  1. lucky that train was not going fast. I wonder sometimes what people are thinking when driving!!!!!!!!!! I look both ways when walking across a hallway at work LOL how do people forget todo it over a RR track??? I beleve The last big boy moved under her own power wsa back in the late 50s early 60s soon after there reteriment. I think there is a UP challenger that is in operation for yerly shows?
  2. the centennial was an empressive diesel engine but not practical. I am guessing thats why it and the Big Boys were retired and we never saw another example like them again. I heard the Centennials had drive shaft problems between both engines? It is sad that the 800 sieres is gone along with the whole R family. Last summer I passed up a heavy haul company on eastbound I-80 just past salt lake city. On the low boy was 3 axel RD or DM800 with huge tires and a fancy paint job. I chatted with the driver for a few miles as we pulled over the hill and he said it was going to move a genarator. and some mineing stuff. he was a driver for both the pete lowboy rig and mack 800. he said if the mack could go faster than 40 MPH he would pull the pete on the lowboy and drive the MACK
  3. Moving one of North Americas largest steam Locomotive to a new site. its a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy . Engine weight is 762,000lb tender is 428,000lb Trent
  4. I have seen a few of those KW with the engine under the single seat cab. the cab was off centered werid looking truck??
  5. Gret vid larry . I cant wait to get mine out on the road again. its been to long!! I remember I could drive it like a 5 speed when bob tailing around. but its been 3 years sence I got to use both sticks!!!!
  6. My companys 440 V8 never gets hot but we dont have the hills to pull by me. It has a pyro gauge and it holds around 1100 if we do find a hill to climb. I find with most diesel engines I have driven if it starts to gets hot I can down shift to get the rpms up t 2100 or so and it will allow the fan to keep the engine cool. Only on long pulls out west have I ever had to pull over and let it cool for a few. One thing I never liked about the 6 speed trans behind maxidynes. was that the engine lugs when pulling the BIG hills and will start to get hot quickly, then the fan has a hard time trying to supply the needed air flow thry the rad to keep cool. 7. I liked the older ones for there apperace but thats about it. I drove a Rental century class last year and it rode very nice but had no balls at all. dont like the styling at all now. In my opinion it is just a cheep truck that has no real appeal to owner operaters.
  8. Look like some hevey speced axels on those granites. That old butterfly hood R has a good size load of sand!! would never get away with that here in IL.!! Merry Christmas and Please get home safe!! Thanks for doing a great job over there.
  9. Hi Joe I did a truck pull last summer at the local Lake county fairgrounds with my RS700L. It was tons of fun (pun intended) A friend of mine on this board (bulldogbred) lives near me and he turned me on to the truck pulling. He has a RS700L with a 300+ with a 12 speed. he can pull better than me with my little 6 speed. A bunch of the local Dump trucks show up to compete. Northern IL Mack is also there with a few of there dogs. I have never been to any other pull events but would love to get some info about your truck. Maybee this winter I can take the my dog out for a stroll down by you and see this monster rig you have. let me know Trent
  10. Hello Joe I Live in Fox lake, work M-F in Lincolnshire, and on weekends I drive a dump truck allover chicago land aera. I see a few black cruise liners hauling tankers near my house but there from WI lots of superliners still left to bee seen in Chicago !!!!
  11. some times it almost seams more reasonable to spend the $5000 on a whole truck than just the motor. I have seen some "junk" trucks with V8s in them for pretty cheep. they likely are pretty ruff on the outside but atleast you get all the other parts needed with a E9. I am waiting for my bosses superliner with a 440 HP E9 to die, he does not think he will rebuild it because of the cost and age of the truck. I talked with him about buying the truck when he wants to retire it so that I can save it. Trent
  12. I have a 1978 285 HP tip turbine. with a 2 stick 6 speed. engine code ETAY676 Maxidyne 283HP@2100RPM 1080 ftlb @1020RPM the ETAY673 and ETAZ673 I belive were econodynes and rated to 315HP 1080ftlbs. They were recomended to use with gearboxes with 9 + speeds I think the 237 was a ENDT675 with 900 ftlbs. look on the pass side of the engine for a tag with engine code info
  13. thanks for the info. I thought there was a conversion kit but just my luck that its no longer made. If thats the case, how are the rebuild kits for these air motors? I have never rebuilt one and would hate to go thru the trouble rebuilding one to find it works just the same. I have driven some R models that the air wipers work great and then some R's (like mine) that turn on and stick on the first cycle. Trent
  14. Any one ever switched the air motor out for electric. I think the air is cool but it does not work as nicely as the electric. I was thinking about geting 2 electric motors, one for the B the other for the R. How easy is the swap? is it a direct replacement using the same mounting holes? Besides the elictrical hook up what diffrence will there be? Trent
  15. Great looking 700 you have. looks like you cleand her up under the hood also. whats the next plan(s) for it. Trent
  16. Great looking rig. Im shure it will be a show stopper one day??what is the reason that some log trucks carried the unloaded trailer on the rear of the tractor? was it to save the tires,or help with traction?? always wondered
  17. Nothing fancy but thought I would show off my fabed up bared 5th wheel. I installed the Bar over the weekend with the help of a good weilder friend. The th wheel is a Fontane no slack intended for "standard" freight hauling. Its not a high mount wheel so I had to make a few adjustments to get the tube to fit under the wheel and still allow clearance for the king pin to pass over. We got plenty of a good contact surface/weld under the wheel and on the top plate, She wont budge.
  18. I think that the newer trucks can and will last longer (milage wise)because the development and engineering that goes into the drive train allows the componets to last longer. Macks were known for reliability in the off road use where most trucks would fall apart. with todays trucks I see big lack of styling but the major componets seem to hold up for the most part. Dont get me wrong the plastic junk they use on trucks today looks like crap but it wont rust. In my opinion Trucks of today are made for disposal after they wear out so In that case I dont see them lasting as long in the public eye. New rigs also dont have that magic that the old trucks have. I know some diffrent tricks on my old macks that make them perform, drive better. With the new trucks I dont find these tricks that make me smile. just my .02
  19. Volvo never really got to mess around with R/RD etc...models, only thing I can think of that volvo did was ending the production of Rs in vavor of the new granite, vision,CH models etc... The only R models I did not like were the ones euiped with low RPM engines. they never seamed to pull as well?? but they are all Damm tuff trucks so I hope your back is healthy LOL Trent
  20. I saw that in his sales pitch LOL. I did not think it was used in convoy as I think you said it was wrecked back in 88?. Dan,any chance you can convince the owner of the wrecked convoy rig to sell it? I know we could find a good home for it.
  21. I think the price is a little high. Just my opinion. I have no clue what those trailers cost so it may be a fair price and I just dont know?? I got lucky when I found My RS as it was a over the road truck its whole life and was in great shape when I found it. I got it for 3k and drove it 500 miles to my house with no dramas. Also check Truckpaper.com for some old macks. I know there are 3 or 4 long hood R models on there right now. Trent
  22. I have listen to ,Drive By Truckers on the radio. good band im my opinion
  23. if she can still pull the hills you should be fine. GA has some good country roads with steep hills. I have seen many old macks working down there so I dont see why it wont make you some $$$. You could use it as a on site truck and skip out on the cost of plates ?? I think some of the 6 wheelers use tri axels down there also???
  24. I saw the e-bay listing last week. I think it was being sold out of the Chicago aera. If you can get anyinfo about the person selling it I could go look at it and give you some more insite on the condition. just an offer Trent
