GM had a 702 V12 (two 351 V6's on one block)

Don't forget the 837 CID V8 of the same family. I think it and along with the 351 and 478 Magnum version of the V6s were also available as Toroflow diesels.

The gas burning semis of the time probably moved the same loads as the diesels did albeit slightly slower. Back then the weights were probably overall less than today and the world moved slower than it does today. I think back then it was probably acceptable and "normal" to have semis pulling steep hills at 10 or 15 mph.

I just cant think of a gas (petrol) powered semi truck. What was the gas mileage like? Im sure it was smooth to drive but would it have the same  power as a diesel of the same size? Iv never seen one over here,in fact Iv never even heard talk of one here. There were small trucks of about 12 tons gross here years ago.Bedford was the only one I can think of selling them but not semis....

My dad had a White Mustang single axle tractor with a gas engine, he said it got 2 mpg. It was a former Coca-Cola truck.

I didn't forget the V8 but don't think it was ever put in trucks, correct me if I am wrong. The V6's were all I came across.

My memory isn't what it used to be, may be it was the V-8 toilet bowl wasn't put in trucks (diesel).

Otherwise, why would the 702 V-12 exist, if there was a larger V-8?

By the time GMC's V-6's came out larger gas semi's were on the wain. GMC already had the 503 inline gasser.

Keep in mind, that when gassers were big, we didn't have the Interstate system yet built. There were some sections and some Tpk's but a lot was old US routes that went through towns, and speed was slower. You weren't doing 70 Mph on US 6 or US 30.

That reminds me of the late Mike Snead, "jig saw".  He had a green and white Transtar of his own leased to H.H.Moore before he started driving one of H.H's trucks, had a 318 and a 10 speed in it. We were hauling wood chips from Ivy, VA. to Covington for Westvaco and jig Saw's uncle would ride with him sometimes. They'd climb Afton Mountain on 64 just a little bit faster that you could walk, and both of them would be holding the door open with their foot because it was so hot. That truck was weak even for a 318.

Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999.
