It's only R-400......In New England there was thousand's of them....still many in service ......that 1 is 1984.

I did notice it had a Scandia. I’ve heard they used a few of those in bigger rigs. At first I thought they were only for mid liners. You will learn something new every day.

Red e mix here in omaha had a bunch of DM 487’s back in the early 70’s, scania’s with auto trans and a three way auxiliary, really, really gutless, i bought one real cheap, when i was finally done, had a 285 horse, mack 12 spd. And 4:17 camel backs and a mid 80’s U model cab with a/c , it was a resl runner.  terry:MackLogo:

Also came with Chrysler  gas engine's with automatic's ...

I wonder were these built for the plough truck market

Now with my vast experience (a few days in the snow) one thing I noticed was diesels can be a pain in the bum to start when really cold, and I haven't seen really cold yet

Were as petrol (gas) are good starters and talking to a couple of people that do a lot of ploughing the automatic transmission appears to be pretty handy

One fella was slightly less than impressed with the new Dodge Ram as there is no column change for the transmission but a dial on the dash

So dumb ass me is thinking that easy starting in really cold temps and a auto are kinda more important than running at 70 MPH for a plough truck

To quote Swishman "What sez you ?"

Brocky, you should see the tow plows in New York now. One truck one pass both lanes plowed and spread on the  Interstate  and Thruway.

Mark, I have seen videos of them.. They may be all right for their purpose, but will not be much help when the wind starts drifting the snow..

They're a sight to see at first. When they expand out it takes a little getting used to seeing them. Most of the Thruway and Interstates in New York have gates on the on ramps (sorta like railroad crossing gates) to stop traffic from entering in extreme conditions while they're at it cleaning up.

Paul, With the exception of the 4 lane interstate highways the top sped for plowing is in the 35-40MPH range. Most of the rural roads your are working mostly about up to 30 MPH. Here is a picture of a real plow truck I had handy. Sorry not one of the Mack's but the biggest were set up the same way.

prepping for the east coast blizzard of the '70's(78?) I mounted a V plow like that to a road grader owned by Schiavi Const.. put as many roof lights as possible. chains on all wheels. grader went one direction; loader one; and the TD-20 dozer down the road. neither came back for 3-4 days. no cell phones then. service truck with fuel followed the open roads to locate machines.
