  1. If I were closer, I'd actually like to take a look at it. My Granddad was a AC dealer and we have several AC tractors and equipment. That's a pretty decent price if it moves under it's own power. From the looks of the brush growing on it, it may not though.
  2. From what I've heard, the new aluminum body doesn't hold up too well in a work truck. I like the aluminum from a corrosion aspect but it seems they didn't use a heavy enough gauge and/or braced it well enough.
  3. I had a '98 Dodge Cummins that served me well for 17 years and 240,000 miles. Sold it just a couple of months ago for good money for what it was. I never did really have any problems out of it than normal stuff for a old truck. I ended up going with a Chevy gasser replacement though. Mainly because any of the big 3 diesels are a maintenance/electronics nightmare and I just don't pull that big of loads anymore. On anything I buy, when I have the option, I'll opt out of electronics. On my new Chevy, it's got the good old 4x4 dog leg in the floor instead of electronic shift and I ordered it that way. It does have power windows that my Dodge didn't have and to be honest, I could do without them too.
  4. It may just mean that people are getting lazy. Another big factor is it's hard to find skilled workers that are willing to work. Skilled workers will be much more productive than non-skilled. More regulations on things like the trucking industry don't help productivity either.
  5. But, but, but, but I just heard Obama today say the economy is booming.
  6. It will just have to be past on to the customer, which will be the RI citizens most of the time.
  7. Show me proof of a ethanol plant that produces more energy than it used. At this time, the only way a ethanol plant stays afloat is because it's supported by the government. There have been a whole pile of them that have went bankrupt. Nobody as of yet has told me the advantages of ethanol. All Teamstergrrrl has said is they have gotten ethanol blends almost as good as straight gasoline, still not as good though. I'd be all for it if it was viable. Some day it may be but we are nowhere near there yet. I think the market should decide though instead of government forcing it down our throat. If ethanol is so great, we shouldn't need government to force us to use it.
  8. Ethanol is ethanol, wherever you are at. It is a scientific fact there are less btu in a gallon of ethanol than there is in a gallon of gasoline. That tells us that fuel mileage must go down with ethanol. I bought a new Chevy that can run E85. Just for the heck of it, I decided to run a tank. Fuel mileage was awful. I've got a pile of weed eaters and chainsaws that people have given men that ethanol has destroyed the fuel system. I took them thinking I'd fix them but haven't got around to it yet. Also, you show me a ethanol plant that produces more energy than it uses. They have gotten better over the years but they are still at a net loss. I'd just like to see somebody show me what the advantages are with ethanol, other than padding the pockets of the corn farmers. I'm all for the farmer but not at the expense of everybody else.
  9. Ethanol is one of the biggest scams that's ever been pulled (global warming is probably the biggest). Fact 1- It takes more energy to produce ethanol than it makes. Fact 2- there is less energy in ethanol than there is gasoline. This means adding ethanol to fuel decreases fuel mileage. Fact 3- Ethanol will cause all sorts of problems with older fuel systems, especially small engines and boat motors. Fact 4- There's not enough corn in this world to swap everything over to E85 and also feed everybody. About the only thing it does is help the corn farmers, while the rest of us have to suffer the consequences.
  10. A little known fact in the report that is very damaging. Hillary's personal server went down and she was unable to send or receive emails on her Blackberry. She was offered a State Department Blackberry but refused, stating she didn't want any of her emails to be part of public record. Instead she just went on a email blackout until her server was back on line. All this is backed up in her recovered emails. This shows a deliberate attempt to keep her official emails out of public record. This shows motive to hide her emails from public record, all the while foreign governments were getting them all from her unsecured server. If they want to find all the missing emails, they should just make a deal with Russia, I'm sure they have them all.
  11. There is nothing in common with a coal fired steam locomotive and coal fired power plants. Power plants use steam turbines which are much more efficient than piston engines that locomotives use. They in no way have the same problems that steam locomotives have and to say that is just being ignorant of the process. Be it coal, natural gas, or nuclear, they all use steam turbines to produce electricity. The only difference is how they heat the water. If coal is so expensive and in-efficient, why not let the market decide instead of the government putting them out of business? If coal is so costly, it would go away on it's own without government intervention. You are right that it is very, very costly to build a new coal plant. The reason is the government has put such strict regulations that can't possibly be met and be profitable. Just another example of overreaching government interference with the free market. Obama and Hillary both have said that they want to but the coal industry out of business, I don't know why people just don't take them for their word. The same people that say either one would never lie, say they lie when you mention stuff like this.
  12. They don't even have to do that around here, they just turn them loose. I know a guy that had some Mexicans working for him (I have no idea on their legal status but I've got a good guess). One of them had been pulled over for at least 4 DUIs. All they would do is haul him in, find out he had no documentation, they wouldn't know what to do with him, and turn him loose. If it had been one of us, they would have us under the jail. Bottom line is, if you get pulled over, tell them you are a illegal alien and don't provide them with you DL or anything. There are pretty good odds they will just turn you loose if you're dark complected.
  13. I know a guy that used to run a small restaurant. He says ice is usually more expensive than whatever beverage is with it. He said ice machines cost a fortune to buy and maintain and are power hogs. He was buying his ice and finally broke down and bought a ice machine, he said his electric bill almost doubled with the ice machine running. If that's the case, restaurants would make more profit by selling drinks with no ice.
  14. Rear dumps are all but gone here also. A good front dump driver can spread it out really well and save you a lot of work, a bad driver can work you to death.
  15. I don't want to swap to tubeless, I was just curious what the options were. Thanks for the responses. I've got 65K axles, if I wanted to change I'm not sure how easy hubs would be to find.
  16. My Rd822 has 11.00-24 tube type tires. Not that I want to change them out but my brother and I were talking about what you would do to swap over to tubeless Daytons. Now I know 22.5 will replace a 20 and 24.5 will replace a 22 but I've never seen a tubeless replacement for 24. Now I suspect if you had buds you could just bolt on a 24.5 but that won't work with Daytons. Are there tubeless replacements for 24s?
  17. I've been looking at the multipliers also. I've seen all the vids and by the looks of it, my 7 year old could spin them right off. As we all know though, the vids can be deceiving. The by far worst to remove is stud pilot buds that have been on awhile. I've broken 1" drive ratchets trying to get them off on the side of the road and then you have the one or two inner nuts that want to come off with the outer.
  18. The crusher run we have around here will settle quite a bit if not compacted really well. It's interesting to see the different construction methods in different parts of the country. If we have to fill around here, you either use washed rock or compacted clay dirt. It makes no since to use crusher run because it cost at least twice as much as clay dirt, and you have to compact both anyway. I'm not saying one method or the other is right or wrong, it's just different soil conditions and what's available for fill in different parts of the country. I live on a farm and we don't have to worry about building permits. My shop is a 48X30 Blitz building. It's equipped as well as any but looks rather modest compared to some on here (no fancy doors or anything like that).
  19. On the Western Star, are those just add on hubs you put on standard axles? Edit- A quick Google search and I found the answer to my question. I didn't know something like that existed. It's a interesting concept but I bet it cost a bunch to equip a set of tandems. I also noticed on their website that it listed the max weight per axle with the hubs is 26,000lb. That doesn't seem like much when you go to talking about heavy hauling. My RD822 has 65k rears so that would be 32,500lb each axle. If I understood the website right, by adding these hubs on my Mack, my total rear tandem capacity would be reduced to 52,000lb.
  20. David, I was worried about that and the overdrive gear is quite a bit narrower that the rest. I'd say it would be wise to stay out of OD during heavy pulling. I might would do some dealing on the 1202 but I've already spent $1,600 in parts to rebuild this one. I've got a KW that could use a some more gears also so I'll keep you in mind if I ever get around to that project. The guy a bought the box from has run these 1241s for years and probably the most knowledgeable heavy haul person in this area. I don't like to throw out names without people's permission but any heavy haul truckers in the middle TN area will know who I'm talking about. He said, if you treat it right, this box will hold up to anything you throw at it and the driveshaft will fail before the box does. He also said that what gets most boxes is running in lower transmission gears with the auxiliary in OD.
  21. Checked the rear ratio today and it's 5.88. I'm also running 11.00-24 tires.
  22. While I liked Burt and Jerry Reed, Jacky Gleason made that movie.
  23. Welding on races in AL hubs won't hurt a thing. While AL does melt a much lower temp than steel, the AL hub just works as a very big heat sink and you could get the race red hot and it wouldn't hurt the hub.
  24. I've got a RD822 with a 12 speed and I'm getting ready to install a Spicer 1241, 4 speed auxiliary. I don't recall the rear end ratio but it's low and the truck tops out around 60 mph right now. What I'm wondering is if I can run the truck safely in 12th gear on the main box and OD on the auxiliary? I'm worried it would spin the rears too fast. I'm mainly installing the auxiliary for the lower gears but the double OD would be nice out on the highway,
  25. I've got my class A but still tag all my "play" trucks farm use. In TN, that's about the only way you can haul anything without getting commercial tags. You can tag them with antique plates but you can't haul anything with them and only drive on weekends and special events.
