Bob.. take a close up picture of where the pitman arm is on the sector shaft, please... I am needing to learn what Mech is saying.  Just because.. 🍻

also it depends on the box the DM has. a sheppard outside frame pitman  had the two screws. inside frame ?? closing in on 74 I was still able to keep up with the youngsters loading hay and shaving on flatbed today after all day of sanding/grinding!! so maybe mind cells are off a little.

THANK YOU  for the service manual. two set screws were more common(early) ; the large (5/8th ? allen ) did wake some brain cells, don't remember exact application.

Sheppard used three different pitman arm retaining methods, you have to know which of the three you are dealing with.

Oldest had no nut and two set screws angled out from the box side of the arm.

the next style has a hex nut (allen head) and a star washer/retaining tab behind the nut.

The last style has a big hex nut that is split half way through and has a small bolt to "squeeze" the nut so it can't back off

thought Bob's DM was a '66 which would make it the two set screw version. can't place the "last style" ;; but that's OK - don't expect to be involved with one.

Check, if it is held on with set screws there will be 2 about 180 deg apart.  They can be hard to find after many years of rust and dirt. My "39" box truck has the two set screws (and still has the pitman arm on!) and the box will likely be scrapped with it on! No one wants a "39" box!

Hey geoph thanks so much for the download and all your input fellas just woke up breakfast and GYM soon didn’t have a clue what I was going to do with this box once I got it off lol but decided to deal with it next since sector seal is getting worse and dripping and running out pretty good where ever I have it parked  .. might be a couple days before I get started on it but I’ll post photos of pitman arm a little later

ok ,,,ran out of excuses and yesterday was gorgeous ,,,,got it all back together,,,nothing leaking,,white, smoke appears to have reduced conciderably,,,if not completely gone,,,,,maybe i might have to burn off the carbon, from that one tight exhaust valve,,,,kinda hard to tell...started it in the garage,,,with one door open,,took a while to clear the smoke,,,,,bob

Well I'm a little late to the party here, well done on getting it all back together

Good news about a improvement in the smoke situation as well

That looks like the head of a bolt angled into the pitman arm at a 45 degree angle at 10 oclock in your picture?????

Should be one on both sides, the other will be 180 deg from the 1st. If I am seeing what you are, it looks like someone replaced the set screw with a bolt.

If you are really interested , I can take a picture of mine, as there is no cab on the frame to get in the way. Just 2 allen head set screws preventing the pitman arm from working out on the shaft.

ill take a closer look at it i only see one,,but it looks like the other side should have one also been working on this porch protection enclosure mrs mower demanded i create because this nosy circus freak stands on that porch next door smoking cigarettes  and stares at us,,,,thier used to be 2 big trees over there,,that would block him out,,but he had a water pipe leaking,,which was flooding my back yard, and the backhoe had to dig both trees out to repair line,,,,now superfreik has a clear shot,,,of coarse he's on public assistance and has nothing else to do,,,i should be finished with it tomorrow,,,bob

i used to talk to this jackass,,,untill i had to call animal control on him twice,,because his huge dog kept busting thru that fence and running in my yard,,,,and i have two little dogs, and water department  twice for busted water line flooding my yard,,bob

some one lost the original set screws or couldn't find proper allen wrench for install. some where under all the rust there should be a small arrow on the arm and steering output shaft. easier to just mark arm to shaft location , mis alignment the truck will  steer one way more then other.

after enlarging the picture, can see the double dibit  marks some one put on towards top right side. realigning is important.

I went through all steering box oil leak repairs on my bucket of bolts

Finally got it all oil tight and was still loosing oil through the pump

Oh dear, for me it was amazing just how how bad my truck was and also just how much was wrong

It took a lot of attempts on my behalf tp finally get it sorted

As my mate says "it costs a fortune in oil to just run out on the ground and only 50 cents and time for a oil seal"

Anyway I'm sure your all over this Bob

Back when the Princess and I first got hitched our neighbour had lattice work and a potato vine growing up and over  the top

We would go up to the dairy farm we were getting  going every two out of three weekends

Well bugger me, we come home after one weekend and the latice is removed, the garden bed is trampled flat

So I chat to the neighbour about this and suggest he probably shouldn't be doing all this without letting us know

Anyway he tells me he is all done

Nothing happens until next time we are away

Get home garden is completely stuffed now and the fence is like the great China wall

I promptly loose my cool and rip it all down, I think I was more shitty at him coming onto our place with out asking than to build a fence like the great wall of China and to be so gutless that he waited until we weren't there

Not often I loose my shit, but I  was fully wound up that afternoon lol

Good luck with the neighbour and your grand erection

Paul

Thier everywhere there’s no avoiding idiots and as far as junk … couldn’t be any worse than this DM truck really needed everything… . And leaking oil I had to put a quart in just to get it turned around lot of it was running on the ground also coolant leaking topped off radiator now it’s dripping on the floor….. too many issues lol bob
