  1. remember that stuff back in the day of CORK gaskets. it held well : but you sure did not appreciate it if you were on the clean the valve covers next time. rubber gaskets of today I.ve always used silicone sealer ;;;; light film only!!! what I have been doing {for years} is to take a small center punch and put numerous divets in the base of the valve cover first. they act as "holders" for the rubber gasket.
  2. backing to spreader box is an easy way for reversing an engine ;;; basically at idle, in reverse ; tap the box tooo hard is same as backing to a loading dock. slow speed/idle low and the tap . I know my memory is fading . I don't remember a '78 Mack with a 5x5 aux.
  3. technically it's not the pump needing adjustment from it's own fault. like the distributor setting ; adjustment of the pump is to compensate for all the rest of the engine wear and tear. front eng drive train has a number of gears between crank and inj pump gear. and we ALL know with age parts wear out.
  4. any one know what became of the two massive cranes that were custom built for Marino crane years back??? one went to California to unload barges for a major project; another to Texas? I went to Middletown talked briefly to Mr. Marino as the first crane (built in modular format); could be built on site in days not weeks was on display. have the brochures some where still -I hope . crane had something like 700ft mast capable of 100 ton lift .all pins stayed in place on cradles .
  5. can't help but wonder :::HOW = on a single axle.
  6. bet he paid close attention on the right hand turns !!LOL
  7. easy to tell it was a strong union company for back in the day ;;; roof mounted kysor AC, LOL. noticed an O&G 81 ON trailer going east 84 while back. back frame rails should have roller mounted for winch cable to hoist trailer up.
  8. somewhere in one of the many boxes from moving I've still have the fruehauf 1/25th scale trailer dump built /painted gold /hooked to the R600 resembling actual truck owned by Stone construction ;southbury Ct. I was honored to meet Brian Krois (author of connecticut construction trucks) at a diner recently . real nice guy. I busted him about volume two ; he laughed. was on his way to Bethlehem to see Matt P.
  9. American pump ;after SUPER CLEAN top of pump . remove hold down nut -- 1 1/4 wrench ;pull barrel and needle valve. replace barrel /hold down nut. helper starts the engine turning while watching flywheel marks(degrees). fuel stops flowing from pump ; it's on mark. spill timing complete. for the Robert bosh I remember having a tool for barrel alignment. basically a 3-4 in slotted bar which clamped to #1 cyl also slotted end went over cly2 and three
  10. American or Robert bosh ? missed description
  11. fine spline 2 1/2 --2 5/8 th ??? . same principle as a wheel double nut. loosen the lock nut turn other to lengthen /shorten distance from throw out to fingers. lipe was the common of that style.
  12. road call side of the road in rain/snow you will find out the hammer/screwdriver option works very well' ;;experience talking.
  13. it's called a secondary alignment adjusting combo tool ; not a hammer and screwdriver.... geesh
  14. weather doesn't cooperate and motivation is low !! take a mounted DM tire and roll it up the street then back again;; rain or not!! cost less then gym and results way better. like the "farm boys" carrying the 100lb bales of hay across the field. 2025 is ten yrs since open heart surgery (2015) .heart DR said to me "don't come back here after retirement (2017) 20 lbs heavier, I'm10lbs over ;have put off going back for check up ;;suppose to go back 4 yrs ago. retirement is a challenge in many ways. days go by and the pounds add on. as the parts get older repairs are more difficult (experience talking!!). i'm making an appointment very soon with DR. ; not Dr it will be funeral director.
  15. they must have put the duct tape on it early since they know it's going to fall apart shortly after running down the road. no tape on the true MACK LTLSW
  16. If the rims are going to get a paint job, pulling them off separate with a good hand truck works; also saves the back from the dismount /removal by hand. floor crane will easily handle the drum spoke assembly. reinstall without the wheels /tires may lessen chance of damaging new seal. painting hubs easier without rims on.
  17. at least this shows the "ole man" memory NOT all wrong. earlier post mentioned , green/white with produce decal ; also the AMT/MATCHBOX. I'm thinking first version was only AMT possibly. didn't get to involved in models which weren't Mack.
  18. the R S orL700L has always been a favorite of mine. Yours is pure class with the budds on front daytons on rear ; also the practical single stack . a working truck in perfect form (for me).
  19. you won't be alone with the "rain outside "will be possibly doing a long a waited model build myself. at least at the other rent I could do mechanic work; having even a place to paint models, did some small model painting in basement recently == boy did I hear about the smell. here don't have anywhere to do that work; and it's ONLY three times the rent!! NO wasn't my idea to move
  20. at this point since I don't own one; so be it. however I don't see in the book where it states 15/ 40 only10//40 which in the day before all the synthetic was closer to hyd oil which comes closer to ATF , ALSO no where on the page is it stating ALSO change the PS filter ;possibly indicating by then 10/40 was standard leaving those few old people stuck in their ways of using ATF.
  21. only documentation available is from the "book" called old school. sorry
  22. in cases where the pitman don't remove too easy even having the puller on it; sit-in cab and work steering wheel back and forth ::: engine off of course. it's been known to be helpful ;; the twisting motion . better then beating the arm with a hammer. total removal of the set screw (it's a long bast- - -d) is better so it;s not in the way of puller jaws. a good bearing puller installed first behind the arm will give more area for jaw puller. never know it may slide off.
  23. unofficially it has been done where the filter is removed from reservoir when changing over, new systems don't have filters anymore (like alot of cutbacks) . still have a sealed system; one less item to relace on PM's
  24. belt driven "66 most likely came through with ATF; doesn't mean you can't change over to 15-40; only concern from this old man is whether or not the 15-40 may be too heavy for the filter slowing down the flow giving impression there's a PS problem?? far as the pitman arm removal ::: don't forget to back off/ remove the allen set screw(s) on back side of arm. a decent jaw puller will work along with slight tap on top/bottom of arm.
