  1. I've tried and tried to install the bushings myself but always ended up tearing them up pressing them in. I'd suggest letting a dealer press them in. Last time I had to do one on a W900 KW, it was only about $20 more to just buy the whole rod new.
  2. The craziest thing I ever saw was when I blew a coolant hose on a 400 Cummins. Autozone was within walking distance so I went there. I needed a 1" hose with a 90deg bend about 3" long. Told the parts guy what I needed and he quickly said they didn't have that. I said " you mean to tell me you don't have any 1" hose with a 90 on it?" He still said no but would let me look at their hose selection after I asked. I found a long 1" hose that had several bends and one was a 90. I told him I'd take it but he still said it wouldn't work because the hose I had fit a Honda. I told him was I was going to do and it blew his mind, like it was against the law or something to modify a part to fit something else. Another time I went to Advance Auto for a belt for a Ford Powerstroke. Guy punches all the info in the computer and brings out a new belt. I had the old one with me so I compared them before I left, the new belt was at least 3" too long. I tried to show the guy his mistake but he wouldn't have it. Even after I showed him the belt comparison, he just kept saying that the computer says it's right so it has to be right. Ended up just having to get a refund and go somewhere else. Another time Autozone wouldn't sell me a 12v coil without me telling them what it went on. Had to just leave because a 1954 Allis Chalmers tractor wasn't in their computer. I've also found that a lot of the younger guys don't even know what non-electronic ignition parts or carborators are. Our local NAPA is great. More times than not they can just look at the part and go pull one off the shelf. Only problem is if you need a part after 5pm or on Sunday, they are closed.
  3. I've never seen one either but I know a lot of trucks up north have butterfly hoods for snow plows. We don't have many snow plows this far south.
  4. The Firestone type RH-5 pictured above are the real dangerous ones. I've heard they are illegal to run on the road but I have no proof to back it up. If it's just a standard split ring rim, the are safe enough to change yourself if you follow some precautions. Run several raps of heavy chain around the tire and rim and use a clamp on chuck and air up from a safe distance.
  5. I agree. It took a lot of time and material for them to send me all that info free of charge. I would beg anybody that request truck info to send them a decent donation. This service could disappear otherwise.
  6. I submitted the VIN of my RD822sx to the Mack Museum to see what info they had on the truck. I have to say I'm blown away at what they sent me. A big box arrived today with a truck build sheet, Sales literature for the RD trucks of that vintage, dealer sales record, operators manual, lube manual, engine rebuild manual, and truck maintenance manual. All of this free of charge. They did sent a letter with everything stating that they accept donations and I will be sending them a sizable donation. In this day and age, it's just surprising that somebody would go to this much trouble for just asking for a donation.
  7. Depends on what you're going to do with the truck. You have to be very careful (however you mount them) if you'll be going in some rough places. Mount them high enough to miss the tires, the trailer can get into them. Mount them low enough to miss the trailer, the tires can get into them. They look good and are great for keeping mud off the truck but you have to be really careful to not tear them up. A taller 5th wheel will help.
  8. One has to wonder, if you put a exhaust brake on a engine already equipped with a engine brake, would you double the stopping power?
  9. I've seen time and time again, union leaders get the membership all worked up and vote for a strike. By the time all the dust settles, the union leaders come out smelling like a rose but the workers get screwed. And to top it all off the workers will praise the leadership for what they did. I'm not saying that's the case here because I don't know the details but in this day and time, you should be very careful what you wish for.
  10. That's strange, every exhaust brake I've been around you couldn't even hardly tell it was doing anything. What brand is the brake and what engine is it on?
  11. The E9 isn't like the older Mack V8s, completely different engine. Sounds pretty good and wasn't as problematic as the older ones. The one I've got is 500hp but I think they made a 400hp and 450hp version.
  12. From the exhaust brakes I've seen, they don't work very well. About the only reason I would ever consider one is if they didn't offer a engine brake for that engine. Exhaust brakes work nowhere nearly as well as engine brakes. You should be able to get yours fixed fairly easy, there's just not that much to them to go wrong. You've basically got a wiring problem or a solenoid problem or I have seen the valves so bad out of adjustment it caused problems.
  13. Wish I had a dime for every mile I've driven a c60, most of them before I was even 16. We've had a bunch of them over the years. Earliest was a '69 and we've currently got a '88 diesel.
  14. My brother has a quadruplex behind a 318 Detroit. The truck was a heavy hauler back in the day. The old quadraplex is still holding up.
  15. Now I say this whlie owning a E9, but I've never been a big fan of V8 diesels. More times than not, they will have a shorter stroke due to the Vee design. Shorter stroke means less torque. They are also usually harder to work on because they have more parts and the whole thing is usually stuffed in a tighter package. V8s are fine for your 350 chevys but when it comes to heavy duty diesels, I want a in-line.
  16. $900 sounds like a lot for some mostly worn out tires but for your use it may not be too bad. 25% of what they cost new would be closer to $700 (I think the last 11r-22.5 tires I bought new were around $350 a piece but I got a pretty good deal on them). If I were running the truck every day, I wouldn't even think about putting 25% tires on it.
  17. I had a 3406B in a '94 Freightliner that was the same way. The '83 FL we had with a 400 Cummins would blow it's doors off. We currently have a '94 Pete with the 3406B and it's a good puller but it's been tinkered with. My thinking is the 3406B isn't much right out of the box but with some mild tuning can be made into a puller. You can go all crazy with them and they will put out some hp but then you run into reliablity issues if you aren't careful.
  18. That's what I was wondering. I know overseas shipping cost money but not that much. I love my old Dodge Cummins but maybe I should send it over there and sell it. It's a '98 model with 240,000 miles and starting to get some rust, It should bring at least $30K over there. I find it also amusing that, according to Australia law, the 2500 can tow more than the 3500 and you need the equivalent of a CDL in the US to drive a 3500 and not a 2500. I knew Australia had some messed up gun laws but I didn't know their vehicle laws were such a mess.
  19. That's the problem, they are trying to make the truck hold up to idiots instead having people that know how to drive and won't tear up the truck, Sad it has to be this way but that's the situation in which we live.
  20. I've seen a 8v71 in a B model. It does fit but it's awfully tight.
  21. The urge to hear a un-muffled 8v92 wouldn't last long. I drove a straight piped 8v92 Mack once and ear plugs were mandatory.
  22. The best stuff I've used is called Indian Head. It's made to put on both sides of a gasket to seal but I've also used it without a gasket with good results. It's almost like a glue and works better than anything I've ever used. The only drawback is it's though to get the part removed if you ever have to get back in there. You can get it removed but if applied properly, it will be stuck pretty good.
  23. You have any sources to back up that claim? How many republicans voted for the Affordable Care Act? Shoot, they just barely did get enough democrats to vote for it.
  24. Well I don't do Facebook so I can't see the vid but only quick cash farming I've seen is people growing weed.
  25. I'm sorry but I can't let this slide. Typical liberal bullshit, trying to make the narrative racist. Nobody mentioned race, you did. But since you brought it up, I may just vote for the black man the next election, will you? To your comment about writing the EPA a letter, does anybody honestly think the EPA will listen?
