"I've got a 13 speed transmission with a 3 speed auxiliary and a 2 speed rear end, for a total of 78 forward speeds..."

This is just my opinion, but I think it was because it was just too close to Darlington and Charlotte. I've been to Charlotte many times, where Humpy Wheeler used to say "the pre-race activities are worth the price of admission". And Darlington is just a little ways down the road, it is one of the oldest tracks, and it has the museum and a lot more prestige than Rockingham did, with the Southern 500 being one of the biggest races of the season. So I think if people were going to spend a substantial amount of money going to a NASCAR race in the area, Rockingham ended up being the third choice, even though the racing there was great. Then when NASCAR starting adding new tracks and cutting some tracks back from 2 races a season to one race and dropping some altogether, tracks that didn't pretty much sell out for every race got the ax. I think North Wilkesboro had the same problem, it was too close to Charlotte and Martinsville. I never went to a race at Darlington, but between Charlotte and Rockingham, Charlotte was the show piece, but Rockingham had better racing. The track was just over a mile, Charlotte is a mile and a half, but the speeds were pretty close. They were running in the 160mph. range at Charlotte, and 140's at Rockingham at the time. You could watch at Charlotte and because the track was so big I might think "I could do that", when of course I really couldn't. No such thoughts at Rockingham though- i'd watch and think "holy $#!+, how can they even do that?!!" Couple of Rockingham pics from an old photo album- this is looking towards turns 3 and 4, from the seats on the backstretch. They were the unreserved seats. They had this GMC race truck there- Looking across towards the front stretch grandstands. Looks like a pretty good crowd on this day, eh? I still have a newspaper clipping of the race results. Morgan Shepherd was driving Jack Beebe's Race Hill Farm Buick that was pitting right across from where I was sitting, he finished 4th.

A dog in a car going south on rt. 220. I saw a girl in a car- a real, not even photo-chopped, scantily clad, smokin' hot girl, for the first time in a long time. Saw a girl jogging in Greenville, S.C. Another jogger- Another girl in another car- I had to go to Hoffman, N.C. and get a load of sand after I unloaded in Greenville. Passed by the old Rockingham race track. I went to a few races there in the 80's, drove the truck one time and parked out here in the field- this is at the north end of the speedway, outside turns 3 and 4. This would be turn 4, and the front stretch going in front of the grandstands. You can see U.S. Rt. 1 in the right side of the picture, I came up rt. 177. The dragstrip was over on the other side of rt. 1 from the NASCAR track. Then I got totally soaked- just drenched- tarping that load of sand in a torrential downpour!

Been seeing a lot of turkeys lately. One flew across rt. 24 in front of me the other day when I was going to Dillwyn- along about the same place I almost hit one last week. I saw another one fly across the road on rt. 39 in W.V. Wednesday, and saw two more this morning on the way to Altavista. I was on the way to Altavista, i'm not sure where the turkeys were going. I saw this meatloaf wrapped in bacon smoking on the grill last weekend- it was delicious too! Saw this big Mack truck in Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina ...where I was picking up this load of lumber. Loaded kyanite in Dillwyn after I unloaded the lumber in Troy, Va. Then I went to McKees Rocks and got a load of slit coils going to Lynchburg. I saw a mixer truck after I left Lane Steel. I even saw the goat on Powell Mountain for the first time in a long time!

Indeed- what Vlad said!
-
That's how I went, 80 to 355 then 38 west all the way to Randall Road, made a left, country club was a little ways down on the left.
-
Saw this come into a sawmill in Mt. Pleasant, N.C. today when I was there picking up a load of lumber.

Yeah, as you could see that gig didn't last long, back to the old grind already.

I saw some girl working at the country club too. She was carrying furniture, while I was standing around and taking pictures. I saw two cows standing on a trailer on I-65 They were just down the road from the big fork on the trailer- Near Maysville, Ky. I picked up a load of auto parts in Romeoville, Il. ...going to the Advance Auto Parts distribution center in Roanoke, Va. When I got unloaded there yesterday I had to stop by N.B.Handy in Lynchburg, drop the van trailer, hook to the flatbed trailer and pull it out, drop it, chain, strap and tarp a load of steel, then hook back to the van and take it to the yard. I'll leave tomorrow with the steel, it's going to Handy in Charlotte, N.C.

Been seeing a lot of turkeys lately- this one was in the back yard last week. I almost hit one that flew across the road in front of me on rt. 24 Monday when I was going to Richmond, then I saw three more fly across I-64 Monday evening in West Virginia. Still a little snow hanging around in W.V. Monday too- I guess somebody tried to pull into the shop too fast and turned over... Unloading furniture at some country club in Geneva, Il. I had to back up in here- Looks easy enough, but I was running out of room to get the truck straight over there on the far side. I had to pull up a few times and get the truck closer to the tree over on this side before I could get around the bend and come on back to where I needed to be. I'm not the wheel man vision386, nocluejoe66, green dash,..never mind- i'm not much of a wheel man,ok? I saw a river- And I saw some ducks in the ditch-

I was indeed sick as a dog for about a week and a half, felt like crap and just had no energy to do much of anything besides lay around and be miserable. I had no appetite and had to force myself to eat, mostly chicken noodle soup or just a boullion cube dissolved in a cup of water. I think I actually lost about 25 pounds in that week and a half, but I think I put 23 of them back from Thursday until today. I'm feeling a lot better now, I went back to work Thursday, and I thank everyone for their concern and well wishes.

This one sounded very promising... at least compared to the others she did. -
Saw a big turkey in a field a while ago- Then I saw a hen in a field just down the road from here-
-
I'll tell him. He was saying he might try a Benson.

I hope not- this was after I got back to the shop and the arch still wasn't back to where it once was. But, Jeff said he's gonna trade it for a new one soon. I'm on the third truck with this same trailer, i'm sure it's got close to a million miles on it. It's a good one!

But I did think about you again! I left Indianapolis a little after 10am- actually Westfield, just north of Indianapolis- and drove straight to Wooster. I thought they'd probably load me the next morning, but I called the guy in Wooster and he said to come on , they would load it that evening. So I didn't stop anywhere, and got there a little before 3. By the time they finally got it raised, loaded, blocked, situated, and I chained it down it was after 6, and I couldn't run after dark, so I had to get going. I had hoped to get to Mineral Wells, W.V. but only made it to Newcomerstown- then I had to tarp the thing! And my Ohio permit had me routed 30 east to Ohio rt. 94 south to 250. I don't know why I couldn't take 250 all the way, 30 all the way to 77 would have been better than rt.94, it sucked! I went up 94 with a load of Kyanite going to Orrville one time, and said i'd never make that mistake again. It was narrow, with a lot of crown in the road, crooked as a dog's leg, Amish buggies everywhere, and very steep hills- not real long hills, but so steep I was in 3rd. or 4th. gear in the low side getting up one of them.

I'm in a tight spot. Silos on the AA Highway in Kentucky. I took a load of beams to Indianapolis, then went to Wooster, Ohio to pick up a roll mill to take to Bedford, Va. It was 9'3'' wide and heavy- they told us it weighed about 55,000 lbs. but we might want to get a permit for 60,000 lbs, just in case. It took three forklifts to lift it... and they had to put a big electric motor on the back of the biggest one for an extra counter weight. When they finally got it up in the air I backed under it. It didn't just flatten the arch in the trailer, it put a noticeable sag in it! It was top-heavy too, rocked like a load of logs. I stopped and weighed it, and found out that the permits weren't worth the paper they were written on. I weigh a little over 31,000 empty, so that machine weighed over 66,000lbs. But I made it to Bedford OK, and got it unloaded Thursday evening. Oh, and I saw two girls throwing some trash in the dumpster in Petersburg Monday. Saw two blue trucks... and two red trucks. Actually, I've been practicing on my poorly photo-chopping work.

I interviewed another potential employee today, she even came down to check out the facilities, but still no luck, she didn't work out either. I told her to find her own way home, because I wasn't gonna take her back.
