I agree relief vale stuck. Generally it dumps pressure at around 80 psi .  Put a mechanical gauge on it with an other filter and check pressure on start up. Some times they free up  after  the  expanding / exploding oil filter  show.  :)   Pressure relief replacement is not to bad on the big blocks.

wonder if there`s a way to unstick the regulator without taking the pump off and tearing it apart   this one so far has just blown the rubber seal out .i`m going to try about a hundred lbs. air pressure into the feed back hole and see if that works before i pull the pump

You can do it on the engine fairly easy. Remove the large "NUT" on the pump and pull out the relief spring , spray in the port where the spring is and the oil filter side with solvent  a few times and let soak, reassemble and fire it up.

Doesn't the valve come out the side of the pump?  It's been ages since I've looked at one closely.

there is a plug pointing to the back of the motor that i think is the pressure relief valve`  can get to it from under the car but i believe there are  two valves in that mess              we`ll figure it out     one or the other methods will work

And here I thought I had several B/RB engines, I had eleven B/RB engines. I sold the last one a 383 two years ago.

I just got my 78 Dodge pickup with 440 state inspected last Friday first time in six years and went to drive it to work on Tuesday and motor came apart. Haven't had time to look at it but pieces are sticking through the oil pan.

Uugh.  A vented oil pan makes for a real bad day.

It doesn't cost anything to pay attention.
