Sorry to hear about your scary incident. I have the same habit of turning on the dishwasher late in the evening. I have thought of the "what if" but now it's time to change that habit. Glad things weren't any worse and hopefully you can get things repaired and back to normal.

scary indeed, but luckily you made it out. my bad habit is setting the gas fired clothes dryer for 45-60 minutes and going to bed.

i have 4 smoke detectors and 2 co2 detectors in the house, 3 smoke and a co2 downstairs,, and 1 smoke and a co2 in the upstairs bedroom.

i have 20 amp wire with 15 amp outlets and breakers through out the house, with only 4 outlets per circuit instead of the 6 per circuit allowed.

i was fire department for 9 years before my accident, and dad was fire marshal for 50 years.

Well, be blowed, unlike the breaker that didn't trip

Was it a RCD, RCBO or a CB type of breaker that didn't trip ?

Depending on the types of circuit protection as to the types of faults that trip the breakers

Rewirable fuses are as basic as you can get and all have to be removed when any electrical work is done in Australia

Smoke alarms are something I don't use at all and generally pull them out of the house

Proper circuit design and installation with correct size circuit protection are gunna save you a lot more head ache

Problem is, hardly any electricians actually do this and use the "rule of thumb" method that works most times

Anyway, the main thing is your safe

There is substitute for a good electrician, and you only get what you pay for as well

Everyone wants to screw people on the price and then cry fowl when they get a less than desirable result

Stay safe out there

That sucks. Glad it was minimal damage. I had that happen to our microwave oven just a few minutes ago. I made this really growling noise and then it started smoking. I was standing right there in front of it so I just unplugged it and threw it outside. yes that’s pretty scary that stuff like that goes on and the circuit does not flip

Paul, here in the USA most states and insurance companies require at least one plug in powered smoke detector interconnected with battery powered units.  plus a CO2 detector.

at least one on each floor, plus either in bedrooms, or outside the bedroom door.

also, in most states if you do an addition of more than 10% on a old building you must update to current smoke detector laws.

Pretty sure the same or similar rules are in Australia

All new installations must have hardwired smoke alarms

All rentals must have hardwired smoke alarms

Rules are similar

Only thing is the Princess makes more noise than any smoke alarm will if the smoke alarm goes

Oh my god she puts on a performance

So I just pull the smoke alarms out and reckon it makes life easier than been married to someone screaming her head off

But electrical fires arenot caused by a cable shorting, a short circuit fault will trip the breaker or blow a fuse in a millie second

Loose connections cause fires

No electrical protection device can stop a shoddy workmanship

Wow....glad you happen to be right there.

It all happens for a reason!!

I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen(not because of my cooking).  A couple smoke detectors(ya goes off in hall when anything is on the stove(pita).  My stove vent does not go outside, just filter and back into room.  Cook a burger on my cast iron skillet and gar-en-tee it will set off alarm.

My Co2 saved my butt a few years ago when plenum in furnace cracked.  Walked in the house and it was squealing.  Had to get new furnace.

Friend lost whole house from lightening strike.  Hit house and got to the water pipe and it made pipes in house glow and caught joists on fire.  Total loss.

All you can do is hope it isn't your turn.

Not trying to start anything, but in my State, none of that is required.  I have one battery powered smoke detector in the hallway by the bedroom.  I used to have another just outside the kitchen, but the wife set it off every time she cooked.

Same rules here.. I have a smoke alarm in the center of the house wired into the burglar alarm system. And YES my wife has set it off a couple of times. and the alarm company calling!!!

Same here I just take it off and put it in the bedroom until she is done cooking
