Camerota reman differentials, warranty issue

Last year I purchased and installed a reman 4.64 ratio front differential from Camerota Truck Parts who rebuilt the rear with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty. At day 362 of the 365 day warranty and 24k miles I was decelerating off the interstate with a approx. 5 ton load of mulch on and a driveline vibration and gear lash noise appeared. I pulled over and started to investigate...pulled the magnetic plug off the front rears side cover and found metal shavings stuck to it...got it home (about 10 mi from the interstate), removed the side cover and the ring gear was obliverated. So I pulled the whole carrier and dropped a new one in and sent the damaged one back for warranty. They got back to me yesterday and said they will not warranty the failure and the type of damage was due to overload.

I honestly feel there was never any overload. This is my only truck and there hasn't been a single person other than myself behind the wheel of this truck in over 6 years. I baby this truck and do not ever ram and jam as I'm the one that pays for and has to fix the damage. In the past year 90% of my work has been asphalt hauling where i rarely leave the blacktop surface and the other 10% being misc stone and soil loads, not very hard on the truck work and nothing iv done should of put any overload enough to destroy a rear.

Any opinion on if this is a fight worth battling with them? They said they will refund me for the rear all but the $800 ring and pinion they have to replace and will not reimburse any of the labor. Now if there was an overload would the only damaged part be the ring gear or was this a weak gear that let loose 3 days before Camerota Truck Parts wanted it to?

Well it wont be overloaded then and the onus would be in them to prove it was over loaded ??

They will waffle on about how they are experts and have being rebuilding diffs for years and they know whats what and what would you know

I hope you have some sort of weigh bridge tickets which will show that in fact it hasnt been over loaded and then it should be pretty clear cut

They wont just hand the new center over I feel with out a judge getting involved as it will set a precedence for everyone else good luck with it all and right down every conversation or record them on your cell phone

Well my thoughts were a universal should of went before any damage to the ring gear occurred. Obviously The power hits the universal before the diff. And my universals have I don't even know how many miles on them as they were what were on the unit when I purchased the truck 6 years ago but still tight.

Is there an agency that deals with this sorta stuff in the USA? In Aus we have consumer affairs which is too protect the consumer, or also the small claim tribunal which I belive is a court system for similar situations.

All in all, it's a lousy predicament! I'd arm yourself with knowledge from other differential specialists and try talking to them a bit more.

What they are talking about is shock load instead of over load like in weight wise.Most rebuilder are same way about shock load.You can look at it and see were it was broken from a strain.But if it has gaulded brgs or gears that were wearing prematurely then its will fit parts fault in my eyes.

huh.... most shock loaded macks ive seen have either broken axle shafts, or trans. main shaft falures. metal fillings and burs sounds like improper assembly and or preload or under/over tempered parts you might have a rockell hardness test done on the failed parts to see if they are in spec. with factory specs. if failed parts are not adequate then i say take em to court

I hate to ask the obvious, but did you escalate with their management? Usually you get the front line answer but almost every company has a flexible process if you push, sometimes even just ask. I would tend to thing a ground down ring gear would be caused by set up or bad part. You would think overloading and or shock would hit a lot of other parts first.

I had a front 3.90 rear go in my western star in May of this year and had my truck at horwiths in Northampton pa, thay gave me this same option to go with that guy you bought the rear from; but after some calling around I bought a brand new one (not reman,new) for not much more from my guy in Bellville NJ Tapco!! The way I feel about rears is like the big 4 ton stone that you beat with a 15 pound hammer for 2 weeks and just can't break it and then a guy comes along with a ball hammer and hits it one time and it splits in half!! So as the story goes; 'it wasn't the one shot from the 3 pound hammer that broke the stone but the 500 shots from the 15 pounder before you got there that broke it'!!

i wouldnt say shock load .... but extreme presure on the ring gear yes! this condition would be worsened if the front and rear drive tires are mismatched as far as circumfrance is concerned, because the tires would be traveling at diffrent speeds, but coupled by a common shaft
