  1. That is a vicious fluid fan drive or fan clutch. Whenever you start cold the fan runs for a couple of seconds before the fluid can be pumped back to the reservoir and the fan disengages. There's really no way to control when the kick on and you kinda just have to live with it. All Macks from the 80s and 90s that Ive seen use this type of clutch. Been meaning to ask has anyone ever replaced the vicious clutch for an air operated one? To me that would be a nice upgrade.
  2. How do you get coal these days? Is it delivered by truck like a propane service would be? does your house have a working coal chute? Some of the really old buildings around here still have coal chutes but not in use anymore. Coal is very hard to come by in Kansas.
  3. Whoah what kinda pelt is that! -10 at night is the coldest it got here but the wind around here is the worst part. Large stock tank is about froze all the way down and the small mineral tub tanks I use in the winter froze completely solid with a couple of the real cold nights. My two cows stayed under there lean-to for the majority of the cold snap. My chickens comb's got a bit of frostbite
  4. As a last result you may have to take it out and measure inlet diameter, turbine diameter, and exhaust housing diameter to find a similar turbo. It could have been ordered from a catalog that's long gone by now. Do you want to go back to a stock turbo or do you want to find whatever turbo is on there?
  5. Do you use that in Mack rears too?
  6. Glad this form exists to document Mh's. Seems they've about gone extinct, either got loaded on a boat and shipped out or there owners don't take them out anymore. Here is/was ours still working at my uncles.
  7. Now that its a warm 16 degree's here I guess it's time to go do something. Been reading about the old York 210 compressors and might go look for one in our junk piles.
  8. Hopefully somewhere good. I've heard talks about this one in my local area being sent to a pediatricians clinic's playground and never running again... Maybe Im a bit of a scrooge here but please don't do that!
  9. Neighbor has one in his Versatile but never pulls anything but a grain cart. Might be because of an odd hydrostatic trans that they did for a few years too. Miss our old 855 Versatile with the 855 cummins in it. Wouldn't have to rev it out like the John Deere that replaced it
  10. Man whatever happened to this global warming thing? I thought I would be growing palm tree's by now It won't get above freezing here until Sunday.
  11. its -3 and windy this morning. Broke the ice for the cow and yep I'm done for the day
  12. Even has a steering knob so you could free up an extra hand...
  13. Thats such a cool lookin turbocharger! I miss when they used to be mechanical marvels that people took pride on having. Now they're tucked away and a pain. More of an emissions component than anything. And best yet if you changed your oil and didn't abuse them they lasted the life of the engine. Foreign concept I know
  14. If one gets into your house then a mandatory vacation will be in order. You wouldn't be able to sleep with the racket they make Ive never seen anything eat one, not even our chickens will touch em.
  15. I really hate to add to the off topic fire but I don't even use our chainsaw anymore. Milwaukee Sawzall is the way to go. No bar oil, no gas just plug it in and go. New blades are cheeper than new bars and bar oil. Of course there aren't any big tree's here in Kansas, a good axeman should be able to clear the county in an hour.
  16. To me those look more like a marker light of sorts than a headlight, and why would they be all the way back by the radiator? Are these lights even electric or are they acetylene or some sort of oil lamp?
  17. No pictures at the moment but I have a low quality video of it firing up: And that makes sense about them being painted red. Wonder if that was done at the IH assembly or the Cat factory.
  18. Ours is a 1970 and its painted Red. Someone somewhere told me that the last 1693's that went into trucks were painted red but I couldn't tell you if that's right or not.
  19. Purple people eaters they called em. Seemed like real good engines I wonder what could have happened. They had a pretty large engine plant for them. Our gleaner combine's had allis engines and we never had any problems with em, plenty of power for an L2.
  20. Our e6 350 could whip our cat 1693. The reason they couldn't have Jake breaks is because they were dual overhead cam with the cams acting on the valves with no rocker arms. Fuel consumption is terrible but they're reliable and torque monsters. Some form post said that no one still runs 1693's anymore but our's is still used every year for harvest.
  21. Nah. We have a 1693 in a IH transtar and a 3208 in an RV but have never done anything major to them. Adept Ape on YouTube the is the cat guy I learned all my information from
  22. 1978-1982 was the production years and I think they switched to chassis mounted intercoolers in 1980 or 1981?? (Not sure) The intake manifold inlet was pointing straight up instead of angled a bit for an intercooler but all mack straight 6's manifold inlets point straight up so forget that.
  23. The tractor above sold for a good price for only having 300 hours. Seems to me like the olds stuffs values keep going up while the new stuffs going down.
  24. It has the same stroke as a 3406 cat but a tad smaller bore. Doesn't look like it has a spacer plate like the cats. I'd say it wouldn't make as good of power with the intake setup the way it is, probably were developing a tip turbine intercooler system as to why the intake is pointing straight up.
  25. Thats an average speed of about 10mph which I can see it being a dump truck and all but I'd like to see 30-40 for an on highway truck. As long as the motor looks pretty clean (the seals aren't blown out) and its not burning too much oil I wouldn't be concerned. We always dumped the airbags whenever we would unload with our Mack, but that was because they leaked a bit and when sitting in line with lots on stop and go break application the air compressor couldn't keep up at idle. Dad got stuck on the scales one time and had to wait for the air to come back up. What would be another reason to dump the airbags when dumping? I wouldn't recommend shifting with the Jake brakes either. If you're in a hurry you're in the wrong rig.
