  1. The rear end oil shoud not get over 100 deg if bobtailing empty. When I pull hils in the company truck I see 120-150 depending on the outside temps and grades. Just my.02
  2. I think I need to get a green and red R model for my next project http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=71...d+max&hl=en
  3. MI is a sad state I got a speeding ticket for 58 in a 55. and they wonder why they get a bad name
  4. The crack can be welded and should cause no issue of done correctly. Im not shure how the rookie DOT cops would feel about it but it wont fall off unless its heavely rusted thru. with no weight on it I cant see it as a issue. just keep your eyes on it after it gets welded Trent
  5. I did as Rick said I nstalled 2 new 12V battiries and ran them to a 12V starter charging with a new altantor. My B only had one batt box so it worked out fine. If I remember this was my cost from my mack dealer the batts were $110 for both the starter was $230 and the alternator was $120 To check if its positive ground just follow the + cabel off the batt and see if it goes to the frame rail congrats and get us some pics
  6. MY Long hood (RS700L) has the 6 cyl 285 Mack tip turbine . It has about 12"-14" between the fire wall and rear engine. Some day I would like to drop a E9 in it but for now it pulls great and cost next to nothing to keep it running. Someone correct me but are the 700 hoods 12" longer than R models??/ always wondered how much longer they were?
  7. this is a little off topic Rob..are you going to keep the Cat engine in the truck? I thought this was your R12 project?? have a good one
  8. thats great news, Thanks again Barry and Watts mack for giving us this great webpage!!! Trent
  9. Thats intresting 3P. when will the news be released? I have been meaning to say thanks for taking the time to talk to us mack fans!! I think were all glad we have you here to give us first hand info from HQ... As all of us here have a deep love for these old dogs. On the otherhand I will have to agree with HK that it makes alot of us worried about Volvos ownership of Mack. Just like you said someone halfway across the pond can make decisions on a truck line that they have no past history with.. I hope you can voice the opinions of die hard mack owners to HQ for us.. I think the new Mack/Volvo engines will be just as good as any other mfg but I do worry about the cab and drivetrain options. just my .02 Trent
  10. Ditto....my RS had bad turning also. When i installed the powere steering box I cranked the stops back and it turns like a dream. If you have flotation tires and or a longer frame it seams the factory makes turning angels less to save wear on the truck.
  11. you know your trucks if you under stand 75% of that lingo.. good find LOL. I didnet think there was that many CB slang words out there
  12. My friend has 2 lat 80s ? Macks with the 8 stud hole rims. His mechanic hates them. and to make it worse you need a few extra spare rims that will only fit those trucks.
  13. That might be true WV but I find myself always explaining to the Dealership parts counter guys what a 2 valve is or what a tip turbine fan does LOL I hope Mack keeps stocking 2V parts or aftermarket venders continue too because I dont plan to change my 30 year old engine anytime soon.!!!!
  14. Cant say where to look for the trans numbers but it sounds like you have a overdrive 13 speed. if your truck had a top gear direct transmission with 4.17 rears your top speed at a governed 1800RPM would put you at about 50-52 MPH. even if they were 3.87 rears that would make it around 60-62 @1800. You would need high 2.xx or low 3xx rear ratios to hit 70 MPH. most trucks I have seen dont often come with that low of a ratio...that i know of... Sounds like that dog can run!!!
  15. tell us it was a one shot deal gettin in the dock
  16. hows your back feeling Tim??? tuff trucks they were.. and still are!
  17. I took a few pics of a friend and I loading up his project 4x4 that did not want to start this morning. had to pull it up on the trailer with the RS and a Chain. Cold wet mud is always fun at 7am, especially whey your on vacation! Its heading out to AZ to be built as a rock crawler. next time i see it it might be upside down???LOL Hope all had a good Christmas
  18. if you are ever traveling inbetween Chicago and Milwaukee on I-94, take a look on the east side of the highway just 10 miles north of the Wisconson border. there are a few CFD pumpers sitting inthe backof a used (abused) truck yard just waiting for a ride home or to be fully parted out. not in the best conditions but worth stopping for a look
  19. my boss has a 440 HP V8 superliner.. just started tearing it down for the rebuild today. cant wait to see how a fresh V8 pulls.
  20. If I remember correctly its just for ignition control for the engine in diffrent temps or altitude. you could andvance or retard the ignition timing to keep the engine running smooth. lots of older cars had them. someone correct me if im wrong
  21. sounds like a 2 stick 6 speed. 1,2,3,4,5 on the main box low, direct, reverse onthe aux box to use low......use 1st gear in the main box (left stick) with the axu box (right stick) in low. mack says to only use low with 1st gear, not shure why they dont want you to use 2nd 3rd etc... in low? my self and many will use 1-2-3 in low to get some speed on a hill then shift the aux box(right stick) into direct. almost any time you need 1st-low it will be so slow that its difficult to grab direct as the truck will stop rolling before you can make the shift. reverse is fun in 5th just watch those mirrors!
