at 400 rpm. I've seen TDIs' crank 7700hp Cat turbines at 8000 rpm (geared up) These are non-lubricated starters and seem to last for ever. There should build an exact replacement for an IR, are cheaper to buy and seem to have better life. The TDI also have a 'Soft Start' that engages the drive pinion, then turns the starter. Savs a bunch on flywheels. Just a thought. Packer
  23. I had just bought a brand new 1974 KW in april of '74. (Paid $28,000.000 Fuel was 20 cents a gallon at the time. In October of '74 fuel went to $1.00 a gallon and you couldn't get all the fuel you wanted. The "Roadrunner" truck stop in Phoenix, AZ would give only 20 gals at a time. Swift Transportation had a bunch (6-8) of fender flappin' Pete's and a small yard in Southeast Phoenix. "Overdrive" Magizine called a national O/O strike and it did do some good. This is when the first 'fuel sur-charge' came about. But - - - Amtrac ran into a money issue and the Feds bailed the whole rail road industry out. We might want to think of getting rid of trucks and buying RR stock!!!! NOT!! Packer
  24. $3.82 in Podunk, CO Packer
  25. Nope! The Jake uses valves to operate, not cam lobes. Packer
