3-53 Detroit Diesel In A Chevy Pickup

other dog

Recommended Posts

I once saw a chevrolet pickup at a truck show in Winchester with a 3-53 Detroit in it. I figured i'd post a picture in case Joe wants to get one and put it in his Suburban. Since my scanner doesn't work  I had to take a picture of the picture. Threw in some eye candy too, a beautiful old Chevrolet wrecker. It was no problem, It was on the same page in the photo album. :P

That green Chevy is owned by Dan Renovetz(junkmandan), here in Ohio. That ol truck has been around the world a bunch of times.

thanks Freightrain, now he knows who he can contact for help and advice. I think there's an article about it in one of my antique truck magazines, but I didn't know where to start looking.

A friend locally has a couple of vehicles that he has made Detriot powered. A Chevy Blazer and a Buick Riveria. he has had each of them to Gerhart's All-Mack meet and I believe the ATCA National Meet at Macungie. If I can locate my photos I'll share them. He has done a spectacular job shoehorning the screamers in each.

I install a 3 53 in a 58 chevy pickup about 15 years ago. This was a engine and trans like new that came from a military vehicle and was aluminum and still was heavy. This was a 3/4 ton and we shorten the frame for a short step side bed. The rear end was 4:11 and i install over size wheels and tires on rear to get ratio up and i think the fron had 17: rubber on it so it set level. i will try to find photo and post. I did cut RPM back to 2700 and losen up the rack some to keep from hurting the engine. It had good power and run about 70 mph and did good on fuel. I installed a good air cleaner on it to cut some of the noise and a new 3" exhaust to the rear and insulated the hood to cut the racket. The tach drtive was on the rear and i cut a small hole behind it in the fire wall for a tach cable and straight back into the tach.I let my son drive it to school his last school year and we live 2 miles from school in the rual area and i could here him coming home. had to tell him a couple of times you shift when you run out of RPM. It looked like a 5 speed chevy trans and was easy to cool. I install a new rad the rad shop had and told me it was from a old dodge pick up but it fit in the chevy. I will say again those are heavy engines and mine was alummin. I never did find out if the liners could be replaced in the block but i think not. The DD dear her had never seen one and did not have any info on it but after a year some one else wanted it and i sold it. glenn Some advice to any one who uses one in a small truck is do use good engine insulators. glenn

I'm afraid due to rainy weather and no trailer to use the motor's still at my buddy's house. I was gonna bring it to work and use the forklift to unload it from his trailer to mine, but nothing. His trailer already has alot of stuff on it so taking it to the house would be a problem plus it's in the middle of the trailer so forklifting it would be our only option...Anyway i have a buddy that's going through a divorce and needs a place to store his tools so he's gonna help me out with the project for a payment of storing his tools, good friend. Well i'm gonna go back to work now and you guys have a good one....

We'll guys i got her home, kinda a dinky little thing but still cool. Starting to think it's a 3-71, cause all the 3-53's i've seen yet has the exhaust on the right side of the motor, mine has it on the left side. http://www.jobbersinc.com/detroitd.htm, this is a 3-71 and is pretty much identical. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Dan is a pretty cool guy B) . A few years ago he parked next to me at an antique tractor show in Dover,Ohio. The wife and I camped there and he was gratefull because he knew someone would be there all night with his truck. He was in and out all weekend and if I remember it was because his wife was ill. He did tell me though that his truck gets silly mileage on the highway :D , something like 30+ MPG if I 'member correctly. It sounded great, not loud, obnoxious, or clattery, just right :) . Weird hearing an oil burner in a pick-up of that era.

Have you checked the rotation on this engine? For some applications they were set up to run backwards.

that's right, I hadn't even thought of that! Better check 'er out Joe, you might have to turn the cab around backwards and have a rear steer truck. Then you can extend the hood all the way to the rear-I mean front now-wheels. Or either backup everywhere you go at a high rate of speed. :D

I haven't even checked the rotation, done forgot about these motors turnin both directions. Thanks thermodyne for the info. After thinking about it, i figured if this motor works out, then i'll run it in the truck till i find a 6v motor to stuff in her. The motormounts can't be much different right? 6v motor would be the same length as mine. Would be cool, but who knows this one could be all i need so to speak, would be cool to upgrade over time. Actually I just need to stick with he basics at the moment. Tom i'm a slow backer-upper, i might have to get you to back this thing up at high speeds for me...lol. I really appreciate everyone's help and support. Better thn the other forums i mentioned it on.....we'll as Other Dog say's I must be off

the 6v53 is the same length and height as a 4-53 but is 40 inches wide compared to 27 so need some room for a 6v53 also a 4-53 weighs 1100 and the 6v53 weighs 1400 might just get a 4-53 for an upgrade your choice though now your 3-53 is 33 inchs long and width is 27 inchs and 35 inchs tall

just for refrence it goes as this

Dang it guys,

You got the juices flowing, I started looking around for a donor crewcab pickup to put my 4-71 generator set engine into!!!

Thermodyne B63, do you have torque numbers for each of the engines (I would suppose they would vary widely based on injectors and vintage)?

Rob, as the resident board generator expert, not sure what style of flywheel would be on a getset...much less if it is a standard bellhousing (would assume so, but you never know).

Any ideas on transmissions that would handle horsepower & torque (mine is a 1940's non-turbo version), number of gears/speeds needed to avoid huge rpm changes per shift, and if an Allison AT540 or MT653(?) would be a good idea?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott. Both of my 4-71 series powered sets have SAE#1 flywheel housings attached to them. They also do not use a standard flywheel or flexplate although an automotive flywheel could readily be swapped over.

The 6-71, and 6V-71 series engines also use SAE#1 flywheel housings. All of the larger "V" series engines use an SAE#00 housing in both the 71, and 92 series. I don't maintain anything newer than the 92's. I'm speaking solely of the Detroit powered sets there. All use an industrial flywheel of appropriate size for their respective housing(s), and are direct coupled to their alternators/generators.

Most any transmission available in a medium duty chassis would work for you but I would stay with at least a five speed due to gear spread. The 4-71's are a fine engine but make an awful lot of noise for the power delivered without a very good silenced air cleaner.

I appreciate it Thermodyne, I didn't think about it till a while later but a 6v motor would be alot heavier. Hope you can venture into something like this also Scott, I found this motor on one heck of a deal and jumped on it. I bought this motor for 100.00 dollars less than a new "rebuilt" Carb would be for my flathead 6, don't get me wrong the flattie is torquey but has 20 less horsepower, motors pretty worn & I would have to spend some serious cash to get everything right. All i really have to do to the detroit is make my motor mounts, fab up a clutch linkage, wire up an alternator, few little small odds and ends, but nothing major though. Might not be fast, but should sound cool and how many old '52 fords have you seen with a detroit? I eally appreciate the help and support from everyone here. Thermodyne It appears you've been around quite a few of these motors
