kscarbel2
Gary Mahan has a wonderful collection. But his arrogant demeanor turned me off each time we had an interaction.

He has become a good friend and has quite often proven to be one of the gang. 3 Quote Interested in Old Trucks? yarnall
Beautiful trucks. I would have loved to have gone but I took a couple fire trucks in my town's 150 anniversary parade. While I don't know Gary well he has always been nice to me. I am going to his place next week to buy some parts for my AC. It would suspect that some people take my social awkwardness as arrogance but that is not my intent. Mike.
41chevy
And yet when I Met him he was gracious and accommodating. Gave me one of his men to help me measure and photograph his AC/Christie, took me on the grand tour and talked about my piddly few trucks. Even remembered my name at his last invite only event. Must have caught him on an off day? Popular Post 57 bcr
You lucky dog, you! Gary's collection is on my bucket list of places to see. I first met him was at the 1993 ATHS Convention in Milwaukee,Wi. I asked him where the big water truck was at. He laughed and said,"It takes an act of Congress just to get it to Macungie!" Talked to him at Macungie several times. Always been a decent guy to me. This hobby has more good in it than bad,I've found. Everybody knows the people whose reputation isn't on the level, and seems to stay away from them. Gary has always been nothing more than a great person to me, he is always willing to help with any question and share any knowledge he has, he personally will go out of his way to help find parts I have needed. He has had so many parts cast just for these trucks and he is nice enough let others buy them, at a reasonable cost, one I'm sure barely covers the cost of production. Sometimes people forget there is cost associated with having molds made and cast, just like there is a cost associated with his guys taking parts off to sell as well. He certainly does not need the money to do this, he does it for the same passion we all have, to see these trucks survive into another generation. He has a quiet demeanor, and perhaps that is what some people may be confusing for arrogance. I certainly don't think he is arrogant in the slightest, he is a great person! I have had conversations about trucks and in life in general with him and always a great guy! So maybe when you talk to him again look at it in a different light, as a quiet guy, not to be confused with arrogance, who is doing this not for financial gain but for all of to enjoy and to pass on. Then perhaps you will see him in a different light as myself and others have seen him!
Popular Post yarnall
I went over the Mahan's today and bought a radiator tank for my AC. I had posted several want adds and made several calls with no luck. I was refered to Gary who said he didn't like to sell them but he would. My father went along. We got the grand tour. When we were there last he only had 2 buildings. Now he has 5. It was amazing. He could not have been nicer.
jackb61sx
I myself have had nothing but good interactions when I have been to his place several times. Our last visit there last fall with my father who was in search of a winch to mount on our B-Model, Gary put him in a cart and off they went and 45 min later they returned and I owned a 50 ton winch for the truck. Gary did the whole deal on a hand shake and we left and sent Gary the balance on the winch the next day. Any time I go there he is very gracious and personable with us,,,,,Just my dealings.
steelman
It has been my experience over the years that you generally find what you are looking for, and that includes attitudes! Most everyone connected with this hobby has been friendly and helpful.

We are speaking of a man who allows people into his private shrine, climbs over piles of unobtainable parts to find us fellow collectors parts that we would otherwise be screwed without. Keep in mind he is in his seventies and is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He isn't doing this for money, he is doing it to genuinely help people. After you get what you came for, he gives you a tour of the most extensive collection of Mack trucks in the world, and usually brings you down to Basking Ridge center to take you out to lunch. He has taken the time not only to show me his collection, but also to see his other business ventures. To me, this isn't arrogance, it is enlightenment.

I wish to apologize for my negative comment about Mr. Mahan.
