  1. freightrain,I don't know how old you are,but if Grayhair is reading this he is old enough to answer this question.in the 70's there was coast to coast team operation(probably reefer) running tag axle gas jobs Ford or Chevy ,with box sleepers. At 100k their mechanics would install a new "long block"engine. That was all you could get out of a gas engine with the lubricants of the day.Did the swap in a couple of hrs.Other than the atrocious mileage a gas engine got,the benefits were many!Low initial cost, light weight, with the 73280gross limit, low cost of parts etc. Does anyone remember what this company was called?

Hi BillyT.  I just turned 50 on Sunday(ugh).  Got plenty of gray hair though......

Can't say I know of the company you speak of.

  2. Freightrain, speaking of old "jimmys"in the70's there was a kid hauling steel with a longnose gmc v12 gasburner 20sp.Spicer.probably had less trouble pulling hills than finding gas stations!@4mpg! Running outta Pittsburgh,we mostly ran all the auto plants in your state, sometimes as far west as Chicago, and Detroit. By  The way ,what is your "home " drag strip?

freightrain,I drove a b61, 711 with a triplex that would do80mph@2100, obviously an overdrive. If you were to swap in a modern big block,454,427,455 etc. Into that chassis, they will all do 5000rpm,what would it top out at! Also I know the triplex would handle the torque but would it and the diff.handle the rpm?  It would be sacrilege to put a gas v8 into a restored B model, but I'm always thinking out of the box!

  3. General Ike you're pretty close to Orlando,It just occurred to me after the Pulse nightclub situation that the Westboro Baptist Church didn't fly the entire congregation there to celebrate, as they

General Ike sorry about the incomplete post what I  was trying to say was those Westbrook Baptist pos used to demonstrate at the funeral s of our deceased vets because they said the U.S. supported gay rights, so thought the Pulse situation would make them happy! I guess the less said the better, let's get back to trucks!

Lots of old Mack's on the island.  Like much of the Caribbean, the tax to purchase a new vehicle is tremendous (50% or more).  So there are ton's of old R models on the island.  Not so much classic cars.

  6. Gonna have to lengthen those shifters so the little guy can split his gears!

  7. Gray hair, I'm looking at a video of the Corpus Christi coast the weather channel guy says it's getting worse! I'm glad your folks evacuated! I was thru new Orleans after Katrina and saw Homestead and Cutler ridge a couple days after Andrew, you have to see a hurricanes aftermath to believe the power  of wind and water!

  8. Gray hair, wish you were my neighbor! Did you see my post on Jimmy deans comments concerning the desecration of our flag?He was from Midland I think. had one of his sausage biscuits for breakfast last wk! Glad u found a b model to restore. You are fortunate,to live in Texas where there there is  so much rust free antique "iron"! I can't count the potential  street rods and old tks I've seen in w.Texas! Speaking of street rods, Tommy ivo's nailhead t bucket used to turn 12sec. @127mph!wow! What fun with a near vertical steering column! My dad owned the local salvage yard when I was a kid .can't count how many nailhead Buick motors we scrapped! They never wore out, unlike the dynaflow tyranny behind them!.Ivo's four engine rail

Gray hair,I vaguely remember that thing about soda can size in N.Y.,was that to protect the citizens from large soda cans on the ground when not properly disposed of?to protect the kids  from large sodas? Or something about recycling? just don't buy the kids sodas, and put your cans in the trash,or recycle them. Duh! love Texas have been treated well there no matter what city I was in.

  9. Gray hair!,Don't know where to start! Ok flood ins. I'm 6 miles from the Gulf coast and nowhere near a major body of water.was declared a flood zone Feb of 2012 ,got flood ins. Rained 16 days non-stop,tropical storm Debbie hit June 28.Had 2ft of water in house 2 wks, Next door neighbor had 4ft.Rest of neighborhood dry.Fema pays for everything that gets wet @todays cost  minus depreciation. Paid to repair the house and all contents. 435.00 per yr! If  you're in a flood zone GET FLOOD INS! The ins cost is going up due to Fl not having any major storms in a long while,so we are paying for Katrina, Sandy, and Baton Rouge etc. You're right about tort legislation and attorneys! A tort is the non contractual obligation of a person or business to protect their customers, neighbors, and damn near anyone else from danger or personal injury.I looked it up! Without tort legislation 2/3 of today's attorneys would be out of business! Criminals have sued the homeowners when they broke in their house for things like cuts and bruises on the broken glass and falls (because the house was cluttered)And won! Unreal! My favorite Platters tune was "only you" but

Happy birthday DCR! Ever wonder how you got that old? I do every  day! I'm always amazed how cheap retired fire trucks go for! An 87 Ford f 700 with 16000mi 3208 cat With a straight 6speed from a local retirement community's volunteer dept listed at 8700$ admittedly a non purpose built c/c,but not broken in at that mileage! Wouldn't hazard a guess at what it sold for new!Almost certainly could be had for any reasonable offer!

  11. Happy birthday Tozzi! Mack pro, here in Hernando County Florida, we have some clouds on and off over the sun! I couldn't find any viewing glasses, people are buying them and scalping the price! I made a cardboard box "viewer" it gives  you a tiny picture on the inside of the box without hurting your eyes! My 12  year old grandson is all fired up about the eclipse! His 10 year old sister isn't as interested!, they got the day off school to look at the eclipse!

  12. Happy birthday, can't believe someone's older than me! 73

  13. Happy birthday(a little late) I was a union car hauler before a union card became a way. To avoid a days work! What a small world,I used to haul steel coils  out of Homestead  works of Us steel (where the United steel workers were born out of the ashes of the Homestead riots in the1890's) to Gate 10 Lackawanna N.Y. US steel works! five years later the car hauling company's,had something called a half rate back haul.you picked a

  14. Hobert 62, Don't forget to remove the visegrips lol True story...I hung a set of aftermarket duals on my welding truck, was on the last hanger and too lazy to get a half inch wrench,so I used a vise grip. Two years later I'm under the truck doing something and there's the vise grip! A little rusty, but still hanging there!

someone fixed rocker on an 82 r model at . work, this was 6-8 years later I'm under the truck, vise grips still on it where they welded the rocker on. needless to say it got exported afew years later with them still on

    3. BillyT

      BillyT

I think I "created a monster" with the vise grip thing!  I'm glad I'm not the only forgetful idiot around! If the R model gets "exported" to China the visegrips will feel right at home because Irwin appears to  have " bought the name" and is has offshored the manufacturing process. Predictable right?  Here's 2 facts from my " storehouse of useless information" some older drivers may remember the Suburu "Brat" the narrow unibody pickup with the cheap plastic seats behind the cab.Why would a company that builds quality vehicles put cheap seats in back?Because the seats converted a truck into a sport utility vehicle, lower import duty! I wonder if they included a " disclaimer" to not sit in them while the truck is moving? Same basic reason you see all those little import pickup cab and chassis in the ports. They put the beds on in the port.Is an incomplete vehicle till the bed is installed, lower duty!

    4. Maddog13407

      Maddog13407

I'm sure the R model was exported, was sold in the auction and the vise grips were 10 years old at the time so at least they were American made vise grips

  17. Hvy gunner, saw your post about the guy who passed off his cliff jumping injury as job related, reminded of a co-worker of mine.Monday mrng.1974 I'm pulling on to PA tpke.I see one of our tks.on shoulder.the guy is lying over the wheel.I go up his face is all red and he  Has a black eye! He's a little guy 150lbs 5' 6",his girl friends 200 lb husband caught them in bed,(2nd time!) We were both gonna deliver in pa,then go to Baltimore Md.for a load of Ford fiestas. He asked me if I'd load his cars,And he'd show me how to load the Fiestas. It was my 1st load of Fiestas and there was an xtra unit involved.I said sure.I would have done it anyway, but the (teachable moment) was helpful. So he drives 270mile to Baltimore, and 270 mi back to pgh with a ruptured spleen! Then he parks his tk. At our yard and goes to the hospital, tells the boss he fell off his trailer! He could have died! Must have been a heckuva girl !

Truck shop, that old hay haulin' Cabover reminded  me that the hay haulers of the central valley have some of the sweetest Cabover trucks in America! I call them "class 8 street rods" usually single axles with flatbed doubles,or a tandem flatbed straight truck with one or two trailers. All dressed up with chrome etc.Mostly older Mexican o/o take great pride in their equipment!

  18. Hvy gunner,I wonder what rpm that 453 is at in od at 55mph? 2cycle Detroit s weren't famous for fuel economy. My dad had a46chevy  flatbed he hauled scrap cars with. I had a 47Chevy fleetline Tudor.his engine blew up and he took the engine out of my car and put it in his truck while I was at school! I got off the school bus and the hood was crooked on my car! I lifted the hood and it fell on the ground. What could I say?I was 14 and he needed the truck to feed me!It was the only Chevy flatbed with a chrome valve cover!

I'll ask him next week i see him. I thought it sounded high but then again who knows. I always wanted to put one in a 2 ton truck since they are dirt cheap to run around and make noise with.

Jack 2052, Hope you find your dad's fire truck, the only on on Craigslist down here in fla was an American La France!Wasn't red!lol.

  20. I pity those folks unable to do even basic maintenance on new cars and trucks! A trip to almost any dealership necessitates the purchase of a jar of Vaseline! Of course many repairs on a big truck requires thousands of dollars worth of lifting and other specialized equipment.also a helper! Don't give the s.o.b.'s any new ideas for a "sweetheart" emissions agreement with the EPA! So far here in Fla we have no state inspection.for non commercial vehicles, and no emissions testing except in high population areas. Of course I'm not so naive as to think that couldn't end momentarily! The only noticeable result of this is the high number of burnt out headlamps turn signals etc! With state inspection at least the vehicles get checked once a year! By the same token I run a straight exhaust on my pickup and the cops don't say anything! My wife says it's like riding with a 15 year old!!lol

  21. I remember after 911 we were no longer allowed to go over Hoover dam with an 18 , necessary, imagine a tanker with something explosive or toxic deliberately going over the. Edge! The colorado river provides water for the whole southwest.having said that,of course they will milk the chance to add fees! Before 911 I crossed into Ontario with no problem, lots of  precleared loads, or a few minutes at the broker. The 1st time after 911 they unloaded my trailer to ck.my load, with a 150buck fee took 10minutes! Also asked to ck. My cab.Not knocking Canada, they are always polite "to a fault".actually nicer than my own customs people.once I was running up 95 with a drop in Caribou maine

They cut me off again! Anyway it was 3am and I'm dozing off,so I miss the exit for us1! The next thing I see the sign for Atlantic time zone,I'm in NB!,then I come up on customs. The Canadian lady says just make a u turn and I'll call the U.S. side and tell them you are coming.I get to the U.S. side and the customs guy says"why wouldn't they let you into Canada"?so of course I had to explain the whole deal to him.

  22. I was working a construction job, building Margate Florida.was driving a little 6yd dump with a manual gate, some guy came up while I was dumping and asked me for directions and I forgot to grab the gate handle !! Next thing I know I'm looking at the sky!

  23. If there are any Cabover fans on the site the Tampa bay craigslist has two brand new Argosy double bunk glider kits for sale ( hvy equip) Actually good looking in a modern way !unlike those godawful ugly earlier ones with the ridiculous swing out staircase.Look like the Cabover version of that new international conventional.

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

The international conventional I compared the new Argosy to is called the lone star.Is there any corporate connection between Freightliner and Navistar? The company alliances change hourly! So I can't keep track! KSB,or Teamster Grrrl ?

    2. BillyT

Snoball, I just checked outbehindthebarn's waterloo Iowa reference! That cab style is the one I think of when I hear " crackerbox". In fact it's identically spec'd to the one I learned on,except for the long wheelbase. That Craigslist has all kind of good stuff! In fact by and large the Midwest has the best selection of vintage " iron" anywhere. The little dodge dump that runs and drives is about as cheap as you can get into a running antique truck anywhere! Many of the farm trucks aren't exposed to the salt as much as road trucks, because it's seasonal! I used to love to get a weekend layover at a McDonald's in the "corn belt" and listen to the old farmers sit around and b.s.about crops and weather, and the people are so friendly! However, they do have that "winter thing"😁

  24. IoOfAm looking to find a b  model to fix up down here in Florida.just throwing around a few ideas.have any of u heard of a b series Cummins swap into a b model? Does a bell housing exist to adapt to a triplex .I know a guy who put a 10 speed road ranger behind one in a f350 Ford hotshot used a stock bell housing. The. Torque specs are similar or higher as is the horsepower, compared to a673. 1000 lb lighter.I realize this is sacrilege! Would prefer a 673 if I could find a good runner.has to b a compound as the shifting is half the fun in a "hobby truck".thanks!
