  1. Well as with the bottom end on the grey engine they are pretty tough if you have looked after the oil and the clutch adjustment ! I would leave it alone we have a fair few high milers here and any we have had apart usually for other reasons looked fine bearing Wise! As Joe stated its not a slam dunk to pull the pan and look like a gray engine! AS 58 said oil analysis is a good cheap check! Just my opinion!

  3. Don't think your allowed to like things twice or three times here ! However the above statement is Soooo true! The average clutch {job here} for the I shift M drive is By the time the dust settles close to ten grand flywheel clutch actuator s and rigging all should be replaced or it could screw you over down the road ! To top it off they program the trans to start off normally in 4th gear this tends to wear the clutch out even faster depending on the trucks job ! Just a note to anyone buying these do your self a favor and have your dealer program the trans to start out in a lower gear It can be done the option is there just got to do it! Clutches ARE NOT PART OF WARRANTY after a year or so, also warranty DOES NOT PAY FOR DOWN TIME! So if your temped to buy an auto trans be sure to buy extended warranty! As with ALL Manufacturers you should anyway as the rest of the truck is susceptible to emission issues anyway ! And quite honestly Big V / Mack ain't the only Guilty party here You can Bet Everybody has the same Agenda!

  8. Yup All relative ! If you have a restriction on the muffler side its the same result as a boost leak not enough air flow in Or out of the engine! for the most part!

  14. Sounds to be working the way it should ! Your observations are What I would expect The exhaust temp going up indicates to me that u have reached the point where the turbo is not producing ENOUGH air for the fuel being feed to cyls taking half a gear is the right thing to do ! if the temp climb is gradual everything is good But If the temp climb is relatively fast then you may have a boost leak! At this point you should see smoke behind you even when you have your foot right in it! Just my opinion
  15. Yup I agree! I too used to be a Mack guy ,Still am unfortunately in Body and work only now ! The spirit left in 2002 ! How ever I wouldn't be still working if it weren't for the current rescheme! That's the only upside! The rest is A downer! The industry in general is a disappointment! Every manufacture for the most part is on the same Path! Quality is not on the agenda!
  16. The above statement is so True! I am still working at a Mack dealer and over the last 30 /40 years I have had and seen the 18 speed Mack trans rear section off more than a few times! That being said It is something most shops aren't set up to do so we get to see the short comings more often! But viewing it from the current situation ! The Volvo people Are Trying Real Hard to Bury the Past They are making it Virtually impossible to repair the older Mack stuff They want you to By a New Mack Truck ! With All Volvo Parts! older Parts May be available But Priced out of Reach! The fuller as mentioned Is a Universal Trans Time Tested ! Superior in some ways because of its long run and popularity !

I also have a question is it throwing up any codes Check engine light? the other thing is pull down the kick panel on the passenger side an check the VECU plug depending on how its mounted and your climate a windshield leak can cause issues like this There! Clean and check the engine ground below the starter before you do to much searching!
  20. So this comment holds some weight being as you had a yoke failure to begin with you should check the lifters !on the failed yoke cyl! That being said the fact that the miss seems to jump around sort of indicates the computer is possibly trying to compensate for irregularity in engine rpm smoothness not sure on this! But I have been personally involved in chasing this issue several times wasting time To no avail ! My advice is After you check the lifter! if the engine is only doing this at Idle and is not effecting performance, Leave the dam thing alone and drive it! Its an annoyance thing only! Not an indication of a failure of any sort! Just an opinion
  21. The RB is the set back front axle Version of The RD Both Very reliable Robust units Why? They were given those letters is Any ones Guess but That is what is indicated by there prefixes! The 427 is A good engine fairly reliable !The numbers in the prefix also can indicate the truck could be a single axle or tandem 612 indicates a single axle These are just some of the indicators of what these model numbers mean theres people here that know alot more than my self on this subject but you get the idea!
  22. They when to a ceramic roller and spring loaded push tubes that seemed to help lots ! How ever they did not do it to all engines!
