12V71 in a RS700
85snowdog replied to 57 bcr's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I think this video would be appropriate now. Otherdog posted it almost 2 years ago. A very cool sounding 6-71. Sorry, not in a Mack, the audio is the important part though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klRq8D97S8c -

Thanks GEOFF, for the great info! I honestly don't know a lot about my old binder, so any info I can gather from others is great. To think, I'm getting International info on a Mack forum. What a great place ! My 5th gear is toward the seat. There is no line setting ticket in the truck anywhere. I was told if I go to a local Navistar dealer, they can get it for me. I'm not counting on it though. I can imagine the parts guy looking at me like I got two heads, when I ask for it. I am going to try though. Thanks for the discussion GEOFF. I actually tried to get something going on an International forum. But it didn't go anywhere. I have discovered so much about my Macks on BMT. I thought I could do the same on an International forum. Funny thing….I actually tried to post about the handles on an International forum. I figured It would help them. We can buy new Mack handles anywhere, I didn't know how hard it would be to buy an International handle. I thought it would help them. Anyway, I'm not very good on the computer…after about an hour, and almost throwing the computer out into a snow bank, the site wouldn't take my pics. So I figured screw it, only BMT'ers will know. I love that. Like Jim said " Good design can last a long time"

GEOFF, I guess great minds think alike. lol I have already gone at it with rubbing compound. It shines up pretty good. I want to keep as much of the original paint as I can. There isn't many trucks,or cars for that matter with 40 year old paint (that look good )in my part of the world. I would love to see pics of the Sundance. Does it have the upholstered dash? I would love to see that also! Here are some more pics for you. I think this is the Sundance paint scheme ? I always liked these and a Sundance ad from 1977 stolen from the internet

Thanks Geoff, It has a 345, same as your 1600 , 5 + 2 trans and 7 + 17 (pretty sure) axles . Runs like sewing machine. Mechanically its very good. It has new everything. The paint is original . I am going to add a stripe so it matches my R688st and put a little dump box on it. Just for show/play. I posted a thread about it when I brought it home. Here it is . http://www.bigmacktrucks.com/index.php?/topic/37421-a-return-to-my-roots/ And another pic of it

In case some don't know. I have a 1974 loadstar 1700. I have been messing around with it, and discovered the door handles are the same (almost) as my R model Macks. More investigation, I found that with a little modification to the door. My Mack R model door handle will even fit a 1955 international R180 ( a friends truck ) The only difference I could find between the loadstar handle and my Mack handle is the length of the striker and the length of the screw that goes in on a 45 deg. Both can be shortened easily. I don't know if it is hard to find International door handles , but this may make life easier for some. I found it very interesting that the same handle had been used for so long. Just with minor changes. But the same appearance from outside. The red door is International….Blue is Mack Shiny handle is new Mack……Not so shiny is International And a pic of my old binder from the fall

Al, never feel bad about posting pics of your truck. I love seeing those pics. And I know how you feel about being proud of your truck. My 1985 and 86 are still putting bread on the table. As luck would have it, your pic has answered a problem I've been scratching my head over. I have been looking at a chrome bumper for my 86 RD688 . The dimensions are all right, but it has the 2 bolts on each side, and no holes for tow hooks, the same as yours! My 86 and 88 both have 3 bolts on each side, around the hole for the tow hook. From your pic i figure some time after 1988 they changed the bumper mounts and put the tow hooks underneath. Thanks!!!! Keith -
Just a thought….. going by other post ,are the fuel filters originally behind the front tire? If they are, is it possible that the heat of the new location is doing something to the fuel. I can imagine it gets very hot there beside the rad. Could it be possible that the fuel is heating so much, that when it cools at night the filter is a 1/4 empty. Could be nonsense , just throwing ideas out. Hope you find your problem.

Galvenizing
85snowdog replied to james j neiweem's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Al, when we painted my 85R in 2008, there was a few spots around the rockers that rusted through. Not bad though. The doors were not galvanized though. The doors had rust right through around the mirrors and the bottom. The galvanizing definitely helped in my opinion. -
This is out of a Mack maintenance and lubrication handbook from 1986. I use 15w40 myself (with a bit of lucas ). But our winter temps are not consistently below 0 F . I think if you click on it, it will be clearer

My 85 R is galvanized. I was under the same impression, that 1985 was the first year. I don't know about the F models though. -
Welcome. I saw pics of your superliner in the gallery. Looks good! I would love to see more pics of the daul air cleaners.

I wouldn't be lucky enough that you would have a plastic heater/AC cover with the round vents. Like this

It just seems like a couple of years, its amazing how time flys. Its been 6 years now. Started Jan. 01/2009. I know guys that have the trucks reprogrammed, or a hidden switch that will allow them to run faster than the speed limiter. I've never had to worry about speed limiters on my old mechanical Macks. Exempt because Its manufactured before 1995, and doesn't have an ECM. 13. O. Reg. 396/08, s. 1. R Model Hood Scoops?
85snowdog replied to Lmackattack's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I wasn't sure if some might find this interesting. This is a pic of the dash valve for the under hood air intake. Normal, draws air from the top of the air cleaner. Rain or snow, draws air from under the hood. -
Wobblin, I think thomastractorsvc has you pointed in the right direction. The paints may not be compatible. You also have to make sure there is no trace of oils or wax. The paint will react to that also. Before you paint ,wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth. You've done such a good job so far it would be a shame to not have the green turn out good also.
