  1. you got the outer nuts off which would indicated going right direction of thread ; not tightening inners due to left/right hand . depending on how much you cut with die grinder . which is #1 method for broken removal. two ways which have proven successful :: 1- install the outer nut back on close to wheel and weld it to inner deep socket /impact try removal 2- drill number of small holes in broken inner nut close to rim . then the pipe wrench. another reply just came in ; possible same.
  2. far as the post being opposite in box left vs right could be just how they were installed. important issue is they are HOOKED up the SAME ! negative ground all neg post are ground , grounds from alt to block to frame should be correct. the other ground wire to frame I go with idea it's wrong. do you know history of this unit terms of who did what and when, ? new alternator ? this just started or been since ??? was worked on .
  3. NO ;rotate to put crank journal at lowest point. bottom plate was slotted on threaded rod. slanted going in liner leveled out at bottom. covered most of liner bottom. adjustable three legged top. didn't get involved with Mack wet liners.only stand out was the experimental 866 in the FL700. started at Baskin with the DD 8v's , wet liners were the thing. didn't understand how a small o-ring did the job! LOL
  4. old school then : had O T C hyd liner remove/ install kit . so many fun things I had.
  5. when you say "just two wires coming out" both to ground ; are they both on same terminal or on two separate post ? same term ok. missing power wire to alt. two wires on separate terminals - back to following wires.
  6. How is the truck set up with the batteries? ==positive post to ground or negative post? did you check wires from the starter looking for a possible burnt wire which may have been power source alt/starter chafed through was thought to be a ground then connected to chassis. alternator have a terminal marked + ? run temp new wire from alt to starter?
  7. glad to see the topic interrupted by "wet/dry" liners !! almost got tempted to ask .NOW which one is this engine dealing with?? dry with honing the sleeve may be removed a number of times : to obtain a perfect fit.all 6 - could be involved. rent/borrow a tool ?
  8. can I get a AMEN from the big happy BMT crew. won't comment on this topic just sit back smile and remember those days of mechanics being fun.
  9. they along with many other fleets were a common sight on east coast. building a set of the first gear B model fleets from new England ; that was one I had.
  10. forgot to ask:: why was the steering box removed in first place ??; output seal leaking ???
  11. Bye Bye "vacation"😱, look at the bright side: you'll be so busy in 6 months there will be no slack time for TV/ lazy days. you will be in such great shape ; won't need the gym. why do you think I go to the farm 25 miles away daily. the better half only works one day a week !!!LOL at least on the farm there is peace and QUITE
  12. glad you got balancer off safely. the rotating by hand is usually attempted when engine in chassis / radiator there or not: space limited . engine on floor (improperly blocked ) could be dangerous when hand rotation of damper done. block roll over . depending how bad those couple of wallops are , could effect balancer function.
  13. I must be old !!LOL , I remember seeing these as daily drivers going down highways. DM600 in picture was a new upgrade for Beard.
  14. Had the calendar. picture sure cost Mack in the end. besides the green/yellow paint scheme & dual steer which at the time was new feature due to weight laws in CT; the body supports in Hi-Ho letters drew lot of attention. possibly why these were pictured ,not O&G in calendar
  15. really depends on the conditions how. engine in frame with radiator in front limiting work area ? in frame no radiator? engine out ? important issue is DO NOT beat the balancer. with bolts removed ; had to make sure I put that in. don't laugh someone said " you didn't tell me take out the bolts!" good penetrating spray /& emery -sand paper ; clean off hub center . I've been able to rotate by hand the balancer work it forward off hub.(this is when radiator still in place. ) rail it with a hammer and the balancer won't balance any more.
  16. also take in to consideration the fact it's a fire truck not a OTR unit. fire call goes in -the boots go on- arrive at the fire scene which is NOT like being a state worker who sits in the truck all day; Fireman is OUTSIDE to operate the controls. emergency over = truck back to fire house (time short) not 2hr drive. heater an option with legitimate reasons .. when new of course as a new restore heater/ canvas cab a must, nice progress also.
  17. failing memory some what correct; seems the 315 hp was tip turbine without water , air only. ??? things like hp/ boost/ and all the NEW computer stuff wasn't paid too much attention then. it was new ;mechanics looked at it and walked away. needed repair ; figure how to fix it. didn't have U tube to answer questions.
  18. possibly durability, less prone to external damage from debris ;let the radiator take the hit. less inventory in parts .
  19. I don't know if Ozzie Bartlett = service foreman/manager at waterbury Mack is still with us or not. there was one knowledgeable person. I had/have the highest respect for that man still today.
  20. Dave must have gray hair by now!!! He started at the Waterbury location WAY back then. on rare occasion I have gone by the Hartford dealer and wanted to stop and say hi to him, staying 5 more minutes in that city put an end to the visit. think he goes to jimmy's diner in watertown for breakfast on saturdays.
  21. so did I' left shortly after Lenny M bought Waterbury location.
  22. you made it through the day ; which counts out the statement "didn't get anything done today". also took care of other appointments. I'd say you got a lot done today. do what you can while you can. I have a square baler all apart at the moment and had to cut the work day short due to some issues. back tomorrow ??
  23. time for pressure washer to make accurate diagnostic before a "ripe and tear" project being new to the unit ;; only my thoughts. never cared for taking things apart where dirt is . possibly due to starting at Mack when 17 yrs old as an "assistant apprentice mechanics helper" put me behind the controls of a steam cleaner for many hrs, clean it /run it and make darn sure where the leak is. layers of dirt also act as a "winter coat on housings making internal temps higher. cleanlyness is goddlyness.
  24. back then I had an international backhoe which made the project a tad easier, down pressure from front bucket did it every time. today no more backhoe or ambition. have been the route of recip saw and cut the tire.
