  1. Mrs mack Paul ,you mentioned the Hand built Hippo,Our freightliner was originally built by consolidated freightways mechanics in their Portland Oregon shop.they needed a short lightweight tractor that could pull longer trailers and haul more weight, hence the aluminum cab.this being the result of heavily enforced weight and length laws. The infamous DOT officers! I suspect they only wanted to get their cattle and freight hauled in Australia.

Are you talking about the laws they have today,or the ones when the Hippo was built? Did they pass a law against two engined trucks in general or did it affect only that one design?

  5. K All there is no rhyme or reason concerning prices of antique big trucks and components! That pristine diamond reo that sold in Medina ohio that I would have hitchhiked the 1000 mi. To buy sold for 3500. A beautifully   restored B75 in Washington state is for sale for 17k What can you buy for 17k in the auto world? a stripped Kia reo!  what can you buy off 3500,? A 10 yr old 200k stripped Kia reo!Nothing against kias they are reliable cars, but as boring as my wife's corolla! We as truck drivers/afficianados,not the "steering wheel holders" who couldn't tell you how a diesel is different from a gas engine, are fortunate to be able to recognize quality.

  6. aren't any dumb questions, just the ones  you didn't ask! You'd hafta change the drums obviously, but maybe you'd get lucky and find drums that would work with your existing spindle and brake linings. It's a real common setup,so there has one of the guys who've Done it.

  9. On the subject of Jay,what I like about him is he is interested in everything mechanical, not just socially acceptable high buck stuff, lambos,Ferraris etc.He has driven virtually everything on wheels! Steam tractors, that outrageous tank engined roadster and so on.I just received a window motor from rock auto.com,for a 93Camry. 32 bucks plus shipping.(The whole unit, incl.drive assembly) they give you a choice of name brand Dorman was mentioned,or el cheapo(which I bought) the thing worked perfectly and looked like the original. they list all the major big trucks,Mack,'s etc. But only  cover later models. The part I got was 80 bucks at auto zone .That photo of Heavy gunners hay field, makes me wanna sing God bless America! And they're burning our flag!

  12. Gray hair, wish you were my neighbor! Did you see my post on Jimmy deans comments concerning the desecration of our flag?He was from Midland I think. had one of his sausage biscuits for breakfast last wk! Glad u found a b model to restore. You are fortunate,to live in Texas where there there is  so much rust free antique "iron"! I can't count the potential  street rods and old tks I've seen in w.Texas! Speaking of street rods, Tommy ivo's nailhead t bucket used to turn 12sec. @127mph!wow! What fun with a near vertical steering column! My dad owned the local salvage yard when I was a kid .can't count how many nailhead Buick motors we scrapped! They never wore out, unlike the dynaflow tyranny behind them!.Ivo's four engine rail

Don't let the old I'm tired of looking at it thing cause you to make a big financial mistake!a lot of towing outfits need a backup wrecker, and have the facilities and skills to handle the welding and engine repairs.Just say'n

  19. smart phone? What's that? I refuse to own an electrical appliance smarter than me! for what the youngsters (that's pretty much everybody) pay for one I bought anew Hobart ac/dc welder that I can build stuff with!

  20. Brocky, thanks for your response ! My 201 had a banjo style steering wheel, may have had a horn ring ,but was long gone by the time I got it! The nut was exposed on the wheel.Definitely had the lighter and clock. The lighter still worked in 66 when I got the truck!. it was a wrecker, had an old manly hand crank unit.Have some pictures, will try to send them. tragically, DT trucks became incrementally less deluxe, until their demise in 65.There were A few bright moments however, like B C Fry's thundering 12v71,475 h.p. 951,that  went out in a "blaze of glory " on the ohio/indiana line in1958  "My heroes have always been cowboys" So they have a show in Leesburg? I'm an hour and a half away maybe next year!

  21. Speaking of thugs in the wrong  line of work,a tanker driver told me he was delivering to the old Hunts point market in the Bronx and a dude with a can of Freon and a  hammer jumped on the back of his tank at a light.(looking for a lock to break)! The trucker behind  told him on his radio," you're not gonna believe this!"  for you construction guys that may wonder what I'm talking about,What the thief does is sprays Freon on the loop of the lock (to make it brittle) then smacks the lock with a 2 lb hammer! then opens the doors and throws out some product to sell on the street. There is a message concerning evolution here, but I'll leave it to the PhD's to interpret!

  22. Isuzu makes a bulletproof product,I have a92 pu  with 170k .I've owned 100 cars and trucks, not one comes close in build quality to this 1200dollar pu! That includes studebakers,50's buicks and other cars known for build quality. When I was in the "hotshot" business one of my fellow contractors had an Isuzu c.o.e.His dad worked for  gm's Packard elec.in warren oh,so he had to put GMC emblems on it to park at home! On the Allison tranny subject,is that transmission a full auto.? or is it a semi auto? There have been for several yrs 9 and10 spd r.r. based semi auto trannys, the

  23. Just hit me,how the hell do you ban assault trucks?if they're talking about the stroke who drove into the crowd in France, yeah, if he knew it was illegal to drive into a crowd and kill 80 people he wouldn't have done it! I If the world was run by truck drivers or little kids it'd be a better place!

  24. Freightrain, speaking of old "jimmys"in the70's there was a kid hauling steel with a longnose gmc v12 gasburner 20sp.Spicer.probably had less trouble pulling hills than finding gas stations!@4mpg! Running outta Pittsburgh,we mostly ran all the auto plants in your state, sometimes as far west as Chicago, and Detroit. By  The way ,what is your "home " drag strip?
