  1. the company was, but the union would not give an inch and demanded more and more until they could not afford to stay open. if the union would have given concessions, they could have weathered the storm. but nope, we want more money, more time off, newer trucks, more everything. and the drivers did not care because they knew they were not getting more for doing less. so they tore the equipment up. the past 7 years or so the Elizabeth NJ terminal looked like a junk yard with all the tore up trucks and trailers in it. 10 years ago it was a completely different story. the only time you saw trucks at the shop was for routine maintenance.
  2. yup. finally closed the doors for good on 2-11-2019
  3. in 1964 the volunteer fire department my father was in ordered an aerial ladder on a GM "crackerbox". it was supposed to have a V12, 5 speed, and two speed rear axle. by the time they got around to building it, the V12 was no longer an option, so it came with the 637 "magnum" V8. gm said the two speed rear was not needed, the 5 speed was more than enough engine to do what we needed. needless to say, they were dead wrong. that truck was the biggest turd i ever drove. besides the fact it only got about 2 MPG, for 20 years that truck would have to leave the firehouse going north at full tilt to hit the hill 1/4 mile north at around 40 mph to be doing 5 mph on top of the hill. the pumper with the V12 5 speed and two speed rear weighed almost the same as the ladder truck, could hit the bottom of the hill at 20 mph and be doing 40 on top. that ladder truck had 13,000 miles on it in 1986 when the new truck came in and they gave it to a volunteer company in Pennsylvania. that company had it for less than a month when they sent it out to have it re-powered with a detroit diesel, because they had hills in their area and it would not climb them either. when i joined in 1974 i was assigned the ladder truck after qualifying as a driver because no one else wanted to drive it.
  4. around 7-8 years ago, the NEMF trucks were getting real ratty, because the drivers knew their days were numbered and just did not care about the trucks or company anymore.
  5. VIN shown is 76 F600
  6. my bet is at one time in it's life it wore a snow plow out front and the doors were cut in the hood because it would not flip open with the plow on to check oil or other fluids.
  7. if i remember correctly the 150 and 170 HP engines were "H" models we had a 190 HP in the old 60's dodge grain truck when i was on the farm. my friend still has it, but only uses it on site and does not take it out on the road anymore.
  8. as said, those are synflex connectors and push in to remove the air line. you will need to spray penetrating oil in the fittings to loosen up the crud that has built up over time. then possibly blow out with compressed air to get it out of the fitting before trying to remove the line.
  9. simple solution to this. edit the post to delete that picture, with a note: "picture deleted after 6 years because it just offended a snowflake"
  10. good call, i missed the two port master cylinder.
  11. that booster under the truck is for the brakes, not clutch. that truck will have a regular mechanical clutch. another option for ignition is a pertronix points replacement unit. simple, and 10 minute to install.
  12. AOC and her pack of rabid blankity blanks can leave even if it don't offend them!!!
  13. you don't all you can hope for is they believe you. which i really don't think they will, since ULSD has more lubrication than the old high sulfur ever did.
  14. no cab access. once you are in it, you are there until you die and get buried with it.
  15. from my understanding talking with new york city firefighters the open cab design was not for ladder swing, but rather for visibility in spotting the truck at fire scenes for best ladder use.
  16. good luck and congratulations!. it sounds big now, but once you get everything in it it will be way too small.
  17. i am thinking the hood was grafted to the bus.
  18. dielectric grease
  19. the democratic party should adopt MAPA their slogan in their run against President Trump. i mean really, nothing else they have tried the past 3 1/2 years has been effective.
  20. first pic, is that a tank for an on site water truck?
  21. yea, site work you can get away with a 5 speed. buy if you try hitting the road you need a 13 minimum or better an 18 for the hills. nothing worse than catching a red light on the bottom of a hill and trying to get 80k moving up it and end up taking a mile to hit 35 mph.
  22. that truck is just as purrty going down the road as it is at shows. they keep it in tip top shape . and the low boy it drags around looks brand new too. i actually saw it going into the caterpillar dealer today around 10:45 am
  23. triaxle needs an 18 speed.
  24. not the iron duke, that was the chevy 153 4 cylinder. it was replaced with the AMC 4.o six cylinder starting in the early 70's when AMC took over jeep brand. same with your cousins chevy II, it had a chevy 153 4 cylinder, not an "iron duke"
  25. iron duke was a 4 cylinder iron block from the late 70's early 80's for pontiac. sorta like the chevy 153 used in the chevy II/nova in the 60's
