  1. aren't any dumb questions, just the ones  you didn't ask! You'd hafta change the drums obviously, but maybe you'd get lucky and find drums that would work with your existing spindle and brake linings. It's a real common setup,so there has one of the guys who've Done it.

Big dog,you aren't old enuf,( be glad) but a couple of us who were driving in the 70's remember The UPS diamond reo c.o.e.,day cabs.Wonder who got them? Would be kinda cool either as is,Or with a period correct box sleeper. Have been on a diamond reo kick for a  couple wks, since I missed that 86 tractor with the Deutz air cooled diesel, for 1800bucks.too late I find out how reliable they were, also how rare.On the Dayton wheel pin stripe issue,Can only recall seeing one, didn't like it.Much nicer with a dark color wheel( with little Mack hubcaps) and silver or white snap rings.Or w/o the caps.Just opinions everybody has different tastes.

My uncle worked for Buster Brown in the "80's driving F models and MH's, they still had some DT/DR cabovers!

  2. You  had to mention Hillary!! Every damn time I turn on my tablet I see her face! Every time I turn on the TV I hear her voice! I'm thankful for the mute button!

LOL politicians bring that out in us

The US is in a real mess I dont think Trump or Hillary are much good if Trump gets in it will be only because the opposition is crap , sorry Hilary you arent the right person for the job at all and Trump aint much better from what I know

You're dead right! They are both "at the trough" did I spell that right?( the receptacle a pig eats out of) I'm very much convinced that anyone who thinks either one cares about anyone but themselves,is very naive!

  3. Who makes the GAZ 66 4by4 ? Is that a pickup or a big truck? Do you get American "reality shows" in Moscow ? If so have you seen "Cuban Chrome"?

    1. Vladislav

      Vladislav

Hi, GAZ-66 is a medium class military vehicle. It was produced from 70's to 90's at GAZ plant in Russia. v8 gasser COE, usually universal military body, van, or different equipment carrier. Might be equipped with mechanical winch. Sorry for the poor foto. I doubt there any American reality show are translated overhere. Some local ones could be catched by TV. Although they aren't my cup of tea. I don't watch TV at all. Just don't have antenna or a cable:)

  4. Hvy gunner,I wonder what rpm that 453 is at in od at 55mph? 2cycle Detroit s weren't famous for fuel economy. My dad had a46chevy  flatbed he hauled scrap cars with. I had a 47Chevy fleetline Tudor.his engine blew up and he took the engine out of my car and put it in his truck while I was at school! I got off the school bus and the hood was crooked on my car! I lifted the hood and it fell on the ground. What could I say?I was 14 and he needed the truck to feed me!It was the only Chevy flatbed with a chrome valve cover!

I'll ask him next week i see him. I thought it sounded high but then again who knows. I always wanted to put one in a 2 ton truck since they are dirt cheap to run around and make noise with.

Saw a 49 Diamond T with one with a 5 spd and a 3sped Brownie was a two ton.Was on u tube lots of fun!

  5. Red Horse, I am npi ( no political affiliation) but I find most celebrities intolerable! But Streep was dead on concerning Trumps mocking the disabled newsman! We've all seen the clip how the f... can he or his handlers deny it? The first election I was old enough to remember was Eisenhower/ Stevenson 1950 I think, we were Democrats like 98 percent of blue collar people at the time. At some point blue collar people tended to become Republican. You have to be a certain age to remember this! Another thing I remember is that NO presidential candidate was ever rude or impolite (at least in public!) To his or her opponent! This is the person that has to deal on America's behalf with every world leader! I always thought George Bush would be a good guy  to have a beer with, but not necessarily a great world leader! Having said that I think he and Laura had a great idea by leaving the presidential part of their ballot blank! I equally deplore Trump and the entire Clinton dynasty, good riddance,I'd like to think! But we all know better! Ok my rant is over, let's talk about trucks! Well school buses actually! Dropped off my grandkids this morning and was following a school bus. It has a sign "stop when lights are flashing"  they all do right? But the damn sign is in English only! As I understand it you don't have  to speak English to "qualify" for a drivers license, they assign an interpreter right? Every major retailer has signs in English and Spanish, every product you buy has instructions in up to four languages, but

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

A person who can't speak enough ( or any) English to read the drivers test and will forget like the majority of motorists, most of what they were taught in their drivers test in a short period of time, can run over your children because they don't have a sign on the bus in Spanish to remind them to stop!

    2. Red Horse

Billy- agree on the mocking-absolute BS that he was NOT mocking this guy-as I understsnd it, he had personal knowledgr of this guy-so he KNEW what his affliction  was.

  6. Freightrain saw your post about the young couple and the  flood zone! We looked at the property we now live on for several months during hvy rains, and a tropical storm.Saw no significant flooding. We built our house, and 5 yrs later they declare us in a flood zone! We are 6miles from the Gulf coast and not near any body of water! In other words we have none of the benefits that make people willing to live in a flood zone (and pay flood insurance) Like living on the ocean or a canal where you can dock a boat and so on.There are 5 houses visible from our front door, and only us an our neighbor are in a flood zone! We got flooded and were glad to have the insurance, but we feel the county created the flood zone by not properly sewering the new school they built 1/4 mile away,or the toll road they built several miles away.We sit in the watershed between these two infrastructures. We obviously wouldnt have built in a flood zone without the "benefits". Of course they raise the flood insurance rate every year!

Have you seen the reports of people in Florida where whole allotments were built on old swamp land.  Now, 5 yrs later they find their property starting to settle and fall into the abyss(sink hole).  Nothing they can do or say.  They'll loose everything and no insurance to cover it.  I'll bet there will be a bunch of law suits over it.

    2. BillyT

      BillyT

In the 50's it was a common ploy to create phony brochures showing some tropical paradise, and elderly retirees would invest their life savings and find the land they bought was on the edge of the everglades, without the clubhouse and golf course they were promised! There were more of these scams than you could count. Around 2008 and before if you had a sinkhole your homeowners policy would have you get a couple of estimates and pay you for the repair. Sinkhole repairs start at 100grand and go up!Well,a lot of people, especially those who were " upside down on their mortgage would just take the money and run! Leaving the bank with a house nobody would buy! The banks and insurance companies got fed up and had their "bought and paid for" legislators pass a bill where there is a10 percent deductible on sinkhole repair money and the money goes to the contractor or the bank. The bill was slipped thru quietly, probably " on the back" of another bill! It really puts a screwing on honest people who would repair the damage!

  7. Been to Simmons quite a few times, used to run the Shenandoah valley quite a bit. I haven't been to a flying j since pilot bought them is it better or the same? I kinda lean toward waffle house over huddle house, depends on the location.

Been  a long time, They tended to have a good buffet, quality varies according to management! Tended to cater to tourists sadly! My favorite on 81 in Va was Whites. Thanks for the reply!

  8. Carlotpilot, your post about old trailers with air operated emergency systems, brings us to the next episode of "Adventures in car hauling" When I first started hauling cars I had an old Bankhead 6car without maxis. Was driving a 69 f 750 with a 391 Ford engine, both single axle.I was taking a "shortcut" to Cumberland down rte 160 thru Berlin pa home of the potato chips. This has to be a 9 percent grade!  Also " windy" After a mile or two I noticed the brakes weren't slowing me  like they should at the same time the pressure gauge is heading towards 60,the buzzer comes on and a little metal flag is swinging from the headliner,( remember them) S..T! I'm  waiting for the nonexistent max is to lock up! I'm also approaching a blind right turn at about 40mph! Skipped,2or3 whole gears with it " flat on the mat" the 5000redlined tach goes around twice! And I "put it on the hillside" In slow motion the whole  right side of the rig leaves the ground probably by 2 or 3feet! And it teeters for a second, and crashes to the ground! My wallet which was on the dash went out the open window and was on the pavement! A tree branch on the hillside is in the right window and leaves are in my face! I  got out collected my wallet, and checked the truck.Had a full load of big cars and pickups. Not a scratch! Amazing! Prior to taking this job I drove mostly late model equipment with maxi brakes. We found out later I had blown a diaphragm on the trailer the air tank probably delivered air to the brakes and it leaked out immediately.Five years later I thought I'd " try 160 again" Had a brand new five axle rig with only three pintos on! At the bottom of the hill my brakes were smoking! I guess it was as steep as I thought! Ironically a B model mack wrecker towed me to the shop for repairs at 15 mph! I got the  Cumberland drops off and was on my way to Wva. And the 391 puked !,guess they're not designed to turn 10000rpm lol

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

The "rest of the story" After the accident an old "Reformed Mennonite" Noah Yoder, and his wife Sarah, (funny how you remember that stuff) rode me to a store to make a phone call.I carried that diaphragm around for months, as evidence to the equipment failure, thinking they might fire me for the accident.Nobody ever said a word!

    2. carlotpilot

      carlotpilot

that was one of those O shit moments  lol  glad ya survived

  9. Those of us who actually drove  over the road know they took a lot of liberties with tractor types in convoy! Looks like some Hollywood type went to a truck auction and bought the cheapest trucks he could find.that r model day cab with the "kangaroo guard" looks like an oilfield truck

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

Is that r model a "compound" if so I wonder if Kris actually drove it?knowing him he probably did! I'm pretty sure Chuck Napier drove the f model in "moonfire"  it was a "compound" as was Richard egan's r model.I'm doing a survey... What was the stupidest "trucker"movie ever? I'm voting on white line fever!

  10. 41 Chevy, thanx for the comeback on  the wolf two engine tractors, also on the Diamond Reo with the Dietz air cooled diesel engines. The thing actually did resemble a mid80's anteater with a longer hood.Not. the pretty T600 's, but the "tonka toy" looking ones KW and a few others built.I found a video of a Dietz a guy was building for a truck project, kinda resembles a continental aircraft engine. The Diamond Reo is already sold, the guy only wanted 1800 bucks for it,said it ran and drove.

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

On the subject of Hillary it would appear perhaps SHE should have had a  more comprehensive background check!

  11. T Grrrl, have you ever heard one of  the anti truck citizens say get rid of trucks send it all by rail! Makes sense to me! After all the steel wheel is the cheapest method per ton at present to expedite freight, also the least polluting. Keeping that in mind, where in you're backyard shall we put that siding!!asshole. And who will pay for it you and I of course we've been paying for the subsidized railroads for decades! In addition to my 3 million miles of trucking I have four years as a freight car repairman at one of the only self supporting railroads in AMERICA.the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie RR.in Mckees Rocks Pa. The P and L E's number 1 customer was Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. So when the major steel companies took the profits the United Steel Workers generated and bought new state of the art mills in China,Brazil and elsewhere( under a different name of course) Our railroad went under. You almost would have to be a railroader to understand the abysmal condition of our railroads and their roadbeds and infrastructure!

Mack man, that's amazing that a Napa clerk was that clueless,of the "chain" parts stores Napa caters to commercial accts. Most of the clerks are older and understand paint and body supplies, etc.Would expect that at AutoZone or advance! Alvada is near Findlay, couldn't place it used to stop at the Pilot there. I agree about two tone Daytons with chrome Mack hubcaps or bearing caps on early Macks!

  12. 41,what off track question did you ask? I either missed it or wasn't offended by it!

    1. 41chevy

      41chevy

I asked if you thought the NRA was in any way involved. No big deal I thought. :)

  13. Mack global,I didn't see the the original discussion(about liner removal) I'm a certified welder and an an auto mechanic, but not a diesel mechanic.in the old days they used to pack the liner with dry ice(to shrink it) and drive it or jack it up from below. I'm thinking  you want a way to weld a bar across the bore of the liner and pull it out from above with a hoist?  Of course assuming you are throwing it away! If so and the liner is hardened  steel(as most are,a good welding electrode would be 7018,low hydrogen 1/8 rod at around 120/ 125 amps dc electrode  positive. If the liner is stainless steel you could use 308/16 stainless rod or nickel rod trade name "ni rod" electrode positive(i think) the box will tell you the preferred polarity and amperage. It  has been 40 years  since I've used nickel or stainless rod, my memory is a little fuzzy! I'm assuming you are using a "stick welder" if you're  using mig  process you will have to ask your supplier  for the proper wire roll for the metal  you are welding. Hope that helps!

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

Mack global,I just saw you're  other post concerning "stick welding" .There are numerous videos. On  u tube showing how to stick weld.if  you are working in a remote area without electricity you will need to get a petrol or diesel powered generator/welder.They all function as both a welder and a generator. Some will do both at the same time (like when you need lights,or a grinder or drill).I would suggest that you practice on some pieces of scrap iron before you weld on the liner.

  14. The first time I drove a B I was 6'2"  and 170,close but no problem! Now I'm 180, wonder if it makes a difference? He must be a good friend if you let him drive your B!

    1. Freightrain

      Freightrain

He was 6'-1, 320# when we tried to fit him in.  He is down to 280# and slowly working to get even lower.  I'm only 5-10 and 170# so I fit well.  I can stretch my left leg out under the dash and drive comfortably.

Ya, I've known him for a very long time.  He would have caught on to the two sticks with a little time behind the wheel.   I don't have many people I know that could even come close to getting it moving, let alone drive it down the street.  I'd like to see/hear it go down the road, but no one can drive it?

  15. Took me a minute to get the jist of your comment! (I'm old) I personally refuse to own a smart phone I have no need for 300 "friends" I've never met! I realize they are fascinating I also realize that the many members who are contractors have to have one (their customers expect it) but every time some idiot walks into me while talking on one or I'm in a doctor's office and every person waiting is staring at one like a zombie I long for the days when I ran several small businesses with a double entry ledger and a #2 pencil! They've already put the local bookstore out of business, libraries will be next. Ok my rant is over!

    1. Ezrider

      Ezrider

it took me a second as well, it was part of why i found it funny. i resisted the smart phone thing for a very long time, i have one now but my use/ability to use it. is fairly limited. if i didn't have some customers that want to communicate by text message i probably would still have a flip phone. my other half still does not have a smart phone.

  16. I remember after 911 we were no longer allowed to go over Hoover dam with an 18 , necessary, imagine a tanker with something explosive or toxic deliberately going over the. Edge! The colorado river provides water for the whole southwest.having said that,of course they will milk the chance to add fees! Before 911 I crossed into Ontario with no problem, lots of  precleared loads, or a few minutes at the broker. The 1st time after 911 they unloaded my trailer to ck.my load, with a 150buck fee took 10minutes! Also asked to ck. My cab.Not knocking Canada, they are always polite "to a fault".actually nicer than my own customs people.once I was running up 95 with a drop in Caribou maine

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

They cut me off again! Anyway it was 3am and I'm dozing off,so I miss the exit for us1! The next thing I see the sign for Atlantic time zone,I'm in NB!,then I come up on customs. The Canadian lady says just make a u turn and I'll call the U.S. side and tell them you are coming.I get to the U.S. side and the customs guy says"why wouldn't they let you into Canada"?so of course I had to explain the whole deal to him.

  17. The second bunk on a"michigan train" is where he keeps the tire man! Speaking of "tire men" right after hurricane Andrew, virtually every tri axle dump truck in America was in Dade county,Florida all d.o.t.inspections were suspended if it could make it under its own power to fl.it was sold for 3 times it's value! All the roads were covered with glass, metal scraps, and nails!every major intersection had at least one tire repair truck, just waiting! There were lines of trucks as far as the eye could see waiting to dump! At 50bucks an hr around the clock

Trailer. Or... flatbed freight outta Utah being as scarce as it used to be someone might want a load to get them to there next partial.

  18. Used to haul 3  military humvees, they weigh about 8000lbs look on the load board ,in a t.s. for a flatbed with ramps and a light load going east.If the rates are still as cheap outta Utah as they used to be you might find someone! Obviously he would need room on the t

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

R models were made for a long time should be a lot of"interchange"  on the doors,I'd try some truck salvage yards, possibly away from the coast as salt is hard on steel parts.Or you could get really lucky and find one off an RL700 I believe they were aluminum! Good luck!

  19. Freightrain, speaking of old "jimmys"in the70's there was a kid hauling steel with a longnose gmc v12 gasburner 20sp.Spicer.probably had less trouble pulling hills than finding gas stations!@4mpg! Running outta Pittsburgh,we mostly ran all the auto plants in your state, sometimes as far west as Chicago, and Detroit. By  The way ,what is your "home " drag strip?

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

freightrain,I drove a b61, 711 with a triplex that would do80mph@2100, obviously an overdrive. If you were to swap in a modern big block,454,427,455 etc. Into that chassis, they will all do 5000rpm,what would it top out at! Also I know the triplex would handle the torque but would it and the diff.handle the rpm?  It would be sacrilege to put a gas v8 into a restored B model, but I'm always thinking out of the box!

  20. freightrain,I don't know how old you are,but if Grayhair is reading this he is old enough to answer this question.in the 70's there was coast to coast team operation(probably reefer) running tag axle gas jobs Ford or Chevy ,with box sleepers. At 100k their mechanics would install a new "long block"engine. That was all you could get out of a gas engine with the lubricants of the day.Did the swap in a couple of hrs.Other than the atrocious mileage a gas engine got,the benefits were many!Low initial cost, light weight, with the 73280gross limit, low cost of parts etc. Does anyone remember what this company was called?

    1. Freightrain

Hi BillyT.  I just turned 50 on Sunday(ugh).  Got plenty of gray hair though......

Can't say I know of the company you speak of.

  21. Isuzu makes a bulletproof product,I have a92 pu  with 170k .I've owned 100 cars and trucks, not one comes close in build quality to this 1200dollar pu! That includes studebakers,50's buicks and other cars known for build quality. When I was in the "hotshot" business one of my fellow contractors had an Isuzu c.o.e.His dad worked for  gm's Packard elec.in warren oh,so he had to put GMC emblems on it to park at home! On the Allison tranny subject,is that transmission a full auto.? or is it a semi auto? There have been for several yrs 9 and10 spd r.r. based semi auto trannys, the

Other dog,you went thru Sharon pa and didn't stop at Quaker steak and ale? Lol also your cross bronx comment, reminded me of the time I was on that hallowed highway with 8000 lb in the trl.,and my emergency side gladhand  came off! instant lane change! from that day forward I duct taped my glad hands on that road! Did I say road?!

  22. Brocky, thanks for your response ! My 201 had a banjo style steering wheel, may have had a horn ring ,but was long gone by the time I got it! The nut was exposed on the wheel.Definitely had the lighter and clock. The lighter still worked in 66 when I got the truck!. it was a wrecker, had an old manly hand crank unit.Have some pictures, will try to send them. tragically, DT trucks became incrementally less deluxe, until their demise in 65.There were A few bright moments however, like B C Fry's thundering 12v71,475 h.p. 951,that  went out in a "blaze of glory " on the ohio/indiana line in1958  "My heroes have always been cowboys" So they have a show in Leesburg? I'm an hour and a half away maybe next year!

      BillyT

you have Neil youngs band in a museum?

  23. Speaking of thugs in the wrong  line of work,a tanker driver told me he was delivering to the old Hunts point market in the Bronx and a dude with a can of Freon and a  hammer jumped on the back of his tank at a light.(looking for a lock to break)! The trucker behind  told him on his radio," you're not gonna believe this!"  for you construction guys that may wonder what I'm talking about,What the thief does is sprays Freon on the loop of the lock (to make it brittle) then smacks the lock with a 2 lb hammer! then opens the doors and throws out some product to sell on the street. There is a message concerning evolution here, but I'll leave it to the PhD's to interpret!

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

You must have to be athletic as hell to accomplish this, perhaps a career in sports would be called for! I actually saw a thief jump into the back of a reefer  while the driver was backing in at the old Acme warehouse in Philly.Threw 2 cases of tomatoes to his accomplice on the ground, but the guard ran them off.Amazing the level of effort some folks will go to to avoid a days work!

  24. smart phone? What's that? I refuse to own an electrical appliance smarter than me! for what the youngsters (that's pretty much everybody) pay for one I bought anew Hobart ac/dc welder that I can build stuff with!

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

      Guerrilla 516,diggin' your B,

  25. 66,the B model pickup is looking good how about about some overall photos? The first big truck pickup I ever saw was at a truck stop in California in the 90s someone removed the cab and front end from a late model Ford dually and replaced it with a 60s KW cab and front end, looked factory! Very nice.
