  1. Isuzu makes a bulletproof product,I have a92 pu  with 170k .I've owned 100 cars and trucks, not one comes close in build quality to this 1200dollar pu! That includes studebakers,50's buicks and other cars known for build quality. When I was in the "hotshot" business one of my fellow contractors had an Isuzu c.o.e.His dad worked for  gm's Packard elec.in warren oh,so he had to put GMC emblems on it to park at home! On the Allison tranny subject,is that transmission a full auto.? or is it a semi auto? There have been for several yrs 9 and10 spd r.r. based semi auto trannys, the

Other dog,you went thru Sharon pa and didn't stop at Quaker steak and ale? Lol also your cross bronx comment, reminded me of the time I was on that hallowed highway with 8000 lb in the trl.,and my emergency side gladhand  came off! instant lane change! from that day forward I duct taped my glad hands on that road! Did I say road?!

  2. It is said to be controlled by the"mob" wouldn't bet against it! Starting in the late 80's the landfills in NYC were full, At that time they were "exporting" bailed garbage to landfills in pretty rural areas of  E Ohio, and Va.One of our o/o  sold his "hotshot" rig and bought two "Large Car" Freightliners and 53ft alum. spread axles.A lot of guys bought high dollar "walking floor" trailers. Those burnt rigs are either walking floor or dumps, can't see enough of them to tell.I'd bet the biggest steak in Florida. Those guys "cut the rates" hence the burnt equip!! As soon as my friend and those who bought the walking floors in the 80's and 90's locked themselves into those big payments, the brokers "cut the rates" The walking floor guys were really screwed,as you contractors know they can only haul certain commodities! Predictably all they could do was haul Fast and heavy!!You Pa guys who are old  enough will remember Uncle Miltie shapp and "operation trashnet"In addition to the aforementioned problems, guys were hauling baled garbage in reefers, then hauling food without washing the trls. So my pal got busted, both rigs on I 80.Are ya' ready 90k gross, speeding of course, logbook that were a museum exhibit!! The fines were like the national debt! As if all that weren't enough the folks in the little towns where the garbage was going were pissed, began picketing the landfills(wouldn't you!).I was running across 80 every wk. To new England and the Bronx with insulation. There was at least one garbage wagon rolled over each trip!

  3. Just hit me,how the hell do you ban assault trucks?if they're talking about the stroke who drove into the crowd in France, yeah, if he knew it was illegal to drive into a crowd and kill 80 people he wouldn't have done it! I If the world was run by truck drivers or little kids it'd be a better place!

    1. Freightrain

      Freightrain

It was meant as a tongue-in-cheek kind of sarcasm.  Just like all the "assault" weapons, guns, that get banned because bad people use them.  It's the fault of the person using it, not the item used.

    2. BillyT

      BillyT

Right, a truck, like a firearm is an inanimate object!

  4. BillyT

Just sale the date on the post, thought they were coming up with a new scrapping program you were referring to  The one that already took place!

that 1967 American la France I saw for 2500bucks would sell for 400k new at today's dollar.

Happy birthday, 59 isn't "old" a few years ago I met  a 74 yr old who had just ordered a new tractor! Same to our 46 year old who is a veritable embryo!lol.

  8. Ksb, I agree that we are choosing between the lesser of two evils! In reality not much less! If you follow me! One of the problems in America is we have it so easy we take for granted the freedoms we have and have had so long we don't see how fast they are going away! And once the effing election is over we will go back to ignoring how our "representatives" in gov't are working for the special interests that own them! They know the average chump is so busy with their daily routines that they are unaware of how they are being screwed!! It's no accident that the majority of those who hold higher offices are attorneys first! I believe that once they learn how the law works they become

  9. Ksb, not surprising UPS would try drones! a UPS supervisor once told me that their benchmark for a delivery driver was that they should park the truck, and complete the pickup or delivery and be back in the truck before their shoulder harness stopped swinging!

  10. KSB,received my car and driver last week, didn't  read the Vw b.s. yet, prefer road tests and nuts and bolts over corporate ethics, but I will read it just to stay informed! My wife's Corolla has the Takata air bags! The rascals sent me a letter warning to not use the r/f seat! They will pay for a rental.car but they are keeping that quiet of course was in one of my automotive publications!

  11. Kscarbel 2,having just skimmed the "news" on this site,it's almost sacrilegious to tell a joke, but maybe we could use a laugh! This goes out to our Aussie friends and anyone who has worked on British cars from the 50's on back."why do the "Brits" drink warm beer?...because Lucas makes their refrigeration systems! On the subject of the Ford 850 ,I'm completely unfamiliar with it,having retired from otr trucking in08. However from what you've said it sounds like a p.o.s.! I've been browsing Craig's list daily and I can't believe what you can buy a used deluxe road tractor for! Why would you buy new? These are mostly private owners, but some are dealers too. I'm talking 20 or 30 grand for a condo with big power and less for a day cab.many with less than500k properly maintained with today's lubricants you've got a lotta miles left before a "major" in frame rebuild.so I agree with you're advice!

      BillyT

just saw your post about the flag burning,I agree!

    2. BillyT

      BillyT

The flag burning post reminds me of an episode of the dick cavett show in the late 60's when he had Jimmy Dean the country singer, and producer of sausage products as a guest. Dick asked Jimmy what  he thought of  abbie Hoffman the hippie protester urinating on and burning our flag.Jimmy,a navy vet, replied "I think that ol boy needs a good  old west Texas butt kickin'" once again I agree!

  12. Like your B Pete! Uncracked B model wheels are hard to find, but there are ads in Hemmings and Street Rodder by people who refurbish wheels.Won't be cheap I imagine tho'!

  13. lost my Damn keyboard again! That was a 67 American la France fire truck 6cyl Detroit, auto trans probably Allison says nds battery and windshield. 2500bucks.Looks like just surface rust no visible dents. Some kind of spots on cab roof, maybe tree sap.The truck body looks really solid. If you are a fire truck guy, worth a look.Fanning springs Florida.

  14. Lost my post,Gray hair, to continue I would tighten the Strap so they couldn't Jimmy the lock and get in while I was sleeping! The guy that told me about the tanker also said a New York policemen told him If you shoot a criminal roll the body off on the side and leave! Politically incorrect for sure!

  15. Love that "yellow" F model!

What a small world! My milkman drove a Divco, and I hauled Grumman mail jeeps out of Williamsport Pa in the late 80s.

  16. Mack global,I didn't see the the original discussion(about liner removal) I'm a certified welder and an an auto mechanic, but not a diesel mechanic.in the old days they used to pack the liner with dry ice(to shrink it) and drive it or jack it up from below. I'm thinking  you want a way to weld a bar across the bore of the liner and pull it out from above with a hoist?  Of course assuming you are throwing it away! If so and the liner is hardened  steel(as most are,a good welding electrode would be 7018,low hydrogen 1/8 rod at around 120/ 125 amps dc electrode  positive. If the liner is stainless steel you could use 308/16 stainless rod or nickel rod trade name "ni rod" electrode positive(i think) the box will tell you the preferred polarity and amperage. It  has been 40 years  since I've used nickel or stainless rod, my memory is a little fuzzy! I'm assuming you are using a "stick welder" if you're  using mig  process you will have to ask your supplier  for the proper wire roll for the metal  you are welding. Hope that helps!

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

Mack global,I just saw you're  other post concerning "stick welding" .There are numerous videos. On  u tube showing how to stick weld.if  you are working in a remote area without electricity you will need to get a petrol or diesel powered generator/welder.They all function as both a welder and a generator. Some will do both at the same time (like when you need lights,or a grinder or drill).I would suggest that you practice on some pieces of scrap iron before you weld on the liner.

  17. Marcel 67, what a joke, I hate trucking in NYC, Jersey, and most of the lower east coast for all the usual reasons, but I still did the S.Bronx,Manhattan,Chicago,Spent the night once at the old Hialeah t.s. with a drop in Miami.( where the TA is now) only t.s. where you could get a beer at the counter! I figured I'd be dead in the morning so I sure didn't wanna die sober!😁 Why don't the wet nosed strokes want to go to California? I LOVE California. Just wash the truck, adjust the brakes and wait for Banning to close if possible! If not just make sure your paperwork is in order! I'm assuming they know how to get their paperwork in order!

  18. McKesson,tell us about your truck.I'm not familiar with that model,conv.? What engine,tyranny etc.thanks!

  19. Mike, while you are looking for a proper horn button if you can find the horn relay you could run a separate wire off it to something hot under the dash with an accessory  fuse to one of those old fashioned horn buttons they are still sold in parts stores.Just find a place to mount it that's accessible but doesn't screw up the dash!

Underdog, on the subject of our once proud steel industry,my best friend is from Warren oh and were talking the other night about Copperweld, U.S. Steels Homestead Works is another tragedy,The largest Bessemer converter in the world now houses a Dave and Busters restaurant and a couple other minimum wage type facilities! The o/o hauling " untarped slab" from Homestead to Clairton works (less than 20 mi) were earning 1000.00 a day with old day cab R models!  The problem as I see it is not unions,it's union greed the reason we needed unions in the first place was corporate greed!

  20. Mike, you did change the  fluid, filter and screen right?  They didn't just suck out the fluid and check it,I'm assuming they did, I don't recall the c6  having a drain plug!

  21. Mike, she might require you to weigh that ground round  on a certified scale before she would accept it! Lol

  22. MmIoOfAm looking to find a b  model to fix up down here in Florida.just throwing around a few ideas.have any of u heard of a b series Cummins swap into a b model? Does a bell housing exist to adapt to a triplex .I know a guy who put a 10 speed road ranger behind one in a f350 Ford hotshot used a stock bell housing. The. Torque specs are similar or higher as is the horsepower, compared to a673. 1000 lb lighter.I realize this is sacrilege! Would prefer a 673 if I could find a good runner.has to b a compound as the shifting is half the fun in a "hobby truck".thanks!

Dammit! I just deleted my whole post,by accident !

  23. Mrs mack Paul ,you mentioned the Hand built Hippo,Our freightliner was originally built by consolidated freightways mechanics in their Portland Oregon shop.they needed a short lightweight tractor that could pull longer trailers and haul more weight, hence the aluminum cab.this being the result of heavily enforced weight and length laws. The infamous DOT officers! I suspect they only wanted to get their cattle and freight hauled in Australia.

Thanx for the reply on Aussie truck laws! Was as I thought.I don't suppose you have truck stops in the outback lol,,

    3. BillyT

      BillyT

Lost my keyboard again! Do you have plug in coolers in your trucks like US drivers  have? Australia is a modern country, but your cities are a "ways" apart! Some otr drivers here have little charcoal grills they carry for a change from t.s. "swill"! I suppose you could do  a "Bear Gryll" Thing and roast some roadkill, time permitting.you have a Federal, must be the model that resembles a cross between a Diamond T and a GMC. Rode a school bus that looked like that. The 50's Federal used an International cab and their own front end, weren't many made, very unique grille assembly.

    4. mrsmackpaul

      mrsmackpaul

Yeah Billy long way between drinks out here so to speak

No plug in coolers and our truck stops are pretty lame by US standards we have stricter length and width laws than the US but we go a lot taller and are allowed higher axle loads

Speed limit on Road Trains is 90 km/h which must be about about 57 MPH the rest of the trucks B doubles and normal semis 100 km/h or 60 MPH

You cant really go any faster on a lot of the roads the tyres get hot and to many blow outs

heres a picture of my old Federal working if your interested

Also liked the Cattle Carter's,will watch the whole thing later.Love to have the old Leyland!Got one of your little bearded dragons for my grandson.I bet you roast them on a stick in the outback! .smart little lizard, gets all excited when I bring him breakfast.(worms and romaine lettuce). Did you see the silly looking diamond t?that thing had a 4cylinder  jeep engine in front of the main engine! Only kicked it in when pulling a hill or needed xtra power!

  25. OD,GPS can be misleading! I followed a set of directions to a customer once,Got 300yds from his facility, and it's on the other side of a railroad  track without a crossing!! The roadbeds 3 foot high! Had to drive miles  to get to the place!

    1. other dog

      other dog

Yeah, I heard that- I don't even use GPS, just a Rand McNally and a phone. The phone is the thing now, I used to carry a brief case full of city maps! I think I still have most of them.

    2. BillyT

      BillyT

So did I OD! Had the big street by street map of NYC and one for Miami amazing documents, actually showed the name of each business in the individual buildings! Of course these would have to be updated periodically. When those little GPS screens first came out they were 800dollars! Now about 90dollars on sale, went down just like computers! When they first came out this young driver was in back of me in rural Pennsylvania and every time we were approaching a  little cross street he would say ok you're coming up on Jones lane and there it was! Went on like this for miles! I was amazed!

    3. BillyT

      BillyT

OD, don't feel bad about deleting the pictures I delete stuff by accident all the time!  You posted something about chicken so I'm doing a survey." What t.s. or restaurant in America has the best fried chicken" I'm voting for the little independent t.s near Jackson Ohio on rte 35, takes a long time to get it,because they bread each order individually, but worth it! Also like the "southwestern chicken rice soup" and " Omars taco soup"  at Triple T in Tucson. Been a few years, maybe they are gone or bought out. Tell us about your favorite truck stop!
