  1. Just hit me,how the hell do you ban assault trucks?if they're talking about the stroke who drove into the crowd in France, yeah, if he knew it was illegal to drive into a crowd and kill 80 people he wouldn't have done it! I If the world was run by truck drivers or little kids it'd be a better place!

      Freightrain

It was meant as a tongue-in-cheek kind of sarcasm.  Just like all the "assault" weapons, guns, that get banned because bad people use them.  It's the fault of the person using it, not the item used.

      BillyT

Right, a truck, like a firearm is an inanimate object!

  2. freightrain,I don't know how old you are,but if Grayhair is reading this he is old enough to answer this question.in the 70's there was coast to coast team operation(probably reefer) running tag axle gas jobs Ford or Chevy ,with box sleepers. At 100k their mechanics would install a new "long block"engine. That was all you could get out of a gas engine with the lubricants of the day.Did the swap in a couple of hrs.Other than the atrocious mileage a gas engine got,the benefits were many!Low initial cost, light weight, with the 73280gross limit, low cost of parts etc. Does anyone remember what this company was called?

Hi BillyT.  I just turned 50 on Sunday(ugh).  Got plenty of gray hair though......

Can't say I know of the company you speak of.

  3. Freightrain, speaking of old "jimmys"in the70's there was a kid hauling steel with a longnose gmc v12 gasburner 20sp.Spicer.probably had less trouble pulling hills than finding gas stations!@4mpg! Running outta Pittsburgh,we mostly ran all the auto plants in your state, sometimes as far west as Chicago, and Detroit. By  The way ,what is your "home " drag strip?

freightrain,I drove a b61, 711 with a triplex that would do80mph@2100, obviously an overdrive. If you were to swap in a modern big block,454,427,455 etc. Into that chassis, they will all do 5000rpm,what would it top out at! Also I know the triplex would handle the torque but would it and the diff.handle the rpm?  It would be sacrilege to put a gas v8 into a restored B model, but I'm always thinking out of the box!

  4. Used to haul 3  military humvees, they weigh about 8000lbs look on the load board ,in a t.s. for a flatbed with ramps and a light load going east.If the rates are still as cheap outta Utah as they used to be you might find someone! Obviously he would need room on the t

R models were made for a long time should be a lot of"interchange"  on the doors,I'd try some truck salvage yards, possibly away from the coast as salt is hard on steel parts.Or you could get really lucky and find one off an RL700 I believe they were aluminum! Good luck!

  5. The second bunk on a"michigan train" is where he keeps the tire man! Speaking of "tire men" right after hurricane Andrew, virtually every tri axle dump truck in America was in Dade county,Florida all d.o.t.inspections were suspended if it could make it under its own power to fl.it was sold for 3 times it's value! All the roads were covered with glass, metal scraps, and nails!every major intersection had at least one tire repair truck, just waiting! There were lines of trucks as far as the eye could see waiting to dump! At 50bucks an hr around the clock

Trailer. Or... flatbed freight outta Utah being as scarce as it used to be someone might want a load to get them to there next partial.

  6. I remember after 911 we were no longer allowed to go over Hoover dam with an 18 , necessary, imagine a tanker with something explosive or toxic deliberately going over the. Edge! The colorado river provides water for the whole southwest.having said that,of course they will milk the chance to add fees! Before 911 I crossed into Ontario with no problem, lots of  precleared loads, or a few minutes at the broker. The 1st time after 911 they unloaded my trailer to ck.my load, with a 150buck fee took 10minutes! Also asked to ck. My cab.Not knocking Canada, they are always polite "to a fault".actually nicer than my own customs people.once I was running up 95 with a drop in Caribou maine

They cut me off again! Anyway it was 3am and I'm dozing off,so I miss the exit for us1! The next thing I see the sign for Atlantic time zone,I'm in NB!,then I come up on customs. The Canadian lady says just make a u turn and I'll call the U.S. side and tell them you are coming.I get to the U.S. side and the customs guy says"why wouldn't they let you into Canada"?so of course I had to explain the whole deal to him.

  7. Gray hair, wish you were my neighbor! Did you see my post on Jimmy deans comments concerning the desecration of our flag?He was from Midland I think. had one of his sausage biscuits for breakfast last wk! Glad u found a b model to restore. You are fortunate,to live in Texas where there there is  so much rust free antique "iron"! I can't count the potential  street rods and old tks I've seen in w.Texas! Speaking of street rods, Tommy ivo's nailhead t bucket used to turn 12sec. @127mph!wow! What fun with a near vertical steering column! My dad owned the local salvage yard when I was a kid .can't count how many nailhead Buick motors we scrapped! They never wore out, unlike the dynaflow tyranny behind them!.Ivo's four engine rail

Nice to meet you Billy T.  Garlits museum is definitely worth the visit.  Been there 3 times myself and met him last time there.  Very nice guy.

Gray hair,I vaguely remember that thing about soda can size in N.Y.,was that to protect the citizens from large soda cans on the ground when not properly disposed of?to protect the kids  from large sodas? Or something about recycling? just don't buy the kids sodas, and put your cans in the trash,or recycle them. Duh! love Texas have been treated well there no matter what city I was in.

  8. Kscarbel 2,having just skimmed the "news" on this site,it's almost sacrilegious to tell a joke, but maybe we could use a laugh! This goes out to our Aussie friends and anyone who has worked on British cars from the 50's on back."why do the "Brits" drink warm beer?...because Lucas makes their refrigeration systems! On the subject of the Ford 850 ,I'm completely unfamiliar with it,having retired from otr trucking in08. However from what you've said it sounds like a p.o.s.! I've been browsing Craig's list daily and I can't believe what you can buy a used deluxe road tractor for! Why would you buy new? These are mostly private owners, but some are dealers too. I'm talking 20 or 30 grand for a condo with big power and less for a day cab.many with less than500k properly maintained with today's lubricants you've got a lotta miles left before a "major" in frame rebuild.so I agree with you're advice!

      BillyT

just saw your post about the flag burning,I agree!

    2. BillyT

      BillyT

The flag burning post reminds me of an episode of the dick cavett show in the late 60's when he had Jimmy Dean the country singer, and producer of sausage products as a guest. Dick asked Jimmy what  he thought of  abbie Hoffman the hippie protester urinating on and burning our flag.Jimmy,a navy vet, replied "I think that ol boy needs a good  old west Texas butt kickin'" once again I agree!

  9. 300bucks is a good price for ANY big truck tranny in serviceable condition.pull the cover and check the gears for broken teeth, pitting, teeth worn to a point etc metallic filings or a silvery look to the grease. The owner shouldn't balk at this or I'd be suspicious!

  10. Oh,I just saw the trailers been sold! Wuz gonna suggest you go online and lookup a major flatbed carrier Landstar and Mercer come to mind, and see if they have an o/o in Texas that could deck your trailer and bring it to mass. Wouldn't have been cheap tho!

  11. Mack global,I didn't see the the original discussion(about liner removal) I'm a certified welder and an an auto mechanic, but not a diesel mechanic.in the old days they used to pack the liner with dry ice(to shrink it) and drive it or jack it up from below. I'm thinking  you want a way to weld a bar across the bore of the liner and pull it out from above with a hoist?  Of course assuming you are throwing it away! If so and the liner is hardened  steel(as most are,a good welding electrode would be 7018,low hydrogen 1/8 rod at around 120/ 125 amps dc electrode  positive. If the liner is stainless steel you could use 308/16 stainless rod or nickel rod trade name "ni rod" electrode positive(i think) the box will tell you the preferred polarity and amperage. It  has been 40 years  since I've used nickel or stainless rod, my memory is a little fuzzy! I'm assuming you are using a "stick welder" if you're  using mig  process you will have to ask your supplier  for the proper wire roll for the metal  you are welding. Hope that helps!

    1. BillyT

      BillyT

Mack global,I just saw you're  other post concerning "stick welding" .There are numerous videos. On  u tube showing how to stick weld.if  you are working in a remote area without electricity you will need to get a petrol or diesel powered generator/welder.They all function as both a welder and a generator. Some will do both at the same time (like when you need lights,or a grinder or drill).I would suggest that you practice on some pieces of scrap iron before you weld on the liner.

  12. 41 Chevy, thanx for the comeback on  the wolf two engine tractors, also on the Diamond Reo with the Dietz air cooled diesel engines. The thing actually did resemble a mid80's anteater with a longer hood.Not. the pretty T600 's, but the "tonka toy" looking ones KW and a few others built.I found a video of a Dietz a guy was building for a truck project, kinda resembles a continental aircraft engine. The Diamond Reo is already sold, the guy only wanted 1800 bucks for it,said it ran and drove.

On the subject of Hillary it would appear perhaps SHE should have had a  more comprehensive background check!

  13. Timmy b, you saw that episode where they rolled the "hemi under glass" briefly I wondered if they "staged" that, but I don't think so,that car's too valuable plus the dude that owns it has to be pushing80 yrs old too much chance of serious injury  of him and Jay! Have you seen the videos of that car running from the 70's? It has  a Plexiglas window on the drivers floor so he can see the track when he's  doing those 6 foot  wheelstands ! I actually owned a65 barracuda. Paid 25 bucks for it! Had a slant six automatic.the only way it'd do a wheelstand is if you jacked up the front end!,

41 Chevy were you referring to the hemi under glass rollover when u mentioned  it's good to have a sturdy roll cage?

    3. BillyT

      BillyT

Hey,Timmy b,the "Hemi under glass" was featured in Hot Rod magazine in the late 60's,70's but I forget the exact driveline configuration, not much room for drv, shft u joints etc! Had to have SOMETHING to compensate for movement, can't just bolt the whole powertrain solid. The slant six had a performance option(four barrel carb, etc.) But  it sounds like you're referring to a small hemi v/8. The smallest hemi I know of stateside was a341, I had one in a Desoto coupe 1955 model. Toyota built a hemi for their  medium duty tks,Saw a couple in "yank" street  rods looks like a  mopar  motor.

Timmy b,totally unrelated subject! My grandson has a bearded Dragon as a pet, supposedly a native of the Australian desert.Do you see them running all over the place, like we have squirrels and rabbits in our backyards in America? Really cool lizard, very tame you can put it on you're t shirt and it will stay there while you walk around!

  14. Unless I am mistaken u models came  out in66 ,same as r  models the company I hauled steel for used  u and r models, day cabs.237 maxidynes .I  didn't like the long  crooked shift levers on the u,but they backed up easier. The company started buying f model sleeper cabs around the time I left. Figures!

  15. Retro, you seem to have it figured out on tire pressure! When I was hauling steel in an r model tandem tractor comeback susp. The company had me  "bobtail" a tractor 250mi from Pittsburgh pa. To buffalo ny. Knowing how rough the thing rode  "bobtail"  I dropped the drive tires to 50lbs from 90. Much better! This was 1974 and they were 1100/20 bias ply tires they have a stiffer sidewall than modern radials,so I'll bet if you are running "bias" you could run 30 psi long term. If you don't have power strg.you could. Probably drop it unit it affects your steering. The damn spell check changed camelback to comeback! Also, do you guys get "Jay Lenos Garage in Australia? I'd like to see  him drive a  road train.might have a little trouble with a two stick, but he's already driven a road ranger.

  16. McKesson,tell us about your truck.I'm not familiar with that model,conv.? What engine,tyranny etc.thanks!

  17. MmIoOfAm looking to find a b  model to fix up down here in Florida.just throwing around a few ideas.have any of u heard of a b series Cummins swap into a b model? Does a bell housing exist to adapt to a triplex .I know a guy who put a 10 speed road ranger behind one in a f350 Ford hotshot used a stock bell housing. The. Torque specs are similar or higher as is the horsepower, compared to a673. 1000 lb lighter.I realize this is sacrilege! Would prefer a 673 if I could find a good runner.has to b a compound as the shifting is half the fun in a "hobby truck".thanks!

  19. Those of us who actually drove  over the road know they took a lot of liberties with tractor types in convoy! Looks like some Hollywood type went to a truck auction and bought the cheapest trucks he could find.that r model day cab with the "kangaroo guard" looks like an oilfield truck

Is that r model a "compound" if so I wonder if Kris actually drove it?knowing him he probably did! I'm pretty sure Chuck Napier drove the f model in "moonfire"  it was a "compound" as was Richard egan's r model.I'm doing a survey... What was the stupidest "trucker"movie ever? I'm voting on white line fever!
