Larry I remember back in the dark ages when I first started at the place that ran all R's and F models and one or two had the three filters. My 260 hp was made in 1980 and it had a cartridge filter I swapped it out for the filter setup off a 285 hp and a little bigger pan off another engine that was setting in the junk yard the junkers put a big hole in the oil pan when they pulled the engine that 300 should do you very well I drove an R with a 285 hp that I in chassis over hauled and it did pretty good in that triaxle dump

WTF.....

So I pull a liner kit out and start to inspect the pieces (liner, piston, rings, pin).  I take it over to the block to test fit liner.  It slips right down into block!!!  😲😲😲😲😲

Apparently they sold me std OD liners.  🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦

Guess that is why I got that itchy feeling when a "new guy" took my order.  Yup, got screwed over.  The box is marked "no return if open".  They better!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone decipher the part number?  It isn't at +.020 liner that's for sure.

Ugh ...time for a phone call monday morning.  Dammit anyway.

Ya, now I will find out .020 is NLA.....  Because he looked up the wrong part.  He said he was only there a few months and was a cumapart guy.  He was supposed to check with his boss, but someone screwed up.  Not me.

Good news.  Local Mack says full kits are available in .020 liners.

Pt number 215SB196CP2

$3355 cash over the counter.

Now I will pull the last 5 liners and confirm before ordering.

So, this part number is incorrect.  I need to confirm what brgs as I told him the crank was std.

I find it seems the guys that really knew the parts they were selling are long gone and most of the parts pushers don't have a clue and don't care that are at the counters now but one number wrong can be a big problem I remember a guy at Cleveland Bros that ordered a part for a tractor in the dirt shop and got in a track frame for a d-9

They can't  work with out a computer! and vin and even then ................. It doesn't help that the Volvo parts system takes a PHD to run it! the Mack parts system Made most parts guys look like wizards ! The letters  in the part number gave you a guide to the parts location! Now is just a number! The system sucks! A parts guy now needs to have a good back ground in puters  and numbers!

Just ask the Heinz hes had a good mix of hands on!

So true fjh.  When Mack went WID numbers, the whole parts room was turned upside down.  Our shop allowed some of us mechanicsnin the parts room with a parts guy, and many parts were grouped together as they related to each other.  For example 'AX' was bolts. I have forgotten a lot, so i dont have many examples. Sorry Freightrain, I felt compelled to divert a bit.

Did you download the KSA&A Book ? It is very helpful..
