  1. A good friend of mine bought an older RD tri axle dump years back. It was a "300" (676) and it ran really good, but he was concerned about the fact it would easily turn 2300 rpms under a load and really smoked. He took it to the local Mack dealer and ran it on the dyno, turned out it was putting 400 horses to the wheels! Needless to say, it was their recommendation to turn it back just a little.
  2. Looks like about a 110% chance that's a scam !!
  3. With the new trucks frame space in an issue. Anything shorter than 17'6" doesn't leave much room for fuel tanks. Make sure you look at a weight distribution, it's hard to get enough weight up on the steer. Here in Pa guys are starting to use 18' even 18'6" if you want to get your 16 -18k up on the steer axle.
  4. That engine looks like a 237 because of the fabricated intake manifold. The 673 turbo'd (ENDT 673) had a top 250 hp rating, but used a different style intake manifold. Like others said, over the years guys did mix and match parts, they used Maxidyne pistons in their turned up 673's. The engine model should be stamped in the edge of the timing cover, it was around the introduction of the "300"s that they started to put a data plate on the engine block, right behind the lines off the injector pump
  5. I agree we used to do alot more with alot less. (it just took longer) The new engines also have much better retarding horsepower, with many the retarding horsepower is nearly the same as pulling horsepower. I remember when Cummins came out with the Signaure 600, they advertised 600 hp to go, 600 hp to slow. Size does matter, even downhill!! The old rule that you go down the hill in the same gear you go up still has merit.
  6. Even if Mack were a "stand alone" company, who knows what it would look like today. We only assume it would look like the "old" Mack. Things change, it's a very different and very competative world out there. There were many years Mack owned over 50% of the heavy truck market. Look what happened - who's fault was that? Can't blame that on Volvo.
  7. What ever happened to the Gerald Pelletier Titans? Last I heard they were both wrecked. Did they put either one back on the road? Did they ever buy any more?
  8. A couple of Magnums, Mark Yoos, Hudson Supply, Skip McKean and Mussers
  9. On an Autocar I drove, there was a similar system, it was called "flame start", it actually made fire in the intake manifold. There was a separate panel that all this was mounted in, it had a pressure guage, switch for the glow plug, and a primer pump. It worked fairly well, except you could really use three hands, one for the compression release, one for the starter button, and one to operate the primer. Use of either was a BIG NO NO!
  10. In addition to what the others said, if it has chassis mounted charge air cooler, it is 4V, if it doesn't, it's 2V. There may be rare exceptions, like the 1000 series (forerunner of E9) V8. That also was the beginning of the Econodyne (4V & CMCAC) designation.
  11. The data plate for that engine should be right behind the injector pump. Looks like a 237 to me.
  12. That's good there Les, got to QC roadtest these product improvements!!!
  13. I think 84 Superdog is right, but this is how we have ours, it seems like it's easier to use and doesn't gouge into your leg.
  14. With a commercial registration, the CDL license criteria is relevant to the manufacturer's GVW rating, not what you have it registered for. Your truck should have a GVWR sticker in the door jamb (aka second stage MSO). A trailer with a manufacturer's GVW rating of over 10,000# also requires the operator to have a (class A) CDL, regardless of what it is registered for.
  15. There are no instuctions where to put the plate, so we followed the pattern of regular truck tractors, after all, you can still pull a trailer. Good question about the inspection, never thought about it, but we always had a commercial inspection mechanic do it.
  16. Looks like he took something very simple, and made it verrrryyy complicated????
  17. Looks alot like what we started out with. Stop around, we'll give it a free load test.
  18. Move over Superdog, there's a new fleet owner in town!!!
  19. Neil, please tell us more about the truck. Is it a factory Freedom edition? How is it equipped? Did your dad buy it new?
