  1. I have that front sheet metal, (hood, shell, headlight panels and frame extensions) I will part with. Send me a PM. Thanks FW
  2. Mack top loading tandems have five oil level compartments to maintan, three on the front rear and two on the rear rear, they all have drain points. None of the oil is shared except the lower housing, it is shared with the hubs. FW
  3. I would find the source of the knock, then decide what to do. What is the destination of that load of logs? FW
  4. If you have a shutter guard on there I think the bolts at the bottom of the braces have to be taken out. FW
  5. Off-highway trucks in the pit, quarrying and minning industry they use left hand traffic so the driver has a better view of the wall or the rim,. Loaded trucks against the wall, empty against the rim. A DM can't be compared to an off highway hauler, but many have done the job.
  6. You have some numbers missing. The eleventh letter in the 17 digit vin number is the manufacturing plant.
  7. I met that gentleman Roy at the 2001 ATHS Show in Reno NV , and he told me the story of his LT Macks. I told him I am working on an LT and if he had a few parts I could use, well the next day he brought them to the show that was good. After the show I followed him back to his house an got a few more parts, (stuff that could fit into large pieces of luggage) better. Made a deal on some larger items and he shipped them to me, perfect. The best part of that trip was I got to meet and talk to a man that went to the Mack deealership and drove home a brand new Mack LT. On the model desingnations, LT- Just about an all steel truck, early production units had a different front rear spring hangars and frame arrangment in that area compared to the later units. 1947-53, production 415 units, all 3 axle (sw's) LTL Same as the later LT's with a lot of aluminum components, (engine mounts, front spring brackets, belly band, frt.cab mounts, radiator support cross members, steps and battery boxes, steering column, trunnion support, wheel hubs, brake spiders, brake shoes, air tanks, axle stops, auxilary trans case, and wheels.) 1950-56, production 1216 units 3 axle 130 units 2 axle (designated LTLT) LTH Same as LTL except some or most of the structural suspension parts were replaced with steel (spring hangars, trunion supports, and brake brake spiders) 1953-56 production 248 units, all 3 axle (sw's) Total production 2009 units All models have aluminum hoods and radiator support sides. I have been with the Mack line for the last 40 years and the LT is my favorite. I hope this information is helpfull and stand to be corrected if wrong. Enjoy the rest of the summer, FW
  8. Woosta. Just had a two day show at Woosta sand & gravel 100+ trucks. Sorry no pictures. FW
  9. I sure that is a non serviceable drag link, replace it with a new one. FW
  10. I can jump in here, My favorite dozer is my D8K I have had it for 22 years, 12K hrs on the meter, it runs and works just like the day after it was built. The best sounding machine is the 17A series D7. When I first got going in the 70's an old time dirt guy said if you got Macks and Cats you got the best, I have to agree.` FW
  11. Arute had a conrtact for section of I 190, Sterling MA in the early 80's. Had 5 or 6 B81SX's pulling belly dumps. FW
  12. I hear the same noise around each December, not sure if it is coming from the rear ends, but it could be.
  13. On the left side run the bolts from the bottom up with a copper washer on each end. Use a locknut and seal the threads so you don't lose the oil out of the pinion housing. FW
  14. He charges $100.00 /gal. (tank capacity), so to polish a 9000 gal. tank trailer $900,000.00 ? FW
  15. What Rob is talking about is a bead breaker for the multi-piece rims (tube type tires). Tires that havent been apart in a while can be tough, but once the rims have been blasted and painted they mount and dismount fairly easy with tire tools. The power machines work well for dismount especialy if they are rusted, but to mount them they have to laying on the ground. I have seen rims that have been on the power machine several times and what happens is to grab the rim base there is a linkage that expands with three little cup points that bite into the rim to hold and turn it, well they make small dents in the rim and chip the paint. I do all my tires myself except balancing. To change a tubless tire is 1/10th work of a tube type, but I still run a lot of them. I made my bead blaster from a 30# propane tank. To dismount a tube type, a venturi to suck the air out and a rim stand make the job easy. FW
  16. On the early trucks around pre 1963 you have to remove the outer fender, inner fender , outer headlight panel bolts, hood latch bolts on both sides of truck, and the four screws on the top of shell. You can now lift the shell and headlight panels off, then separate the shell. You can remove the shell by carefully cutting the bolts to the headlight panels with a sawzall, but to reassemble you have to separate the fenders. I would change over to the later radiator shell mounting. FW
  17. It's a truck for a Mack guy, I have all makes and like them all, but Mack is a Mack..... my 02
  18. The steering gear works OK, not many parts in the system for internals, couple of complete boxes available as of 12/08. I have put a Cruisliner box on my 82. The frame is spliced at the at the front spring rear hanger on the first generation trucks, not a problem. The hood attachment isn't good, but the Superliner 1 hood looks better without the back of the fenders clipped off. I am told all the RW'S built in PA, the RL's in CA My 82 RWS786LSTxxxx1055, black dash, dark brown door & headliner, black and brown seats. Mack has,is,and will be the front runner. BUY IT........ FW
  19. The second 2 is it has an input shaft for 2 plate clutch, or the splines are smaller, can't remember. FW
  20. Can you still get the hinge for a DM 800 from Mack. That is what I used on my B, back in '91 FW
